At Puppy School, we’re big on calm puppy greetings, as opposed to puppy free play. We’re raising puppies to be polite and respectful in the presence of other dogs. 😇
If you’re coming to the BVNA Congress this weekend, you’ll be able to hear Puppy School Founder and Director, Gwen Bailey, along with Puppy School Regional Manager Louise (Surrey and South London Dog Training and Behaviour), giving a talk on this very subject. Their talk is titled “Puppy greetings – the new puppy play” and we will share with Veterinary Nurses a new way for puppies to meet each other calmly and safely, making it easier for them to develop positive relationships with others within their vet practice. Don’t miss them, they’re speaking on Sunday afternoon at Ironbridge 2.
Head to https://bvna.org.uk/congress/ for the full programme and for more information about the event, and follow along using #BVNACongress2024 🐾

🐾 Zoo Time for Puppy School! 🐾
Last week, the Puppy School Regional Managers had the chance to team-build and develop their training skills at an incredible CPD course at @paigntonzoo 🐾 The course was designed to help the zoo provide enrichment for the animals, including training cooperative, consent-based husbandry techniques. Spot Gwen and Amanda teaching baboons to place their arms in a sleeve and hold still, ultimately to allow for injections.
Thank you so much to Jo Mason and the lovely staff and animals at Paignton Zoo for this fantastic experience. Animals (and people) training has many universal, transferrable elements, and we're excited to think about ways we can apply what we learnt to our own practices to further help puppies and their parents.

Did you catch our tutor Carol Wright on ITV? She appeared on Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Weekend last Sunday. Here's a snippet, where she gives us an excellent demonstration of recall foundations. Notice how the handler quietly holds puppy’s collar before releasing the treat – this ensures that puppy becomes comfortable with us taking hold of their collar, so that we can put them back on their lead when we need to. Repetition and consistency are the key messages, as well as kindness and a whole lot of patience!
Thank you to @itv for showcasing positive reinforcement training.
If you missed it, you can catch up on @itvxofficial . It’s Series 6 Episode 12, and the segment is on from 38 minutes.
Carol runs puppy classes in Winchester and Andover. Find your nearest class at the link in our bio. 🐾

It's World Water Day!
Did you know, it is of vital importance to your puppy's health that they have access to fresh drinking water at all times. Even if you're toilet training, your puppy should always be able to drink when they want to.
Have their water bowl somewhere where you see it often, rather than out of sight, so it can be refilled whenever it's getting low. It's a good to get into the habit of refreshing it whenever you feed your puppy, and give that bowl a good wash at least every other day.
Save this post as a reminder to clean your dog's water bowl!

If you loved watching the Heelwork to Music at Crufts this weekend, here are some easy moves you can have a go at with your dog.
A routine should start with a pose, so here's Freya doing a "sit pretty" as an example.
Then, Puppy School tutor Kaitlin Reynell of @encoredogs is showing us how to teach a distance circle.
Start with multiple cones and lure your dog around them. Then take the cones away gradually. If you don't have cones you can use food tins instead.
Our training is all done using positive reinforcement, so you can see Freya getting a tasy reward after each go.
Save this video and have a go with your dog, we would love to see how you get on!
