Who remembers this nasty injury? 😣

This horse managed to collide with a fence rail resulting in a nasty laceration to its shoulder. However the wound has healed well, the pictures show the different stages of the healing process. Eventually this horse should present with minor scarring, a great result in comparison to the original wound. 👌

This poor horse managed to collide with a fence rail resulting in a nasty wound to its shoulder. 😣

The wound was thoroughly cleaned and stitched up by one of our vets using a tension relieving suture pattern with stents to help relieve the tautness.

MEET THE TEAM

Olivia Jackson

Ollie joined our team last year, coming to us with a wealth of experience within the racing industry.

Growing up on the family farm in Witheridge she was an active member of the pony club competing regularly at local shows in showjumping and gymkhana. Ollie rode for the North Devon mounted games team representing GB in Ireland and Germany.

Ollie spent a great deal of her time working in point-to-point yards which was the start of her successes in this sphere. She was head girl for David Pipe for many seasons and rode very successfully on the point-to-point circuit. In the year of 2000, Ollie won the area title and took the National Novice Championship title.

In her most recent years Ollie has enjoyed riding out for local trainer Nigel Hawke alongside training her own small string of point-to-pointers.

Outside of work and horses, Ollie can often be found standing on the side of a rugby pitch supporting her son.

Ollie has been a real asset since joining our team and is particularly hands on when it comes to our in-house surgeries. Thank you, Ollie!

Congratulations to client Sian Brown on the safe arrival this morning of this lovely chestnut filly by . 🧡

This mare was diagnosed with an ovarian tumour, which meant she had to undergo surgery for its removal leaving her with only one o***y. This certainly made the journey of conception a trickier one, and this little filly extra special! 👏

The gastroscopy images shown below all come from the same horse. The images with a yellow background were taken in November, when we found grade 4/4 ulceration in the squamous mucosa (left hand image) and severe focal haemorrhagic ulceration in the glandular mucosa, a very sensitive area (right hand image).

This horse received a tailored treatment plan from our vet, with a discussion on its general management, the owners followed our advice to the letter.👌

The images with a blue background were taken recently, after the end of this horses successful competitive season. The images show that although some ulceration is still present, the improvement between November and April is remarkable.

Considering the very complicated ulcer history for this horse and the high demands on her performance, this goes to show that excellent management goes a long way in helping to reduce the recurrence of the same severity of ulcers. Top job from the yard!🌟

Well, our team love a good success story, and Buster as pictured here is a good enough example if any! 😀

Buster (racing name ‘Can’t Say’) was bred by Mrs Jo Stuart out of Lizzy’s Lass by Phenomena.

Buster in his early years has been extremely accident prone, keeping his owner Jo on regular communication with our vets! 🙈

Busters veterinary journey is fairly remarkable…….

🔴At two weeks of age poor Buster needed a joint flush on a septic shoulder.
🔴As a two-year-old he fell under a gate and sustained an injury to a back leg.
🔴Buster was then injured when he was jumped into whilst running in a point-to-point as a seven-year-old.
🔴Two months after his point-to-point injury he managed to get stuck in a rylock fence injuring his pastern!

However, after all of this he 🏆WON🏆 at Ffos Las Racecourse this week in the Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, trained by Chris Down and ridden by James Davies. Congratulations to his owner Mrs Jo Stuart and to the team at Chris Down Racing and well done Buster you got there in the end! 🥳

Have you ever heard the saying ‘it was like looking for a needle in a haystack’, well this was certainly the case for this referral.

This smart hunter was referred to us by Fiona Jacob of Tomlinson Equine Vet Practice, after diagnosing a thorn in the horses leg (see attached scan picture).

The referring practice’s ultrasound scan clearly shows the foreign body. The thorn which was approximately 5mm in length was found embedded in the lateral branch of the suspensory ligament. In the expert hands of our vets this tiny thorn head was successfully removed. ⭐️

Thank you to Tomlinson Equine for this referral, and great work from our team with a positive outcome for this beautiful horse. 🤗

This beautiful filly by Grane Valley Elton is the mare’s (Tremlows Amethyst) third foal and the covering stallions second, the first being born a day earlier out of Tremlows Amethyst’s daughter, Petronella.

This is a busy time of year for the practice with the stud and foaling season in full swing! 😅

‘HAZY DREAM’ won the Novices’ Handicap Hurdle for joint owners Mr Alan Smith and Miss Lara Pope, this little mare by Dream Eater, ran a fantastic race winning by 6 1/2 lengths under jockey Ben Jones.

Our practice is passionate about following the results of the horses that are under our care, and this is especially true for this mare who has previously suffered with leg issues and underwent a wind surgery this spring.
