Ivel Valley Wild Bird Food Bringing you premium quality bird food made right here on our solar-powered farm 🚜 The Ready Peck mixes and suet treats are also about minimising waste.

Nick and James Parrish are passionate about bringing beautiful birds to your garden and have spent 5 years developing a unique range of products to help you attract more garden birds to your garden. At Ivel Valley we have set out to make products that really work and as well to have proper nutritious ingredients. This is where we came up with the principle of our Ready Peck products which are abou

t having 5 key ingredients – nuts, suet, oats, seed and fruit or insects. This ensures a mixture of the essential nutritious ingredients for a bird’s well being and survival. As well these ingredients are those most readily enjoyed by the many species of birds that may visit your garden. With the right combination and proportions of seed you will notice that very few seeds are likely to be wasted and our Ready Peck range has no more than 10% of very small seeds, which some birds are less inclined to take. Making our own suet products is unique to us and we feel that the Ready Peck range is the ultimate in attracting and feeding wild birds. Birds typically want to be in and out of a feeding station as quickly as possible, wary of being exposed to predators. This is why we see it as critical to put out food mixes that they will eat, that are nutritious and that they do not have to sift through and potentially waste. A bird has a limited time on the feeder and it makes sense that they maximise the opportunity with high quality nutritious food. This is particularly relevant in cold weather where their survival is under such pressure.

From Rivals to Romantics: The Robin’s Springtime Serenade 💕

Ever noticed you rarely see two robins together? These territorial birds usually chase off rivals, but as nesting season begins, they set differences aside to find a mate.

Right now, male robins are busy trying to impress females by showing off their bright red breast, singing beautifully, and even offering food as a little gift.

This weekend, take a moment to listen. You might hear their melodic songs as they try to win each other over. A sure sign that spring is on its way! 🐦🎶

Happy National Nest Box Week! 🪺
Starting today, February 14th, this annual event encourages everyone to put up a nest box in their garden to help wild birds. With natural nesting sights disappearing, every nest box we put up creates a safe, welcoming space for birds to raise their young.

A simple act, but one that helps nature thrive!

Ending the Week on a Frosty Note at Ivel Valley HQ ❄️
This morning, we ventured into the fields and found a sense of calm walking across the crisp, frosty grass. Even the reservoirs have frozen over, adding to the wintery landscape.

As the weekend approaches, we hope you stay safe and warm. Don’t forget to take care of your garden visitors during this chilly spell:

● Keep bird feeders full of high-energy food like suet, peanuts, and sunflower hearts to help them stay fueled.
● Break the ice on your bird bath so birds and wildlife can still access fresh water.

Share your snowy scenes and garden wildlife with us this weekend in our British Bird Feeding & Wildlife Community group—we’d love to see them!

The Wonderful Waxwing! ❄️
Let's dive into the magical world of the waxwing, one of winter's most dazzling visitors to the UK. These birds are as captivating as they are rare to spot!
1️⃣ Winter Wanderers: Waxwings arrive from Scandinavia in search of food, turning up in the UK between October and April, when berry supplies back home run low. Their appearance is unpredictable, but when they arrive, it's always a spectacle!
2️⃣ Berry Lovers: Waxwings are berry connoisseurs, feasting on rowan, hawthorn, and cotoneaster. Planting berry-rich shrubs in your garden might just tempt them to stop by.
3️⃣ Feathered Artistry: With their silky plumage, striking crests, and bright red wing tips (resembling drops of sealing wax), waxwings are truly one of nature's masterpieces.
4️⃣ Sociable Sightings: Waxwings travel in flocks and are known to descend on berry-laden trees, creating a mesmerising flurry of activity.
5️⃣ Listen for Their Call: They have two common calls: a high-pitched, trilled bzeee and a sighing whistle, about a half-second long, often rising in pitch at the beginning. Their soft, trilling call is distinct and can often give away their presence even before you spot their stunning plumage.

Keep an eye on berry-laden trees and hedgerows this winter. You might just be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these elegant visitors. A waxwing sighting is a true gift of the season!

The Charming Chaffinch! ✨

Let's talk about one of Britain's favourite garden visitors, the chaffinch – a bird with personality, talent, and even a touch of wanderlust!

1️⃣ During the winter, our local chaffinch squad gets a boost from Scandinavian migrants, making the UK the go-to winter getaway for these stylish songbirds.

2️⃣ Chaffinches don't just sing – they have regional accents! A Cornish chaffinch might sound a little different from its Yorkshire cousin. Think of it as the bird equivalent of calling something a "bap" or a "cob."

3️⃣ Back in the day, Victorians were obsessed with c**k chaffinches' songs. They held singing matches to see which bird could drop the most phrases in 15 minutes. Talk about birding with a competitive edge!

4️⃣ Want to make your garden chaffinch-friendly? Plant trees – and if you can, make it an oak! These birds are tree aficionados, thriving wherever leafy giants stand tall.

5️⃣ Female chaffinches tend to migrate farther than males in winter. The girls seem to enjoy spreading their wings and adventuring further afield.

So, keep an eye out for these melodious little globetrotters in your garden or on your winter walks.

About Ivel Valley

Ivel Valley Wild Bird Food is part of a family farm business based in the Ivel Valley, Bedfordshire. The founders, Nick and James Parrish are passionate about bringing beautiful birds to your garden and have spent 5 years developing a unique range of products to help you attract more garden birds to your garden.

At Ivel Valley we have set out to make products that really work, with proper nutritious ingredients that are beneficial to birds’ development. This is where we came up with the principle of our Ready Peck products which are about having 5 key ingredients – nuts, suet, oats, seed and fruit or insects. This ensures a mixture of the essential nutritious ingredients for a bird’s well being and survival. As well, these ingredients are those most readily enjoyed by the many species of birds that may visit your garden. The Ready Peck mixes and suet treats are also about minimising waste. With the right combination and proportions of seed you will notice that very few seeds are likely to be wasted and our Ready Peck range has no more than 10% of very small seeds, which some birds are less inclined to take.

We’re also proud to have developed our BritBits range of ‘superfood’ suet pellets. A product that we spent a year creating with the input of an Ornithologist. BritBits is a versatile, all year round suet pellet designed to maintain its form through all kinds of weather. It won't freeze or melt and it contains no ingredients that will spring up unwanted plants in your garden - making it 100% edible with no wastage. Making our own suet products is unique to us and we feel that the Ready Peck range and BritBits are the ultimate in attracting and feeding wild birds.
