Most humans have a heart rate of approximately 60 to 80 beats per minute whereas the normal heart rate of a cat is anywhere from 150 to 210 beats per minute. This is because cats are smaller than humans so require a faster heart rate to deliver oxygen and nutrients around the body!

Its soon to be New Years Eve. And while its a time to celebrate, its also a time to be mindful of the use of fireworks and the need to keep pets extra safe during this period. The noise and lights can be hugely stressful and frightening for our animals, who do not understand what the fireworks are. So be sure to follow our 6 pet firework safety tips;

1. Keep your pets indoors - make sure all pets are safely indoors before the evening starts this New Years Eve weekend

2. Create a safe space - make sure they have their favorite bed and blankets available to them. Could their bed be moved to a place in the house that is likely to be less exposed to the fireworks? Or a place where human friends and family will be, which could help comfort your pet if they start to feel scared? Make sure they are happy with any new bed location before the weekend celebrations start.

3. Walk dogs before the evening starts - plan your weekend walks so you are safely home before darkness begins and any fireworks start.

4. Mask noise with calming music - if your pet enjoys classical music, then this can be played to help relax them. if music is not for them, how about a relaxing diffuser such as Feliway for cats?

5. Provide a distraction - provide their favourite toys or a food related puzzle to keep them busy when the noises start. distracting with play and games can help relax your pet, and also you as the owner. Its important to stay calm yourself and just be normal around your animal companion, so they can better understand that there is nothing to fear.

6. keep windows and doors closed - closing window and door curtains can also be of benefit to blocking out the light explosions from the firework displays.

Remember to make sure your pets microchip registered address is up to date and consider supporting community organised displays that are held away from residential homes and fielded animals. The more people that attend these displays, the fewer back garden displays that can cause notable stress for our animal companions.

The blue-eyed trait is recessive and most often related to coat colour for example if the fur around your dogโ€™s eyes is white, their chances of having blue eyes increase. Ironically, blue eyes donโ€™t actually have any blue pigment but instead they indicate a lack of pigment.
