We laid some rubber matting today over another bit of wettest mud โœ…๏ธ
The ponies have lots of little pathways like this all around the track, plus plenty of matted and hardcore areas to eat and rest. ๐Ÿ˜
Mud really isn't an issue as long as they have options to get out of it when they want. Not even Miriam minds it as much as you'd think ๐Ÿซ
We'll be very glad of it when the grass starts shooting up in a few weeks! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘Š

These same issues affect SO many horses & ponies across the world. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

One pony at a time, things are changing in the equine world. One day incorrect hoofcare and grazing on lush green grass will be a thing of the past ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ˜

Welcome to your forever home Georgie! โœด๏ธ

He is a 12 year old minature shetland pony- the same breed and age as our other boys Alfie and Rufus ๐Ÿด

Georgie arrived a couple of weeks ago, and is now out of quarantine. This means it's now safe for him to have contact with our other ponies ๐Ÿฅณ

He has some health issues currently, but these should all resolve over time, now he's living grass-free on our track system.

I will do a further post explaining more soon.
For now, he is settling in, and meeting the rest of the herd over the gates.
Face-to-face intros start tomorrow!

Very sad to tell you all that a few days ago we said our final goodbyes to our darling donkey, Kingpin ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿซโœจ๏ธ
Following a short period of illness, it was the kindest option to let him go over the rainbow bridge ๐ŸŒˆ
He was 25years old and had struggled with some health issues.
We managed them sucessfully for around 5 years, but it became apparent he was quite suddenly no longer comfortable or happy ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿฅบ
He is now resting peacefully with his brother Zentor in heaven ๐Ÿ•Š๐Ÿค๐ŸŒˆโœจ๏ธ

We'd love to see your photos and hear your memories of our beautiful boy ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿฅฐ

All prepared for tonight! ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿซฃ Extra nets out, breakaway headcollars on, and the donkeys and ponies are seperated for the night to reduce any injuries. โœ…๏ธ

Just a reminder if you are staying on park,
Please DO NOT set fireworks off โŒ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฅโŒ๏ธ (sparklers are fine)

Fireworks are extremely stressful for the animals, and can cause them to injure themselves through sheer panic, getting stuck in fencing etc.
Also as it's windy tonight, they could land in their enclosures ๐Ÿ˜ณ

K.P's weight loss! โœจ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

2๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ2๏ธโƒฃ4๏ธโƒฃ- KP lives on a grass free track system, in a herd of 5, 24/7 and has constant access to mixed meadow hay.
Mixed hay is the most appropriate forage for domesticated equines (ponies, donkeys, horses & mules) ๐ŸŒพ
The right type of hay is low sugar and high fibre, which is what equines have evolved over millions of years to eat. Equines are trickle feeders, meaning they are designed to eat little and often, with a constant 'trickle' of food going through their system. ๐Ÿ‘
This combined with lots of free choice movement helps to keep him at a healthier weight โœ…๏ธ๐Ÿ™
He does still have a neck crest, this is soft and wobbly, which is a good sign. He will probably never fully get rid of it due to the extent of his previous obesity.

2๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ1๏ธโƒฃ8๏ธโƒฃ- KP lived in a large paddock with his brother Zentor. His diet was largely high sugar rye grass, which can be 300-600 times higher in sugar than hay. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
Most grass in the UK is unsuitable for equines due to it being low in fibre (too fast to digest, doesn't require much teeth grinding or salva)
This is partly due to our warm, wet climate, great for grass growing!
Also after WW2 britain re-planted many historical meadow paddocks with Rye grass, which is usually fed to farm animals, to help with food production.
He had far too much dietary sugar, which made him extremely obese.
You can see the excess fat deposits all over his body.

Now he is much slimmer, happier and healthier, both mentally, physically
His hooves are now showing huge improvements due to his improved diet๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿคฉโœจ๏ธ

HAPPY 1 YEAR MIRIAM ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿซ (A write up by Zara ๐Ÿฅฐ)

Dear Miriam,

You sweet little soul.
I'm so glad you came into our lives. It's been a year now.
A year since your terrified, shaking, thin, lice infested, soaking wet little self clattered off the trailer, never to step foot in there again, or so you'd planned ๐Ÿคช
A year since you did absolute acrobatics for the farrier ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™€๏ธ

And a year since I spent 45minutes being dragged across the paddock during your vet visit. We got the blood eventually.... ๐Ÿ™ˆ
My personal highlight was trying to lice spray you when you were totally feral. I think I was as scared as you lol. By the end we were both hyperventilating ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฃ

Next was getting you used to being touched, with a glove on a stick.
Although this worked to begin with and broke the initial barrier, I soon decided that I needed to try something else. You just didn't seem to get it. You were totally oblivious to what I was trying (failing) to ask you. It was clear the only handling you'd ever had was leading. The only thing you've been great at since day 1.

