Let's talk about puppies!

Why do puppies:-

Who am I?
My name is Julie and I am here to support you with your dog training, whether it is puppy struggles, adolescent or life skills I am here for you.

I have been training for seven years and completed over hundred courses, attended seminars and workshops to become a certified trainer in the following areas with the Dog Training College:-

Barking is communication, dog's bark!

Noise is all around us, birds, aeroplanes, cars, children playing, screaming, shouting, crying, loud music, singing, dustbin lorries, motorbikes 🏍 and so much more!

But if a dog barks and dares to communicate with us, we must immediately put a stop to it.

Why?

Because it is considered a nuisance to society 🤔

Do we stop children communicating? No, we don't!
Do we stop traffic? No, we don't!
Do we stop children playing, getting excited, having fun? No, we don't!
Do we stop our dogs telling us what they want 🤔 Yes we do!

Barking is communication, dog's bark!

Constant, excessive barking however needs addressing - your dog is expressing their needs, are we listening to them?

Once you start listening, you will start to learn what they want and then you can effectively support them 🐾🐾

From puppy nipping, biting, scratching, chewing, sleeping issues and puddles on the floor to zoomies and the witching hour and more. Reactivity, jumping up, pulling on the lead, running off or pinching shoes or dangerous items, I know how it feels 🤷‍♀️

⭐Yes, there will be difficult days.

⭐Yes, you may want to crawl into a hole and not come back out.

⭐Yes, your anxiety may be through the roof.

🙌 If you really want to train the perfect recall, here's my one hot tip. 🙌

Become sexier than the squirrel!!!

Play games that make your dog want to return to you, get creative and exciting and your dog will return to you. We have many tools that can get that perfect recall but only you can do it when it matters most!

When my client Charlotte and her dog Crisp came to me, they'd been struggling with recall for months. Crisp would only come back to her around 20% of the time. Once she managed to get Crisp back to her she would put him straight back onto his lead, this meant that he was going home. No wonder Crisp didn’t want to come back!

After changing things up and playing lots of fun games with Crisp we managed to bring some fun back into coming back and we didn’t put the lead on every time he came back either as this was a sign that he was going home. With this change their recall success rate is now 80%. And I have no doubt with continued practice it'll be 100% in no time. 💖

Moral of the story, you need to be way more exciting than the environment or your dog just won’t even know you are with them!

🦸‍♀️ I like to think we all have a super power. 🦸‍♀️

People often tell me mine is calmness because I'm great at bringing the energy down, with dogs especially. I hear “my dog is not normally this calm when a new person comes in” a lot!

Dogs find themselves in situations they are not happy with all of the time, we don’t always know this as we think they should just fit into our lives. Most dogs are happiest when they are curled up with you, no distractions, visitors or attention from the outside world.

When I enter your home I don’t make a fuss, I talk with you until your dog is ready to interact with me and then we work together.

Dog training is complex and it’s not just showing you how playing games can train your dog. I am observing your dog all the time I am with you, I want to know how they are feeling, I try to get into their heads and work out what they want and how they are trying to tell you what they want.

When we are sat talking I am working - observing, listening, questioning, digging deeper into your struggles to find a solution. Answers are often in the small details that you give me.

My calmness gets me the answers I need to help you with your struggles and I am grateful for this gift ❤️

Helping people and their pets is my life's work. And I'm truly honoured I get to call this my job.

💕 I’ve had a few people hopping into my inbox this week asking about our five week Puppy Foundation Programme. 💕

A few common questions cropped up, so I thought I’d answer them here in case you’ve been wondering the same.

🐾 When can we start training with our puppy?

As soon as you bring them home. As a one to one trainer, I come to you to show you how you can help your puppy settle in, give you advice on toileting, crate training and prepare you for when you are able to take your puppy on their first walks.

🐾 Do I need to train my puppy between sessions?

Yes but keep training sessions very short, no longer than three minutes, three times a day to start with. Puppies get tired very quickly and need a lot of rest so don’t overdo the training.

🐾 What do I need for our training sessions?

Your puppy’s bed, a portion of their daily food allowance and access to water and I always recommend a pair of gardening gloves 😂

A few puppy questions I get asked frequently that I wanted to share with you are:-

🐾 When will my puppy stop biting me?

If you have a puppy that nips and bites you, it is usually because they are teething and this should stop around 8 months old. Some puppies nip and bite because they are over-excited, over-stimulated or frustrated. Chewing can become an issue when your puppy reaches adolescence but this is for another time!

🐾 How often should I take my puppy out to the toilet?

After a sleep, nap or rest. When they have had a playtime, training session, food or drink. First thing in the morning and before bedtime. If you notice them sniffing and circling then I would take them outside.

🐾 Should we introduce crate training to our puppy?

Personally I would but this is a choice for you to make and there is no right or wrong answer. If your puppy has to spend some time at the vets or at the groomers they may need to be crated so even if you don't use a crate at home it may be a good idea to get them used to one. Crates are also a safe way for your puppy to travel in the car and can be used when you go on holiday.

The most challenging time we had as dog parents was definitely when Luka was a puppy.

As many of you know, Luka was an absolute nightmare when he was a puppy. Especially with the nipping and biting, not sleeping, separation issues, ok you get it!

Even though he was exhausting at that stage, we did manage to find a way through and now at seven years old thankfully he is much easier to live with!

So although we had a tough time when Luka was a puppy, there will always be better times around the corner.

Hold onto that the next time you have a challenging time with your own puppy. Never give up on helping them, because they’ll never give up on you. 💖

😬 Does your puppy go crazy at a certain time of the day? 😮

Often called the zoomies or witching hour 😬 it's actually not uncommon.

In fact, 8 out of 10 puppies have the zoomies and it’s usually in the evening when you want to settle down!

But there are simple steps you can take right now that will help your puppy

And here they are:
🐾 Introduce calm activities such as scatter feeding around the time that they would normally go crazy.
🐾 Walk them round the garden (or living room) and reward them for being calm.
🐾Give them a lickimat, snuffle mat, Kong or a chew to occupy them instead.
🐾Have a short training session to tire their brain.
🐾Put them in their quiet, safe place for a sleep before any zoomies happen.
🐾Engage them in a calm play session.
🐾Take them for a short walk.

If that's you, I'm here today to share my 5 top tips to help you reduce your dog’s barking.

1. Use distraction techniques, games are great for distractions.

2. Calmness is key! Introduce more down time for your dog, sleep or rest.

3. Give your dog a job to do “Find it!” “paws on” or scatter feed.

4. Manage your dog’s environment to avoid the triggers such as stair gates to stop your dog charging at the front door, taking them for walks in a quiet area away from other dogs or distractions until you have trained for the situation.

5.Train for the situation not in the situation. Prepare your dog so that they know how to behave when faced with their trigger.

These tips are always my go-to whenever my customers want to solve barking issues.

In fact, when Leanne a recent customer implemented these 5 simple tips, she saw an improvement in just two weeks.

I have been asked a few times if I run training classes, the answer is no I don't and there are several reasons why

🐾 I have menieres disease and this affects my ability to hear clearly in noisy environments. (The reason why I stopped working in a school)

🐾 I enjoy working on a one to one basis where I can give you my full attention.

🐾 Each dog or puppy is unique and responds differently so I favour a tailored approach for your specific needs.

🐾 I travel to you so you can train your dog or puppy in the comfort of your own home with a plan just for you.

🐾 Classes are not usually for socialising as most people assume but for training and can cause anxiety to both dog and their human if it is too noisy, busy or chaotic.

Please note I am not against training classes, I just choose to work on a one to one basis.
