So, after 35yrs Beachin is now closed!
It’s been a long period of stress, upset and anxiety. I really was ready to throw the towel in, then Paula told me ‘you’ll rise like a Phoenix from the flames’………and my Mojo was reinstated!
My heartfelt thanks go to my friend Faye for helping me on the final clearout, RoseBerry for her editorial skills, Nic for my beautiful new logo and social media knowledge, Chris for all the techie stuff that blows my mind, and to Bill for throwing ‘we can do that!’ at every doubt I have! As if I’ve found more people to run with another of my crazy ideas! Blessed indeed!

We are building the FIRST and ONLY indoor year-round dock-diving centre in the UK! How mad is that?! 💦🐕🐾💕

In preparation please take yourselves over to our new page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554168710046

I’ve not publicised this on my personal page yet, but Beachin Dog Therapy Pool, the business I’ve thrown my all into for the past 10years is due to close at the end of Nov. It’s completely out of my control, and my nearest and dearest know the anxiety the past couple of years have caused. I was ready to throw in the towel, but then the realisation of over 600 dogs losing their safe-space (and in many cases their mobility) hit hard, and now I know I need to fight on for them.
I’ve shared my plans on the GoFundMe page, please have a read and donate if you feel the inclination. Any donations, advice, shares, recommendations, support…….whatever you can offer…..all gratefully received. This is massive, and scary, and my next (and possibly biggest ever) challenge! I fully intend to make this happen, and I know you can help x

As you know from my previous posts Beachin Pool is having to close at the end of this month.

I am delighted to say I have found new venue where we can continue to offer rehab, fun and fitness in an even bigger pool than our present one and also add dock-diving to our range of activities!

As you can imagine, the set-up costs for this new start are huge so I have set up a GoFundMe page through which you can help support our aim of providing an affordable service for dog lovers and their dogs of all shapes and sizes.

Please click on the link below to get more information on how you can help us to continue to make happy memories for you and your dog and also some great offers for donors.

If you know anybody who may be interested in our venture please forward this link to them.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you and your furry friends in our new venue.

It is with great sadness, after 35yrs trading and due to circumstances out of my control, I have to announce the permanent closure of Beachin on 29th Nov 2023.
I realise many of your dogs rely on regular swimming to maintain their mobility, so I fully intend to provide a list of alternative hydro centres.
However, we are still desperately seeking another venue, so if you know of anyone who perhaps has an indoor pool they don’t use, or a suitable building for an above-ground pool, please do let one of us know.
We are all truly devastated, and massively frustrated. We can only hope something comes up at the 11th hour.
Such a massive loss for so many dogs 💔

TV TRAINERS
Why are TV executives still so wedded to aversive dog trainers? My theory... the public loves the circus act of dangerous and wild behaviour tamed as if by magic.
Dog Academy tried very hard to make positive, reward based training good TV, and they showcased some of the very best trainers and behaviourists working in the UK. But to the masses, sitting on the floor tossing chunks of chicken at a dog doesn't seem to hold the same appeal as dodging the growls and bites of a confused and terrified dog. A scared dog slowly realising a new person is no threat, and watching their body and face soften is not as dramatic as the 'fierce beast calmed' lying in a state of miserable learned helplessness.
How can we get the Ring Masters and Lion Tamers off TV? Stop watching.
Instead of watching a dog with mobility issues and pain labelled as a 'diva', find Canine Arthritis Management and read an article on home adaptations for elderly dogs. Instead of watching a dog with a fear of his feet being handled walked to exhaustion, then wrestled to the floor, let Chirag Patel show you the bucket game on YouTube.

Can we please stop expecting that EVERY dog wants to go to dog parks, daycares, patio parties and have birthday parties with other dogs! Nobody loves dogs more than me, but I’m here to tell you that dogs aren’t human children. They don’t want to do everything a human child does. Breed can matter when deciding what is fun for your best friend. Your Husky may have the energy to run, your Retriever may want to retrieve and your terrier may want to chase and grab. So yes, raising them with kindness is paramount, but paying attention to their needs is too. I said it.

This mentality that every dog has to be “social” with other people and dogs is keeping my shelter full, my days long and my heart broken, because I see the best dogs passed over, because they wouldn’t do well at a dog park or daycare. Not every dog needs to like your friends. I keep my dog in his room when people come over, because he isn’t comfortable around everyone, and I don’t want to set him up for failure. Love your dog enough to respect her boundaries.

Your dog doesn’t want to meet every dog. The reality show you watched about dog training and dog adoption is fake, I’ve worked in television, it’s edited to create a good story, not necessarily a real story. Let’s stop these narratives on dog ownership that are SOLD to us and based on making money. Dogs aren’t a business they are our best friends. Remember that.

Your dog can be perfectly safe and happy without overstimulating daycare or doggy birthday parties. Those things are fun for some dogs, but not for all. I want to take my dog everywhere, I want to give my dog the things I would want, but for the love of dogs in shelters everywhere, let’s ask dogs what do they REALLY want?

Dogs want more sniffs, waterlogged sticks, a quiet place to decompress, a space to stretch their legs and you to respect their body language and boundaries. They are talking to you…listen.

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are lucky enough to be raised right, like this beautiful bully pup here, while others are at the mercy of poor breeders and people that raise and shape them to be unsocial and volatile. This ultimately leads to people getting hurt and killed - which is devastating, and as these incidences make the headlines, the politicians including the PM himself, come out all guns blazing, because they have to do something.
We’ve had the DDA for over 25 years and it has caused nothing but pain and misery for dogs that do not pose a risk and their responsible guardians, while doing nothing for public safety. Having learnt those lessons what does the government decide to do - ban XL bully breed types. Here we go again!
Responsible guardians and dogs that are social and do not pose a risk to the public will be targeted while the people that are breeding and raising these dogs to be a certain way will go underground, just like last time.
Wouldn’t it be great if the PM and the government actually listened to the experts in this field - everyone from the RSPCA to trainers like me who work with these dogs and know what they’re talking about, to find a way forward? While a serious problem needs to be addressed, a ban is not the way to do it and the innocent will be penalized because of the actions of a few. Again, we blame the wrong end of the leash.
So, I guess now every XL bully will have to wear a muzzle out in public - and there are ways to make this as positive an experience as possible - and follow a set of guidelines, which of course the responsible folks will follow and others won’t.
There is no doubt about it that these dogs are big and powerful. They are intelligent, emotional and can be intense when expressing how they feel. They tend to be quick to learn and fast to act as well as being couch potatoes. You need to know what you are doing with any breed of dog you have, and now for all bully guardians, you have no choice because yet again, whether your dog meets the ‘measurements’ or not, you will be targeted.

When my yellow Lab died last spring, I was flattened by an overwhelming sadness that’s with me still. And that’s normal, experts say, because losing a pet is often one of the hardest yet least acknowledged traumas we’ll ever face.

Surprisingly to some, a lot of dogs (even the best swimmers) can take 4-5 sessions to become comfortable with the pool and take to swimming, Teddy was one of those. Well done to Teddy’s owner for persevering, and Lindz for her patience! Fifth session and the boy cracked it 💕
