A lovely day spent at the Bristol and West Working Gundog Society held on the Badminton Estate. A fantastic well organised day, great atmosphere, helpful judges and lovely spaniel ground. A big thank you to Ade and her team.

I entered Clem “Corbinsbere Perrys Puffin” in the Puppy test, her first taste at competing and what a little star coming away with a COM.

Another good day at the office, I am always very proud to see clients entering working tests, as I know this can be a big deal so to be doing it and enjoying it despite the nerves well done! 👏 🐶🌟

Congratulations to ..
Ian Adamson with Snipe “Corbinsbere Beatnik Billy 4th in Puppy and Steve Viveash with Matilda “Corbinsbere Maison Sassy Com in Puppy. Great work and an added bonus being bred by us!

And…

Harry Godden with Ivy “Vesta a Linguina” and Kim Barnes with Mango “Mooncourt black jack” who both came away with COMs in the Novice.

Well done everyone, great fun out competing with you all and being alongside Lindsey and Dewi too - what a fab day!! 🐶🌟👏

Super proud of Hollie Louise with Indie who will be running alongside Julie Etherington as part of a team spaniel event today at Sherborne Country Fair representing Dorset Working Spaniel Club.

This is far beyond anything I’m sure Hollie could have ever imagined, I remember our first lesson very well, line attached to Indie who had very little self control and was an extremely busy girl with only snippets of focus!! 😬

I could see with hard work and commitment there was potential to go further than a well behaved spaniel. Fast forward a couple of years, Indie has successfully placed in KC working tests as well as running in her first field trial last season. Hollie has shown such dedication to the training, I look forward to watching them both progress this year.

The Very Best of luck Hollie!!! Enjoy!!! 🐶🌟

What a great training day in Dorset today with a fabulous group of 10 handlers and their dogs. 👏🐶

We started the day with split retrieves from an open field into woodland, with the dummies landing out of sight - the dogs had to go through to the woods over the bank or beyond the barrier of the gorse on the other side.

The next task, was a memory out in the open field with the dog navigating through cover to the handler.

Being on such great ground it was hard to resist a hunt up, so we worked in pairs, spaniels hunting through the wood dropping to shot and remaining steady whilst the retrievers were sent back through the woods on a memory. Spaniels were then sent to their retrieve, then asked to hunt on, with the retriever walking in line.

Moving on to water, a short mark across to the island.

Lastly finishing with a blind down the side of the pond up the bank and a mark out into the pond.

A brilliant day, with great company well done everyone!! Thank you for the photos 📷 🐶🌟

We have one dog pup available from Grebes litter. Grebe is our Field Trial Award Winner FTAW Corbinsbere Ricochet and the sire is our home bred boy “Ruddy” Corbinsbere Steadfast. Both have great temperaments and are excellent working dogs. We are looking for a five star home, with the intention to work and ideally an interest in competing (whether working tests and/or field trials). KC Registered, Hereditary Clear AMS, FN and PRA, Docked, Microchipped, Wormed, 5 weeks free insurance.

These pups are our fourth generation Corbinsbere pups, really quite special to us and from my original line, no bi***es to continue with the line and Grebes last litter, so it’s down to these little fellas!

Please message me via pm or WhatsApp 07919474941 if interested 🥰🐶⭐️.

Thank you Tracy

A very proud day yesterday, organising Dorset Working Spaniel Clubs AV Spaniel Working Spring Test, my first event since taking on the role for DWSC. We were lucky to use fantastic spaniel ground on The Bradley Park Estate by kind permission of Lord and Lady Seymour. I certainly felt the pressure, there’s something quite different organising for a Club compared to the years of Working Tests for Corbinsbere Gundogs. I’m relieved the day was a success, thank you to the committee, my team of helpers,
the judges and of course competitors.

I’m immensely proud of ALL my clients who entered, you have worked hard to get to test standard and fought the nerves to have a go, I know you have the competition bug so I look forward to seeing you out there! Seeing many clients in the awards too was the icing on the cake for me!

