It's that time of year again when we start to think about buying our pets some Christmas presents and treats.

Rawhide is a by-product of the leather industry, and the treatment process includes the use of chemicals and glues. They aren't designed for eating but rather for chewing and so if swallowed, can cause a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract.

A basic run down on “raw”hide;

☠️ The hides are soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat off the skin.

☠️ More chemicals are then used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the smell.

☠️ Now comes the pretty festive colours and the GLUE (yes, glue) to form cute shapes.

In addition to the toxic manufacturing process, they also regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews become slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

PLEASE, PLEASE be safe with your dogs!

Alternative treats that are 100% natural, such as tripe sticks, fish skin twist, lamb and cow ears, chicken feet, pizzles etc. are all easily available and a much better choice for your dogs.

Be sure to tell all your doggy owning family and friends and let's put a stop to this horrible product!

Anastasiia Yalanskaya was one of the brave animal warriors who remained behind while all others evacuated Ukraine. Last week, Anastasiia and two volunteers (unnamed) were gunned down en-route from an animal shelter that they had just delivered dog food to. The animal shelter had been without food for almost three days. Anastasiia was only 26 years old.

On behalf of everyone at the Council, may Anastasiia and her colleagues rest in eternal peace.

Barton Parish Council looks after the Fish Pond, Collinson Park, Ash Tree Pocket Park and St James Garden on behalf of the village residents. We are really keen to understand how these areas are used by all generations and if you would like to see any changes.

The green spaces in the village have probably been used by more residents in the village than ever before during the various periods of Lockdown and the need to 'Stay Local' for exercise and general wellbeing.
