Vet Rachel and Vet Nurse Emma were so pleased to be able to help this beautiful cormorant, a few weeks ago.
Even just safely handling it was a new challenge.
He initially recovered well from the anaesthetic (we used a duck protocol!) and the trauma of a barbed fishing hook being deeply embedded through his lower beak.
We were therefore, very sad to hear recently from Secret World, that after their post op efforts, he was not able to feed well enough to be released and lead a full wild life, hence was put to sleep.
We are very delighted to welcome the lovely Greta to our nursing team.
Some of you may recognise her already ☺️
Greta has been at Bristol university for the last 4 years, studying for her Veterinary Nursing degree and has been spending time here at the practice, honing her practical skills!
She has spent the last month travelling in Thailand but has decided to settle here and join us full time now.
As you can see, she loves cats and Muriel has certainly taken a liking to Greta… 💕💕
Today is National Dog Day 2024!
A day to raise awareness of all those dogs who are looking for their forever homes and to celebrate everything dogs do for us.
As you can imagine, we at Nurture are all big dog lovers and we have quite a few between us!!
They come in all shapes and sizes and they make us smile every day - here are some of them 😊
We’d love to see some photos of your dogs too 🐶 🐩 🐕

Happy International Cat Day 2024!!
Cats are incredible but they do seem to us mere people, to do weird things!
Or do they?
Here’s a few of their wonderful idiosyncrasies and why they do them…

It’s the final day of Rabbit Awareness Week 2024!
It’s Friday so just for fun, Vet Nurse Emma challenged her rabbit to a munching contest!
Of course Lord Watercress was the clear winner🌟👏🌟
Did you know rabbits spend up to 80% of their day foraging and munching🐰🥕🥬🌾🍃🌿🐰
This does a great natural job of keeping their digestion and their dental health running smoothly 👌

Occasionally, we get a rather special wildlife visitor arrive at the surgery and this beautiful tawny owl certainly cheered our Friday afternoon!
He had flown into the front of a car and got completely caught up in the bumper.
Our quick thinking receptionist Carey, witnessed the incident and rushed him straight to the surgery in a dark box.
He was dazed and ruffled but after a rest and a thorough check up by Saskia and Courtney, he was deemed fit for release 🦉
See comments for the moment of release..
At Puppy School this week we were practicing how to introduce novel items to our pups.
Some great handling of Frankie, Maisie, Ted, Barney and Dax meant that all of these new experiences were taken slowly with lots of praise, play and tasty treats.
This way the pups associate what they are being exposed to, something new, as a fun experience😊
Our fabulous bunch of Puppy School graduates this course have given us many laughs and much fun amongst the lessons!
Well done Kobi, Norman (the elusive!) Mabel, Jersey, Amber, Rita and one very worn out Wesley 🐶🐾🐶🐾
This is Barney and he definitely deserves to look very proud of himself!
Barney loves nothing more than a trip out with his Dad, riding on his mobility scooter, taking in the air and enjoying the village.
One terrible morning, a mishap occurred and he ended up underneath the scooter and was dragged on the road..
Poor Barney was shocked, very sad and extremely painful, with some extensive wounds, when he arrived at the surgery.
He was admitted for several days of intensive care - IV fluids, high levels of pain relief and debridement/dressing changes.
He was not a happy boy and despite our best efforts, he struggled to appreciate his nursing care😞
Over the next few weeks, he was superbly cared for at home (his much preferred option!) with frequent visits to see us, for wound care/dressing changes (he just about tolerated!)
He now comes bouncing into the practice, smiling and joyful with a bit of hair loss, some delicate new skin and a story to tell.
Did it put him off his morning jaunts on the scooter?
Absolutely not!!
He’s back out there, proud as punch to see another day.
Barney, we all think you are amazing 💕💕
