🌟 ZARA NEEDS A HOME🌟

Zara is a 7 year old Shiba Inu, who is looking for a new home to call her own due to the current owners housing/personal life changes.

Zara would suit a home with no other dogs as she is still suffering from the trauma of being attacked as a pup. She could potentially go to a home with dogs if the new owner is either a trainer/behaviourist and/or has the appropriate knowledge and skills to train out her unwanted behaviours, with the means to separate as needed and/or if the dogs are well mannered and don’t rough play.

She is happy with being left alone for a few hours a day and can walk by other dogs when out and about without any issues.

Zara does not have the greatest of recalls so is currently walked on a lead or taken to enclosed fields for an on off lead run.

She is fine with people and has been good with the current owners visiting young niece and nephew

Zara is up to date with her vaccines and will be ready to go to her new home in 2-3 months time.

THIS.

The industry has become volatile.

A lack of understanding and experience and plenty of anthropormphic ideologies based on emotion is leading to a lot of dogs being confined to unnatural environments, being out to sleep and owners being out of pocket and still living a life of stress.

I could not agree more with what is said below.

It would be fair to say that the dog world can be a smidge exhausting at times, and I am sure it continues to get worse.

The other week, an acquaintance decided to waste her time, at 7:30am, ensuring that I knew how disappointed and disgusted in me she was due to my training tool choices.

According to her, I am delusional, cruel and abusive.

I have dedicated my entire life to the happiness and wellbeing of dogs ever since I was a child. I started training my dogs when I was just 9 years old, set up my training business at 18 and am still here now at 25.

My training methodologies have changed over the years. I’ve dabbled in most things, worked out what works and what doesn’t. I’ve worked with hundreds of dogs of all breeds and sizes and have encountered and overcome various issues with my own pack.

The above message was in response to a story I had posted of my dog wearing prongs in a garden centre. According to her, this was clear proof that I am abusive.

And she’s not the only one who likes to take time out of her day to try and make me feel like a piece of sh*t.

I am at the very ‘bottom end’ of balanced training in terms of my aversive tool usage. I do not rely on tools and heavy corrections; far from it. I lean much further the other way, but I also assess the dogs in front of me.

I am sick and tired of the industry. And I know countless others who feel the same.

The venom.

The anger.

The hatred.

I pride myself on giving my dogs the best lives. They holiday with me, they hike with me, I train in sports and I give them the best.

And yet people ignore all of that purely because they see a tool they don’t like or understand.

People think my dogs are living their best lives until the realise I am not force free.

I am told they deserve better. I am told that they should be rehomed to someone who would treat them better. I am told that I have no training skills.

It’s so bloody boring.

I am not really sure why I am sharing this story, after the event. But it’s a prime example of just one of the ridiculous conversations we have to endure because people refuse to understand the reasons why.

Stop being lead by emotions.

❓DID YOU KNOW❓

A low-carbohydrate diet for dogs can positively affect their behaviour.

This is because 𝕔𝕒𝕣𝕓𝕠𝕙𝕪𝕕𝕣𝕒𝕥𝕖𝕤 𝕔𝕒𝕟 𝕔𝕒𝕦𝕤𝕖 𝕤𝕡𝕚𝕜𝕖𝕤 𝕚𝕟 𝕓𝕝𝕠𝕠𝕕 𝕤𝕦𝕘𝕒𝕣 𝕝𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕝𝕤, which can lead to hyperactivity and other behavioural issues. By reducing the amount of carbohydrates in a dog's diet, it may help to stabilise their blood sugar levels and promote more consistent, even-tempered behaviour.

I have a few clients who asked about sashes for the humans as sometimes the leads go unnoticed….Yellow Dog UK have listened to your requests!

Last year we were approached by one of our valued sponsors who specialises in dog behaviour and puppy training about creating a yellow sash for dog owners. She explained to us that some of her clients were reluctant to wear our tabard for various reasons, feeling self conscious, overheating etc. A couple of try outs and it was found that the sash was more noticeable and people readily put their dogs on lead when it was spotted.