After getting kicked and my shoulder pulled, (my fault) I bought a book on clicker training and stayed up until 3am reading it. I was scared I'd never be able to handle you safely.

I tried it the next morning. Within 15mins you understood what I wanted. Touch the cone. I couldn't believe it & I sat on the floor of the stable and cried (lol if you know me well, you KNOW ๐Ÿคช)

From there it's just blossomed and you are so switched on. So clever and try so hard. You were so shut down when you arrived and only in the last few months have I realised just how much you've come out of your shell.

Over time you have learnt to trust. You learnt to eat, as you wouldn't eat a thing on arrival. You learnt what ponies are, and how to use a haynet, with help from KP.

You are so good with your feet, the easiest actually out of our gang. You'll tolerate grooming, your least favourite activity, as long as I have your beloved clicker ๐Ÿ™ˆ
You're happy to have your teeth done with no sedation, injections, and even load into the trailer, something I didn't think you'd ever do.

I've learnt so much from you this last year, you've certainly made me!

Most people are going to read this and think 'it's just a donkey' but frankly I don't care. It's been such a journey and it's flown by ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿ˜Š
Here's to many more years Miriam ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ•Š

Alfie had a little pedicure ๐Ÿด๐Ÿงก

Alfie is a minature shetland pony, so this is as big as he'll get! He can be quite clingy with our other ponies but this has massively improved since we've added Blackberry โœจ๏ธ
He needs 6monthly massage/body work as he gets a little stiff in his back & hind legs, but this keeps him ticking over and comfortable! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Welcome to our 7 new girlies! ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ˜
(Last pic are our 3 resident older chickens)

They are ex commercial hens, used in large scale egg farming, hence their current rough looks! ๐Ÿ˜ข

Did you know โ“๏ธ

Commerical laying hens are usually kept in barns, of between 16-32,000 ๐Ÿ˜ณ
They lay from about 18weeks old to 72weeks, where they generally lay an egg every day! ๐Ÿ‘ Go on girls! ๐Ÿฉท
Over 12 billion eggs are consumed in the UK every year, and 84% of these came from British farms in 2023. ๐Ÿฅš
At 72 weeks, (approx 18months old) the hens are then slaughtered, as their productivity drops slightly.
Lucky ones get saved by charities such as Fresh Start For Hens or British Hen Welfare Trust ๐Ÿ” โค๏ธ

Traditional battery cages were thankfully made illegal in the UK in 2012- however 'enriched' cages are still used, although are now less common than 'free range' barns. These 'enriched' cages are still only 600mm squared per bird, which is around an A4 piece of paper each. They have no solid floor.

'Free range' barns are like big polytunnels, and are usually huge groups of thousands. Birds are moved around in rotational groups based on age. They do have perches to roost and sometimes different 'tiers' to use as extra floor space. Some have natural light, and occasionally a small outdoor area.
RSPCA assured egg farms must always have access to an outdoor area during daylight hours.

It's best to purchase organic free range eggs, as these farms must have constant access to outdoor areas with vegetation (plants/grass) on organic land.

Ex commercial hens really do make fantastic pets and are usually very loving and tame. ๐Ÿฅฐ
It's really rewarding to watch them recover and experience their new world. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ”

Please consider re-homing a few, you'll have your very own eggs and they're very easy to care for ๐Ÿ˜‡

MIRIAM DID IT ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿซ
Still emotional even looking at these pics ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜…

I am SO unbelievably proud of her ๐Ÿฅฐ How has she been at Meadow Lakes almost a year?!

This is the first time she has gone inside the trailer since her arrival in Oct 2023. Even when it was her only shelter during her initial isolation period, she still refused and would rather stand in the rain ๐Ÿ˜ข

I know most of you have never even met her, but this is SO HUGE for her.
She is sadly incredibly traumatised by her previous life, but is improving all the time โ˜บ๏ธ
For Miriam to put her trust in me yesterday and just keep focused on her target (the cone) is just brilliant. ๐Ÿฅณ The power of the clicker ! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Now to reinforce it ๐Ÿ‘
