Arousal vs. Drive: Balancing Energy for Success in Dogs

When it comes to dogs, particularly high energy, high drive breeds, understanding the relationship between arousal and drive is critical. These two concepts shape how a dog engages with tasks and determine their ability to perform effectively.
Drive vs. Arousal
• Drive is the dog’s innate desire to work or perform a specific task. It’s a natural trait and sets the foundation for focus and determination.
• Arousal refers to the dog’s current level of excitement or energy. Unlike drive, it’s situational and influenced by the environment.
While drive is a constant, arousal fluctuates and must be managed for optimal performance. (Frawley, E. (2018). Training High-Drive Dogs.)

High Drive vs. High Arousal
• When drive outweighs arousal: The dog channels its energy into focused, productive work.
• When arousal outweighs drive: The dog may appear frantic, unfocused, or chaotic, which hinders learning and performance.

How Scent Sports Help Balance Arousal and Drive

Nice looking venue too

First night in the new venue with a 121 with team Kali

The wee superstar only went and passed her novice and intermediate catnip search and retrieve

Awesome job Dave and Jamie have worked really hard on this Miss Kali wasn't always happy to bring the gizet back but with a lot of patience she is retrieving like a wee pro

She also had the first taster of Kong detection and aced it

Great job all round, really looking forward to seeing this wee girl progress