You ask and of course we listen, so after and bit of to-ing and fro-ing with our manufacturer and our sponsor, we now have in stock our new Yellow Dog UK “MY DOG NEEDS SPACE” sash. This new addition to our product range offers dog owners an alternative option to our highly recommended tabard while communicating their dog’s need for space. Available on the webshop, Amazon and eBay. And I promise next on the list is the double-ended lead!

🌟 FACEBOOK LIVE? 🌟

I am looking at potentially doing a Facebook live to properly introduce myself, my background, my qualifications and why canine behaviour, training and nutrition became a passion that turned quickly into a career.

During this, I will happily take questions and answer them honestly and professionally during the live broadcast. However, as I am ultimately here to help you as dog owners, I would love to take any topics that you would like to know more about - or any questions you may have - and I can talk about these during the live.

Please comment below with a topic, problem, question etc and I will aim to cover as much as I can! This can be on anything dog-related!

This! It is never okay to allow your dog to run up to any other dog, lead or no lead, without being able to recall it back.

These scenarios are, a lot of the time, what creates reactive dogs!

I thought I would take the time today to give another reason why it's utterly unacceptable to yell 'it's okay, he's friendly' and allow your dog to run up to dogs without permission.

My older border collie, Maisie, had surgery on her face the other day. She's got a big wound, and while it's healing well, I still need to be careful with her.

She is on lead exercise. She doesn't love dogs running over to her, and while she's a little sharp, she can generally deal with dogs in her space if ever the situation arises.

However...

Right now, she's got a big, stitched wound on her face. Yesterday, a lady with a big black lab allowed her dog to drag her over to us. I skirted around to avoid it, but can you see how this big, boisterous labrador bouncing on her head would've been bad in that scenario? Aside from the fact that it's rude, it would potentially cause her injury and/or discomfort.

In this scenario specifically, I am looking out for the physical well-being of my dog, not just the mental well-being. She is fully entitled to go for walks despite her injury, and yet I have to choose where I walk because I can't risk someone's 'over-friendly' dog harming her.

(For the record, this labrador was on the road.)

Additionally, a dog in pain or discomfort or who feels vulnerable, or perhaps isn't having their needs fully met as they're on lead restrictions, who then experiences a rude encounter, can be far more negatively affected by this mentally than they might be ordinarily.

It's never okay to allow it, regardless. But this is where the 'don't take your reactive dog out to public places' argument falls down again. It isn't always because a dog is reactive that it requires space. Are we going to also say that injured dogs shouldn't be allowed in public spaces too, because people can't control their dogs?

You have NO idea why an owner wants their dog to have space. It is not up to you to decide for them and allow your dog to invade their space.

Couldn't have said it better myself :)

A huge win for the welfare of all animals across England - the e-collar ban, planned to come into force on the 1st of February will not be coming into effect at this time.

Many will look at this as a huge loss for the dog world, but it’s important to realise that these collars are a lifeline for thousands of dogs across the world.

There are dogs in this world who will never enjoy off-lead freedom safely.

There are dogs in this world who end up injured or dead because one day they decide to take off.

There are animals in this world whose welfare is compromised by out-of-control, off-lead dogs.

Large organisations across the world spread huge amounts of misinformation on the subject, based on flawed science and ideologies that appease the masses.

Lumping those who use e-collars responsibly in with those who do abuse animals is frankly appalling.

Despite owning a secure field, I do not believe a dog should be destined to only enjoy time off-lead within the confines of a secure field. But even if I did, I am all too aware that management fails and accidents happen. Dogs break free, escape and accidents happen. But these accidents can be fatal.

Not using e-collars doesn’t make you a better trainer. It simply means you haven’t met a dog that’s required one. That, or you have decided that the dog is better off on a lead for life.

Bans drive these tools underground and make accessing good quality training impossible, thus creating further issues. Banning them is not the solution.

And I get it. I was adamantly opposed to them too; until I realised that mine and thousands of other dogs could live better lives thanks to an e-collar. They change lives and they help keep dogs and other animals safe.

Not every dog requires one. They’re not suited to every dog. But plenty of dogs would have a life with a lot less freedom without it.
