All vaccinations are important however there is always a small risk of a complication, and this is the same with any species including humans. Recently we had a vaccine reaction in one of our client’s horses, which resulted in a sterile abscess approximately 2cm into the muscle of the horse’s neck. This was located and diagnosed with an ultrasound scan and subsequently operated on to allow it to drain. We are fortunate to have a very good working relationship with the drug companies we use, and as a gesture of good-will they agreed to pay for the work done to resolve this vaccine reaction. 🤩 Although cases like these are rare, they are not uncommon. Our “knock-down” box is where we anaesthetise horses safely. The horses benefit from the soft padded walls, the rubber floor base, and the thick layer of straw in which it lies on.
This box is in regular use, here we have Ollie doing a fantastic job disinfecting and hosing the mats and concrete floor in preparations for our six surgeries next week. 🙌🧽🧹

The images show a weanling with an injury to its lower incisors. The two bottom central teeth were found to be hanging on by a thin piece of gum. This section was cut away and the remaining gum tissue (mucosa), was sutured together using absorbent suture material. This video shows an in-patient recovering from a good anaesthetic post-surgery. This is an excellent recovery; the horse finds his feet quickly benefiting from the rubber matting base which lies beneath the thick straw bed.
