We are very happy to announce that we are officially a Dog Friendly Accredited Practice! 🐶💖

The Dog Friendly Clinic Accreditation is a certification run by Dogs Trust, that confirms we meet set standards to ensure the dogs in our care are treated with fear free methods, and that their visit to the clinic is as calm as possible.

It also means that Nurse Hannah is on their list of Dog Friendly Advocates. She said "I’m elated that we are a now officially a Certified Dog Friendly Clinic - providing a safe, fear free experience is at the core of the care we provide to our patients, and I’m so pleased that we have the recognition for this”

Did you know dogs can only sweat from their paws? 🐾

This means that (along with being covered in fur!) they can overheat much quicker than us, leading to heat stroke.

Symptoms of heat stroke include:

- Heavy panting
- Sticky, thick drool
- Bright red gums
- Restlessness
- Collapse

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke, phone 01305 784197 or your nearest emergency vet immediately. Heat stroke can be fatal - keep your dogs cool this heatwave 🔥

🧊☀ What treats can I give my pet to keep them cool and entertained without a walk?☀️🧊

Many dogs will have to skip their walks and stay inside this week due to the heat - to keep them entertained (and cool!), you can use some frozen/cold treats as enrichment.

1. LickiMats - a great way to prolong treats, and make them more challenging/entertaining. You can use blueberries, xylitol free peanut butter or plain unsweetened yoghurt on them and put them in the freezer.

2. Frozen watermelon - deseeded and rind removed.

3. Frozen veg - celery and peeled cucumber/courgette are a great, low calorie, high water option to treat your pet in hot weather.

*Remember: all treats should be given in moderation. Only give what is suitable to your dog - if they are prone to an upset tummy, new treats + heat can be a bad combination! Always monitor your pet while they are eating a treat. Cut fruit/vegetables length ways to reduce choking hazard*

☀🧊What products can I use to keep my pet safe in the sun?🧊☀

It's warming up again, meaning it is important to be prepared.
Aside from the main things to remember (skip the walk, stay inside or the shade, water always available), what products can you use to help keep your pet cool?

1. Pet safe suncream - for white pets, those with pink skin or minimal/no fur - UV protection is very important. Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to burns, just like us. Use a pet safe suncream on their most at risk areas of skin, keep in the shade and avoid exposure to the sun

2. Cooling mats and bandanas - these products that most pet shops will be selling at this time of year are really useful tools to keep your pet cool. Wet towels and tile floors provide a similar effect if you can't get these - just remember to never cover your pet with a wet towel as it can trap the heat.

3. Pools and sprinklers - an easy and fun way to keep your dogs cool in the heat. Just remember they can still get too hot if they get overly excited!

✨ 🩺 Monday Vet Highlights🩺✨

This month we’ll be celebrating our lovely Vet’s skill sets and passions every Monday - this week is the lovely Laura.

Laura is already a fantastic surgeon, and wants to take her skills to the next level. To do this, she is studying a Certificate in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery that she started in April.

Many vets choose to undertake post graduate certificates to refine the skills they are most passionate about. These are long and very in depth courses.

About why she wants to do this, Laura said “I love surgery because it keeps my hands busy. I have always needed a project on the go at home, be it crochet, knitting, DIY.
I also find what we can achieve with surgery in terms of outcome for the patient exciting and intriguing”

🔥 BE CAREFUL IN THE HOT WEATHER! 🔥

There’s warm weather approaching, and it’s really important to be prepared for your pets. Our overall advice is that if you are in doubt - keep your pets inside in the cool.

Heat stroke can set in quicker than you think, and in cooler whether than you think - anything above 20 degrees can be a risk, and different dogs will have different tolerances to others.

1. Shade or keep inside
Make sure your pet always has access to shade, if not kept inside in the cool

2. Provide water at all times
Drinking water must always be available. Water to play/cool down in is also beneficial if outside

3. Care with brachycephalic pets
Panting and heat can be much more strain on brachycephalic dogs than others. Always lean on the side of careful for them - avoid walks, minimise exposure to the heat

4. Don’t walk if too hot, and never leave in the car
A bored, un-walked dog is better than an overheated one. Dogs can over exert themselves quickly in the heat - if you are going to walk your dog, keep it short, and in the cooler hours of the day.
If you are going out and about in the car - keep windows open and aircon on. Never leave your dog unattended in the car.

It’s warming up again! Stay safe! ☀️🔥
