This evening we had to say goodbye to our lovely practice cat Galli, he brought so much joy and laughter to everyone that knew him and his presence is going to be greatly missed. Working in the veterinary industry is often filled with challenges, heartbreaks, and long days, but through it all Galli was our shining light.

Thank you Galli for being our constant companion, our furry little therapist, and our source of light on the toughest days. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Rest easy, our green eyed ginger boy. You will be deeply missed.💚🪽

💜Pet anxiety Awareness Month💜

This is handsome Hector who’s a 1 year old cockapoo, he visited us last week for a socialisation visit. We offer these visits to anxious patients to help them associate the vets with something positive. Hector became very weary of coming to us after his vaccinations and we wanted to help him overcome this, as he’s so young it’s important to improve this relationship now to help his anxiety levels in the future. In this session we got him used to the sounds and environment of a veterinary practice by opening cupboards, typing at the computer and walking around the consult room. Of course lots of gravy bones were given for positive reinforcement! By the end of the session, Hector was happily walking to the nurse to accept gravy bones and even giving his paw. This visit was extremely important for Hector to realise something scary doesn’t happen every time he comes to the vets and we aren’t scary monsters!
We are so pleased with how this session went and we can’t wait to keep building on this with Hector 🐾💚

🦷Pet Dental Health awareness! 🦷

Our last post covered dental disease and what to look out for, but how can you look after your pet’s teeth?

🪥 Daily tooth brushing - This is the most effective way to remove plaque from your pet’s teeth. Having your teeth brushed is a strange experience, and many pets will panic if it is not introduced slowly and gently. It may take a month or two to reach a point of ‘proper brushing’ - this is normal and nothing to worry about.

🩺 Regular dental check ups - Bringing your pet in regularly to see a vet or nurse is the best way to identify the first signs of dental disease.

🦷 Feeding dry biscuits or a specialised dental diet - Dry food can help remove plaque from your pet’s teeth when chewing. You can also feed your pet a diet designed specifically for dental health.

🦷 Chews and toys - If your pet won’t tolerate brushing, abrasive toys and dental chews can be used to help reduce plaque and tartar build up, slowing the development of dental disease.

🦷 Book your pet in for a dental procedure - This will allow your vet to clean and thoroughly assess your pet’s teeth, and remove any that are diseased or damaged.

🦷 Products - There are various oral rinses and gels available to help reduce bacteria and plaque. Look for those that have the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal or are listed on their website.

If you would like to book your pet in to see a vet about their dental health, please call us on 01438 745833 🐈‍⬛🐶💚

🐈🥒Pickles in a pickle 🥒🐈

Pickles presented to us for lethargy and anorexia for 3 days, initially we gave him an anti-nausea medication to see if this would make him feel any better. Unfortunately, the anti-nausea medication didn’t work and he still didn’t have an appetite. Pickles in an outdoor cat and a known scavenger so the vet suspected a foreign body, we then admitted Pickles for x-rays and supportive care. As you can see in the X-rays below we noticed a foreign object in his colon, luckily because it had made its way through most of his gastrointestinal tract we managed to manoeuvre the foreign object out without surgery. The foreign object turned out to be the end of a nerf gun bullet which he must have picked up on one of his adventures. Soon after the bullet was removed Pickles started eating again and feeling so much better! We kept him in overnight for fluids, supportive care and lots of cuddles. We wish pickles a speedy recovery 💚

🦷 Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

February is pet dental health awareness month! 🐈‍⬛💚

Did you know that adult dogs have 42 teeth and adult cats have 30 teeth!

Oral health is a crucial, but often overlooked aspect of your pet’s overall wellbeing. Just like humans, pets can experience a range of dental problems which, if left untreated, can lead to pain, discomfort and potentially more serious health complications.

More than 70% of dogs over 3 years old have dental disease and it is thought that 50-90% of cats over 4 years old experience some form of dental illness.

Untreated dental problems have been linked to serious medical problems, including heart, liver and kidney disease.

Signs of dental disease:
🦷 Bad breath
🦷 Red gums
🦷 Yellow or brownish teeth
🦷 Pus oozing from gums
🦷 Ulcers on lips
🦷 Facial swelling
🦷 Reduced appetite - eating less than normal or more slowly than normal
🦷 Weight loss
🦷 Pawing at face
🦷 Dropping food out of their mouth
🦷Struggling to eat dry food or preferring wet food

Periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed disease in cats in the UK, and is likely to affect all dogs during their lifetime. It is caused by bacteria in the mouth. Initially, inflammation of the gums occurs (Gingivitis). This is reversible but, if not treated, will progress to an irreversible stage or inflammation (periodontitis). This affects the tissues supporting the teeth in the jaws and will eventually result in the loss of teeth. The pictures below show the development of this disease in dogs and cats.

Keep an eye out for our next post where we will cover the ways you can look after your pet’s teeth and prevent severe dental disease developing! ✅🪥

What happens when you bring a stray into us?
(DISCLAIMER: only bring cats into a vets if you are certain it’s a stray and you are concerned about its health)

🐾 firstly we check for a microchip
🐾If not microchipped but healthy we place a paper collar with finders details on and put back where found (in hope the owners will contact the finders to make them aware the cat is owned)
🐾 if microchipped we look up the details and reunite with owners
🐾 if not microchipped but unhealthy we treat where possible, still looking for the owner in the meantime
🐾 we keep the cats which cannot be reunited for seven days before finding them a suitable rescue or forever home

Billy came into us as a stray after a member of public found him in a bin shed, he was freezing cold, wet, severely emaciated and weak. On examination we diagnosed him with severe flea anaemia which is a fatal condition if left as long as Billy’s was. We quickly warmed him up, put him on intravenous fluids, took bloods and treated his flea infestation. Billy was with us for 6weeks while he was recovering and putting weight on, in this time we also did a dental on him as he had periodontal disease. When the time came for him to go to his forever home we made sure we fully vaccinated and microchipped him, we also FIV/FeLV tested him. Here is a photo of Billy when he first arrived to us at Great Ashby Vets and him now thriving in his forever home, as you can see he is now a handsome chunky monkey and we are so pleased he got a second chance at life💚

💚Follow a patient for the day💚
This is Murphy a 6 year old cavalier, he came in today for an echocardiogram and dental. Murphy was previously diagnosed with a heart murmur so had an echocardiogram prior to his dental to ensure his safety during anaesthetic, during this scan the vet diagnosed him with
Stage B2 mitral valve disease. Mitral valve disease is a common condition seen in his breed, it’s when the mitral valve leaks blood into the left atrium causing the heart to become slightly enlarged. Because it was a very low stage of MVD he didn’t need any medication for it and we went ahead with the dental. During the dental Murphy had a scale and polish, dental X-rays and 13 teeth extracted, he recovered extremely well and even hoovered down a bowl of food as soon as he could! He was the best boy during his stay here and we can’t wait to see him for his post operative checks 🐾

Meet Pippin🐶

Pippin was brought to us after being found abandoned and tied to a tree, he was extremely emaciated and had demodectic mange which lead to severe hair loss. After evaluating Pippins condition, a rescue centre determined poor prognosis so was leaning towards euthanasia. We wanted to put in the time and effort with him as we saw his potential, we then had him signed over to us so we could try to treat. After 2 months of antibacterial/anti-fungal treatment and a strict feeding regime, Pippin made a full recovery. Below are the before and after pictures of our beloved Pippin who now lives with one of our vets 💚
