Watch out for grass seeds on your dog walks! 🐾🌱 Grass seeds can easily become lodged in your dog's fur, ears, or paws when on walks, causing discomfort and potential health issues. Watch out for these signs of grass seed injury and keep your dog safe on your outdoor adventures 👇

With children and pets spending more time together over the summer holidays, it's super important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language ⚠️

Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite.

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder 🚦

It’s important to note that all dogs are different - not every dog will show every behaviour on the ladder and might not follow the same order.

This is a traffic light system with red signals being the worst. Green signals are: Yawning, blinking, nose licking and turning their head away. Yellow signals are: Sitting and turning their body away, walking away, creeping and having their ears back. Orange signals are: Standing crouched, tail tucked, lying down with their belly exposed in a submissive way, stiffening up and staring. Red signals are: Growling, snapping and biting.]

Summer has arrived, yet the hot weather, grass seeds, heatstroke, blue-green algae, and bee stings can all prevent you and your dog from enjoying it.

Remember, if it’s too hot for your hands or your bare feet, then it’s too hot for their paw pads! ⚠️

If you’re unsure whether it’s okay to let your pet go for a walk on pavements, a simple way to test the temperature is by holding your bare skin on the tarmac for five seconds ⏱️

If you find it painful, then your pet will find it painful to walk on!

To protect your pet, it’s best to avoid walks during the hottest part of the day, which is usually between 8am and 6pm. If you can't safely exercise your dog, missing a day won't hurt.

Is it safe to give your pets ice cubes? 🧊

Every year pet owners are warned that ice is dangerous, and that it might send them into shock! However, there is no evidence to support this claim.

Preventing your pet from overheating is really important, so here are some things you can do to keep them cool:

- Put ice in your dogs water bowl to keep the water cool
- Put crushed ice in their food bowl for them to lick

It's always important to remember NOT to give ice cubes to a pet that is suffering from heatstroke. They need water to drink and cool water poured over their body, you should also call your vet as soon as possible! ⚠️
