Recently, Vet Izzy was visited by the rather sweet Wally the duck🦆✨

Wally had developed bumblefoot which is a bacterial infection that occurs on the feet of birds and sometimes other small mammals. This usually originates from a graze or a cut from standing on rough ground or anything that could pierce the skin🩹. Sometimes surgery is needed, but in Wally's case Izzy was able to prescribe some medication💊 to help fight the infection (along with lots of swimming!) 🌊✨💜

The gorgeous Neela, a British Short Haired cat, visited Larkmead Vets to be spayed.

This procedure prevents pregnancies as it removes the ovaries and uterus (this is often referred to as an ovariohysterectomy). This is what happens:
😺The kitten receives an injection into the muscle called a premed injection which makes the patient sleepy.
😺An intravenous catheter in placed into the front leg, so that the anaesthetic induction agent can be given.
😺The patient then receives some local anaesthesia spray into the throat to numb the throat and prevent spasms from the gag reflex when they are intubated (a breathing tube is inserted to be used during the anaesthetic).
😺The flank area is then shaved and scrubbed clean to ensure a sterile operating field.
😺As previously mentioned, an ovariohysterectomy is performed removing the ovaries and uterus (as seen in picture!)
😺The wound is then sutured closed using suture material that will dissolve with time.
😺The patient is then gently woken up and taken into a quiet area to receive food and water after the procedure🥗😺✨ ready for their return home later in the day

A mini pupdate on Alfie!

Originally, in his clinics with Nurse Kate, Alfie was too afraid to enter the actual practice building🏥. Due to the consistency of his visits with his owner and the excellent work of Nurse Kate; they managed to complete their first confidence clinic in doors👏✨💜

As you can see, Alfie is making huge progress, and Nurse Kate will continue to work with Alfie and his mum in helping Alfie feel. more comfortable at the vets.

❄️ Here are a few tips for keeping your rabbits safe and happy this winter ❄️

⛄️ When the temperature drops your friend may need some extra bedding to snuggle up in. Try to make sure their hutch is off the ground, sheltered from the icy wind and rain and that there are no leaks. Don’t be tempted to use mains powered heat pads or hot water bottles as your rabbit may chew through the wires or rubber.

⛄️ In a very cold snap, you may wish to move the hutch into your garage or shed if possible – if not, cover the front of the hutch with an old blanket or towel and insulate under their straw with newspaper. Don’t park your car in a garage being used by your rabbit as they are very sensitive to carbon monoxide fumes.

⛄️ Check that the water bottle has not frozen and the little ball is still moving freely and provide plenty of hay for your rabbit to munch.

⛄️ Make sure your hutch is secure as foxes are much bolder in the winter when their access to other sources of food is reduced.

⛄️ Daily exercise is still essential but ensure your rabbit is dried thoroughly with a towel before being returned to their hutch.

❄️ Ultimately, rabbits can cope fairly well with the cold temperature as long as they not in damp conditions or cold draughts and that sudden changes in temperatures are avoided.❄️

Meet the gorgeous Nelson, an African Mastiff!!🐶✨ Nelson visited Larkmead Vets to sort out his tail as repeated trauma from it hitting things when he wagged, caused a lump to form, which then often bled.

To remedy this, Vet Vikki performed a minor amputation of the tail as it was affecting Nelson’s quality of life. There are many reasons to amputate a dog’s tail but in the case of Nelson, he was suffering with what is known as ‘happy tail’. This is more common in larger dog breeds with muscular tails💪✨, like Labradors and Great Danes (and Mastiffs!).

Nelson is now on the mend and should have an improved quality of life without repeated injury to his happy tail ✨💜

Staff pet Stephen visited Larkmead to be neutered😺 by Vet Rose🩺

For male cats and animals this means the process of removing the testicles to prevent the production of s***m. This is what happens:

😺The kitten receives an intramuscular premed injection which makes the patient sleepy.
😺An intravenous catheter is placed into the front leg to allow the anaesthetic drug to be injected to keep the patient asleep for the procedure.
😺The kitten is then supplemented with oxygen via a mask to support them during their anaesthetic.
😺The testicle area is then plucked and shaved to make sure the area is ready for cleaning.
😺The area is scrubbed clean so that it’s aseptic and ready for surgery.
😺Two small incisions are made to retrieve the testicles.
😺The testicles are then tied and snipped off. No stitches or tissue glue is applied as the small wound can heal naturally for this procedure.
😺The patient is then gently woken up and taken into a quiet area and given some food and water 🥗😺✨ ready for their return home later in the day✨💜

When we are cold, they are COLD!
Here are some hints and tips to keep your small furry friends warm in the colder weather:
❄️ In the wild rabbits would keep warm in underground burrows so provide plenty of bedding for them to bury under
❄️ Keep hutches and sheds well insulated, warm, dry, and out of draughts. Tarpaulin with old blankets or a duvet underneath are great ways to keep them warm.
❄️ Provide lots of warm areas packed with straw, please don’t use additional heating pads as they can get too hot
❄️ Cover and insulate water bottles to ensure that they don’t freeze, a thermal sock is great for this.
❄️ Ensure that their run is safe, secure and covered. Rabbits should always be able to choose between a run and a safe warm place to hide.

Any questions on getting your small furry friends ready for winter please WhatsApp us on 07360277998.

A Mini pupdate on Patch🐶!!
Patch has continued working with nurse Kate🩺 in their confidence clinics mainly focusing on muzzle training✨!!

Muzzle training can be very important for any dog visiting the vets who may react fearfully as it keeps the animal and our staff safe💜✨. The key is to ensure that the muzzle is familiar and does not cause an added stress by building a positive relationship between the dog and the muzzle.

Patch has made significant progress with his muzzle!! Here in this video his owner works with Patch getting used to having his muzzle on and then I work with him with his muzzle. His owner will now continue to increase the duration of time that Patch has his muzzle on. We’re so very proud of this little man, who was originally petrified of visiting the vets!!!✨💜

In the very cold weather we see a marked increase in cystitis (bladder inflammation) in cats. Unsurprisingly they don’t like going out in the cold, wet, wind or snow and find it hard to dig the ground to go to the toilet. Because of this they are more likely to hold on and this can cause problems. Not only is cystitis very painful but in male cats, it can lead to a blocked bladder. This is where the cat is unable to pass urine at all and is a very serious life threatening condition. We advise providing an indoor litter tray for your cat during cold spells to help prevent any problems arising. Place the tray in a quiet area your cat has easy access to and change it regularly. Most cats that normally go outside prefer not to use a litter tray and once the weather improves will be happy to go back to their normal routine.
