This week is so we’re sharing a few simple tips on rabbit ownership🐇✨.
During the warmer months you need to watch out for flystrike. Flystrike happens when flies lay their eggs on your rabbit’s fur, these eggs then hatch out into maggots which will then begin to eat into the rabbit’s flesh. This is obviously very painful and can cause death in under 24 hours if left untreated.
There are a number of things you should be doing to prevent flystrike:
1) Check your rabbit’s bottom at least once a day - and more frequently in warm weather🕶️
2) If there is any urine or faeces stuck in the fur around their bottom, clean and dry the area thoroughly
3) Keep your rabbits’ environment clean so that flies are not attracted. Remove dirty litter and bedding frequently.
Rabbits that are overweight or have mobility issues are higher risk for flystrike so you need to be extra vigilant with the steps listed above.

As the weather heats up this weekend, we expect the smell of the BBQ to take over Oxfordshire! Here’s a few tips to ensure that your pets stay safe whilst you enjoy the outdoors:

🔥 Be careful to keep pets away from the heat and ensure that any potentially poisonous substances (like firelighters, charcoal etc) are kept out of their reach
🍗 The smell of cooking meats will be very enticing to your pet but cooked bones, skewers and particularly, Corn-on-the-cob (which cannot be digested) can all have nasty consequences – make sure they are out of reach and if you drop anything, be very quick to pick it up
🍔 Greasy food can upset your pets digestive system – it is kinder to keep them to their usual diet or a bit of plain cooked chicken (if you cannot resist those puppy eyes!)

And of course, access to shade and fresh cool water is essential for your pet. Do not walk them in the heat of the day and never leave them in your car as temperatures will rise very very rapidly.

Stay safe and have fun!

The Month of June is National Microchip Month! Microchips have been used as early as the 1980’s; however, for a much different purpose: to track wild animals (such as fish) and follow their migration patterns!

Nowadays, microchips are small rice sized data chips that are placed between the shoulder blades of an animal (usually cat or dog but can even be used in other animals like tortoises and rabbits). They have yet to develop into ‘live trackers’ but instead the data is shared when scanned by a microchip scanner. This means when you move house or change phone numbers, the database must be updated to keep the information up to date. Doing this will help to reunite you quickly with your pet, should they go missing.

You can find out which database your pet’s microchip is registered with by putting the chip number into the Check-a-Chip website: https://www.check-a-chip.co.uk

This is lovely Jasper who used to get grass seeds in his ears A LOT and needed to be sedated to remove them. His owner found some 'ear defenders' for Jasper to wear when out on walks which has saved him from getting any more! Still need to watch his paws, but a great little invention so Jasper can run free through the grass! 😍

Staff pet kittens Pip and Seb visited Nurse Lauren last week for their second vaccinations😺✨
Afterwards they were very dozy 💤! This is very normal behaviour for kittens, especially after a visit to the vets!
Other behaviours post vaccination to look out for are:
😺Usually, cats are much quieter and in need of some rest.
😺They will usually hideaway for a bit, so don’t be alarmed if your kitten is in need of ‘me time’.
😺Sometimes, after receiving a vaccine, cats may try to lick or rub the injection site. This is usually temporary but do contact us if you have any concerns.
😺Small swelling at the site of the vaccination can sometimes occur, this usually resolves in a few days/weeks.
Do not hesitate to contact your vet if you have any concerns - we can answer questions via our WhatsApp (07360 277998), and you can even send photos for us to look at.

Vanessa chose Larkmead as she had prior experience using us as her local vets and has been loving her journey into small animal care! Vanessa has two Romanian dogs🐶 and a bearded dragon (named Dragon🐲✨)! If Vanessa was an animal, she'd chose to be a cockatoo as loves the idea of flying🐣✨

This is lovely Gus (along with brother Eddie) who is a regular visitor to Larkmead. He used to find visiting the vets scary and react fearfully but now he loves vet Florena and even waits for her to come back into the room 😂 (or maybe it’s the treats! 😉).

Gus is a French Bulldog and he, like many of his breed, needed BOAS surgery (BOAS is brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome – basically where the formation of the jaw and nose do not allow adequate intake of oxygen). This involved widening his nostrils (nares) and removing some of the soft palate from the back of his throat. Vet Florena performed Gus’ surgery in January, and this has helped to improve his quality of life although he does still suffer with regurgitation which we are still working on getting under control with medication.

Margot is a gorgeous eight-year-old English Pointer who’s owner noticed that she was a bit sore in her right forelimb. At her consultation, Vet Laura trimmed Margot’s nails💅 and sedated her to x-ray🏥.
This x-ray showed early signs of arthritis in her carpus (the equivalent of a human wrist). Treatment for this will be managed via regular medication and we are pleased to say that Margot has shown signs of being much more comfortable since starting her treatment.
Whilst she was sedated, Laura took Margot into our dental suite for a scale and polish to reduce the build-up of plaque🦷✨ which will help to prevent periodontal disease.
