I’ve just made up our latest batch of ‘Billy-Button’s Special Arthritis Mix’ - and we have none left after that 😭 This batch will last a couple of months, and then we need more money to get more in - and it’s expensive stuff. We carefully select everything we give the animals, ensuring the best quality is used and it has no animal ingredients.
This mix is completely vegan. The Simple Systems Joint Eclipse kept my very arthritic horse pain-free for years, and now seems to be helping the goats too! The Riaflex 50:50 was something I discovered a long time ago, when looking for a 100% vegan glucosamine - brilliant stuff. My search for vegan chondroitin was tough, but eventually I came across ‘phytodroitin’ - a vegan alternative. I can only find it in tablet form, so I grind it up, and mix it with the other two.
All highly recommended products 🥰

It’s definitely been an indoor kind of day 🌧️🌧️🌧️
I’ve been laid up with a very painful throat infection, but Jayne and Karla have done a brilliant job of tending to some poorly hooves. Volunteers truly are amazing 🤩 and I’d be screwed without them.

We also have a massive £800 vet bill to pay 😭😭😭😭 (guess who forgot to check page 2 last time it came in 😭

People often ask me if it’s easy to look after goats, and my answer is always the same… “it’s easy, until it’s not”.
Today was one of those days it’s not. Karla, contacted me to say Freddie wasn’t well. I dropped everything and rushed down there to find he had bloat. The vet was called, and after several jabs, and a tube to his stomach, he’s getting better. It’s 10.30pm now, and I’m just back from my final check of the night. 🫩 But thankfully, Freddie will be fine. 🥰
Oh, and just as I left the house… thunder and lightning, followed by heavy rain 🤦‍♀️

😯 what’ve you got there?! Fawn is completely blind now, so you’ll have to tell her. She’s obviously loving all the turmeric in her feed!

We’re doing everything we can for her - we’ve made her pen smaller, and she has just 3 friends in with her - 2 of them wearing bells. We are constantly assessing her quality of life but it’s so hard to know when they can’t tell you 😪

Also… a little hello 👋 to some of my gamer friends who have just started following us! You know who you are 😘⚔️

Boris knows exactly what to do when it’s time for extra feed! All the others rush to the gate, pushing and shoving, but good ol’ Boris saunters over in his own time, the crowds parting before him. He’s a legend 🤟

Boris has a big extra feed of sugarbeet and Readigrass every day, because he struggles to eat due to tooth loss. We allow some others to join him if they need some weigh-gain, or sometime just for a treat!

Cracker has been fitting in nicely with his new friends - here he is feeding with them 🥰
Gordon has his moments, and has been headbutting him - so Gordon may get put with the main hers if he doesn’t start behaving himself!!

Cracker is getting on well with his new friends this morning. Everyone has settled nicely. 😻

Now is a great time to look back on how far he’s come. He arrived looking miserable and full of ‘scab’ (a highly contagious condition in sheep, caused by mites). It took a whole 7 months for him to be clear of scab and safe to mix with other sheep. He’s been desperate to get out of isolation 😢 bleating louder than you could possibly imagine a sheep could bleat !
Rescuing Cracker has been the most rewarding thing to do. It’s what we love to do. It’s what Bella & Brave is all about 💕🐏🐐

Cracker is in with the ‘Oldies’ group at the moment, as a slightly less mobile sheep, born with only 3 hooves. If you want to meet him in person at the sanctuary, follow the outer path around the field to the far side of our field.
