Bella & Brave is a sheep and goat sanctuary in Newburgh, Lancashire. Our dream is to move to larger premises where we can open to the public and provide an alternative to petting farms, where people can see rescue animals, eat vegan food, and let their children play. We want to provide a home for sheep, goats, chickens, and other animals where animals can live out their natural lives.

I’m still in search for the perfect coat for Clover, but Robert thinks he’s found the best one 🥴

Video Description: Robert sheep has gone under a picnic bench, stuck his head through a gap between the seat and the table, and is moving round with it on his back 🤣 He did get out!

Another vet visit yesterday 💸

Last week I noticed Jester has gone really skinny - despite actually being the width of a bus (!), his spine and ribs are easy to feel. I found he only had one front tooth left, which makes it really difficult to eat - they actually eat better with no front teeth, rather than just one or two. Vet Danny also found three wobbly molars - which have obviously been causing him pain, and are the reason for his weight loss. So he’s had them all out. Bless him 😢 Danny warned me that goats do struggle to get back to full health even after having the offending teeth removed, so we will keep a close eye. 🤞🤞🤞

Clover also had a check over, after struggling to get up from a few falls. Her arthritis is obviously causing her a lot of pain, so we will give her daily doses of pain killer this week in the hope she improves. If she doesn’t improve quickly, it won’t be fair to submit her to a cold, painful winter… and on top of her sight being poor… it will be kinder to let her go before she suffers too much.

It’s a privilege and a curse to make these decisions for them. I’m glad I can help them on their way when needed, and stop their suffering. 💔

I will keep you updated in the progress of both of them 🐐🐏

If you would like to help with the vet bill, donations, no matter how small, are very much appreciated 🙏:

Time to get more hay in! ❄️
The oldies have been getting some hay for a few weeks, which was very generously given to us by our neighbours 🥰
But with winter setting in, we will need to get some hay for everyone. We’ll only start putting it out when the cold really sets in, especially if snow covers the grass, but we need to have it on standby asap.
I’ve ordered three large bales, which cost around £40 each. Any help towards the cost is really appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

Freddie and Billy-Buttons have both put some good weight on while being in with the oldies, where the get hay. So until we get freezing weather, the two of them are allowed in either field. Like kings, they stand at the gate, and we open it to their demand!

Fencing Appeal Update!
Sorry for keeping you in suspense - we’ve had a few hiccups!
We raised enough to buy all the panels we need 🙌 AND I have found them at a better price - £10 instead of £15 🤩
First; I had to wait to see if we had to move for fireworks night - in which case we would have them delivered to the holiday place. Then were held up a few times, trying to get hold of the seller, and THEN we realised Jake couldn’t fit them all in one journey 🫣 So now we’re trying to get transport for 30 panels
We have managed to get rid of a few old, bent panels, so progress is being made. It won’t be long before we have some new ones ready use 🙌

Great news! 🙌🥳. After Sunday’s treatments of Footvax and a good hoof soak in Golden Hoof, all the foot rot seems to have gone 🥳 We’ve gone from about 10 animals limping last week, to none today! It was definitely worth all the effort.
Unfortunately though, the bacteria that caused foot rot does stay in the soil, so we will have to repeat the foot baths regularly, at least through winter. But at least we have a great team who know the job 😃

Such an EPIC day!!! With the greatest team EVER, we rounded up all 33 animals. Each got a footvax injection, and a five minute hoof soak to treat/prevent foot rot. In the last couple of weeks, our cases of foot rot seem to have shot up 😭😭😭
Today’s treatment should have a big impact 🤞🤞🤞🤞
The volunteers that came today have all been to help on many occasions and they have become dab-hands at it! Each one is AMAZING 💪🙌🫶

From this picture, you’d think Roman, Billy-Jo and Freddie had done all the hard work 🤣

Uncle B and Ned having a bromance at the moment. We’re still wary headbutts from Uncle B, but we’re sure it’s nothing personal - he’s just misunderstood!

Would anyone like a crocosmia? First pic is the actual plant, second pic is what it should look like in flower. As beautiful as it is, it’s toxic, and likely to be the cause of Rhubarb’s poisoning 😞

Another hedgehog found this week. Taken to the vets, but died a few days into treatment 😭 That’s 3 hogs this year, and one last year, all died 😭
I can’t put food out for them, or we’ll get rats. I wish there was something I could do 😭

Rhubarb is doing much better today. The vet came to give him some jabs for an extra boost, because he’s still not 100%, and he’s still having some charcoal. Mick there in the background, is very jealous of the special treatment 🤣

Please all keep Rhubarb in your thoughts tonight. We found him looking very ill today. Shaking and foaming, unable to walk. I suspected some sort of poisoning immediately, and the emergency vet was called. He improved with having some charcoal while we waited for the vet. The vet gave him a couple of injections, and now he’s doing even better. He needs a few more doses of charcoal over the next few hours, but he certainly isn’t out of the woods yet.

Goats are susceptible to lots of seemingly innocuous plants, and I suspected it could be something growing in the dell, that has been uncovered when we topped the brambles, nettles and balsam. I’ve had a scan of the dell, and found what looks like crocosmia - which is highly toxic. So this week we will have a full search for any more!

Our Story

Bella & Brave is a vegan-run animal sanctuary in Wigan. We started with 8 elderly sheep in February 2017 . Our dream is to move to larger premises where we can open to the public and provide an alternative to petting farms in a mutually respectful setting. Somewhere that people can meet rescue animals, visit a vegan cafe, let their children play, and use the facilities for community groups. We want to provide a home for sheep, goats, chickens, and other animals where animals can live out their natural lives, so we can show people how animals should be looked after and respected.
