Further to my post on trigger stacking last week, the approaching holidays means Xmas/New Year parties, braais, dinners, pool parties, etc. This could be a nightmare for our pets, so be cognisant of pets struggling with reactivity, anxiety or aggression issues. It may be too much for them to handle and could result in them hiding away in fear or exhibiting other unwanted behaviours. Some pets struggle with PTSD and all the noise, excitement, heightened emotions, music, lights children screaming, etc. may be too much for them during this time. Not all pets are social butterflies so respect their individuality.
Don't take them for granted...ensure that they have a quiet space to retreat to if needed and ensure that they have enough mental stimulation to cope with their emotions. Be careful of children crowding and touching your anxious pet as this could lead to nasty accidents.
I deal with a lot of incidents and concerns raised by guardians after such events as their pets could not cope and hence acted out to people, children or other dogs in the family.
Have a plan for them this holiday season. Don't expect them to 'just get over it'.
