28/03/2025
On 27th March 2025 I received a call from Equine Halfway House regarding an injured pony located in a ravine in Glen River, Newcastle. At this stage I would emphasise my interest and responsibility in this matter is the welfare of the pony only.
I worked alongside Equine Halfway House Charity, the National Trust, the Police Service of Northern Ireland and local people to locate and assess the pony who had a fractured leg. I made an assessment based on the welfare of the pony that euthanasia was the best and only option for the pony given its location and the injury it had sustained. Attempting to move the pony would have caused further unnecessary suffering and stress. The PSNI in consultation with myself euthanised the pony.
The pony’s remains are still in the river, and I understand that all relevant parties with responsibility for the Glen River will ensure the swift removal of the remains as soon as possible. Whilst I am well aware the sight of a dead pony in the Glen River will be distressing to visitors to that location the removal of the remains is outside both mine and the PSNI’s remit. And I trust that all statutory bodies with responsibility for the Glen River will now work together to have the remains removed without delay. I spent hours yesterday trying to locate the statutory body responsible for the Glen River. This situation is totally unacceptable and moving forward there needs to be a proper protocol in place to ensure that there is not repeat of this situation arising again. I found that Equine Halfway House Charity, the National Trust and the PSNI were most helpful but there were statutory bodies which were quick to defer their responsibilities to other parties. All parties with an interest/responsibility for the Glen Rive must now act together to get this matter resolved to ensure there is no repeat of this situation.
I once again wish to thank Equine Halfway House Charity, the National Trust and in particular the PSNI armed response team for their help and support in this distressing matter.
