Frank the pumpkin head is great entertainment and a lovely treat for our girls ๐
๐๐ฆWe wanted to share a slow-motion video of one of our ducks enjoying the pool ๐ฆ๐ Isnโt it just so much fun?!? ๐
This morning we collected these lovely ducks and they are loving the water, sun and stretching their wings after the journey to us. Now the last stage โฆ.. being picked up to go to their forever pond. We love happy endings ๐ฅฐ๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ฆ๐
Weโre so happy to say that our lovely new lady has a name and is settling in well!
Our Poll was 50/50 between Myrtle and Beaky, but we asked a friend to choose and she went with Myrtle so here we are!
A beautiful sunny day to introduce herself to her new sisters too! ๐ฅฐ
They are not โjust a chickenโ for so many reasonsโฆ.this is one. As usual she jumped 3 fences to get to the kitchen ๐๐๐๐
๐๐๐ Update:- Samantha has made her decision and these lovely girls are now going to have a fantastic life with one of our volunteers. What a fantastic and successful day it was. Thank you all ๐๐๐
These 6 beautiful girls are looking for a new home together. Due to change in circumstances their current owner has to give them up and is heartbroken about that. So understandably she would like them to go to a home where they will be much loved pets. For details please contact us and weโll put you in touch ๐๐๐
As most of you know, we keep every special-needs chicken and most of you know about our crossbeak Wonka. This is her after having been fed and warming up with heat packs. Put up the volume and you can hear her enjoying a cuddle and the warmth ๐๐๐๐
And the saga of Wonkaโs great escape adventures continuesโฆ ๐ Caught in the act! No shame whatsoever ๐
Granted I was a few minutes after 9am late for her breakfastโฆ I think weโre going to have to go full Jurassic Park fences for this clever little dinosaur!
Most of you know about Wonka, our cross beak girl. We brought her back from a farm a couple of years ago, hardly alive but she has since doubled her weight and is loving life! Because she needs to be hand fed 3x a day, she knows her feeding times and if youโre not on time she will try to jump fences so she can come to the kitchen door, knock on the door demanding to be fedโฆNOW! ๐
Today I caught her taking advantage of the tree that fell at the weekend so she could get out of her enclosure easier โฆ. We love that funny girl ๐ฅฐ๐
This post may be difficult for some of you to see, but we feel itโs important to share the realities of what happens on some of these farms.
Thankfully, battery farms are now being phased out but they wonโt be gone until 2025. Traditional battery farms were actually banned in 2012, instead being replaced with โenrichedโ cages which are only better by the smallest margin. That only means slightly more space per hen and actually having a plastic flap for their egg box. Of course this isnโt the case for all farms and we are happy to say a lot of farmers are now eager to see this disappear as well.
Thankfully I can confirm that Elvie is now coming up to two years free of these conditions. She still struggles with absent seizures and sheโs had a couple of poorly episodes, but she is so loved and adores her cuddles with her human. Sheโs cheeky, adorable, smart and definitely the most thankful for her freedom now. Every day is lived to her fullest.
Donโt forget you can easily help with something as simple as checking the codes inside your egg boxes and spending a couple of extra pennies buying either free range or organic options; obviously with the cost of living being so high at the moment this isnโt always possible, but local egg farmers and hen keepers may be willing to help with that as well. Research is so important to these girls.
Oh, and hey, if youโd like more updates on our Dorset hens, please follow Wonka on TikTok and Facebook. Thereโs also been a small post (hopefully getting expanded at some point if I can wiggle my way in ๐ ) about Elvie herself on our website, so donโt hesitate to drop in and have a five minute read on that.
This morning has been a little bit quackers for our amazing Team up and down the UK and ducks have arrived safely at our Dorset Collection Point this afternoon! Theyโre now going to enjoy a well deserved little rest before moving onto their new homes for wonderful retirements ๐ฅฐ๐
Theyโve already got their own paddling pool to cool off in in the heat though, plus food and some cosy companionship with each other ๐๐ฆ
And hereโs a little fact for you all to have a little think aboutโฆ Did you know that ducks can have accents of their own? Itโs true! Ducks that live in the city are generally a lot louder than ones that live in the countryside. They must think cars are competition ๐๐ฆ
โฆ..and just because it is so cute here is another ๐โค๏ธ
One of the girls we brought back needed a foot bath as her toes were caked in old dried up mud and ๐ฉ So sheโs been having the spa treatments she deserves until it soaks off. Judge for yourself, do you think sheโs enjoying it? ๐ฅฐ We donโt have to hold her at all โฆ.
I love what we do โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
And a video of our favourite sightโฆan empty barn ๐๐๐