Congratulations to my Puppy Class you all came away with an award - how proud am I!!!

4th - Ian Adamson - Corbinsbere Beatnik Billy
COM - Lindsey Corbin - Corbinsbere Scrumpy Jack
COM - Louisa Spearing - Caileanosla Happy Daze
COM - Steve Viveash - Corbinsbere Maison Sassy

Congratulations to those in Novice -

2nd Hollie Veryard - Summersbash D***y Dora (My Indie 😜)

Congratulations to those in Open

Wow what a result out of 48 entries 12 were clients of mine, 25 awards were given across all stakes and 11 were given to clients and 4 dogs were bred by us out of OFTAW Steltella Silver Pigeon.

Spaniel Working Test Workshop on Monday with both Novice and Puppy - I love these kind of training days introducing handlers to what’s expected and working on different aspects to achieve this. Good luck to those of you who are ready and are entering your first KC tests, remember to just enjoy the day, you’ll be fine! 😉🐶🌟

Mock KC Working Gundog Certificate Training morning at Corbinsbere Gundogs HQ in Wiltshire yesterday. A great morning achieving all the tasks, obedience, steadiness to multiple shot and marked dummies, hunting and picking up, retrieves over a fixed barrier and a retrieve from water - everyone did well staying focused around the livestock and guinea fowl - despite their very best efforts to cause distraction! 🐶🐦🐐🌟

Excellent work everyone! 🐶🌟

🐶⭐️ Saturday 18th May ⭐️🐶

We will be running the “Kennel Club Working Gundog Certificate” day on dummies.

Assessors Paddy Williams (A Panel Judge) and Me!

Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire

Please have a read of the link below and have a look at what’s required, dogs will need to be of this standard to participate on the day. You’ll see it’s open to all Gundog breeds, KC and non KC (non KC need to enrol on the KC Activities register).

I think this is a fantastic opportunity, to train to a high standard and obtain a recognised certification of the dogs ability as well as the handlers.

Please express an interest here, I currently have 6 places available for this assessment day. 😊

Grab a cuppa and have a read.. 😉🐶⭐️

About me…

When I say I grew up with dogs and animals I truly did, I come from a farming back ground so the countryside and animals are in my blood. The farm was everything to me, the early starts and rushing back from school to get changed to make good use of the daylight hours to be out with the animals and fresh air. It’s here where the seed was sewn, evening walks with my Father, shotgun and a spaniel knowing that rabbit would be on the menu. I knew from a young age I only ever wanted to work with animals leaving school at 16 to work in a veterinary practice - dealing with all kinds of animals. During this time, I owned my first dog a Spaniel x called Dylan, I got him from the RSPCA, a skinny pop bellied pup, who smiled! Our time together was short sadly, in the most heartbreaking way, but that story is for another day. I remember the paperwork I went through as it was requirement to be over 18 to adopt a dog, thankfully with a lot begging and the references from the Senior Partners at the vets swung it for me, oh my that feeling of going to collect him!!

In my early 20’s, with no dog by my side, it was time to move on with my second passion, Primates and this is where I learnt target and clicker training, taught by a Zoo Animal Behaviourist from San Diego Zoo. I spent many years working with Primates and other zoo animals from chipmunks to Chimpanzees, gaining a Btec Diploma in Zoo Animal Management. Although a privilege working in Primate Rescue and Zoos all over the UK, I love the countryside and my calling to return to my roots got the better of me. I basically missed having a dog by my side and the freedom I felt having one! I decided to rebrand, settle in Dorset and set up a small pet business and look after peoples dogs and all things animal. This helped with funding my Diploma in Countryside Management and Rural studies at Kingston Maurward College - which I passed with distinction. In this time I started my journey with a lab and cocker by my side, then a couple more cockers and my passion for Gundog training started to grow as a hobby for myself and was completely self taught, I couldn’t afford a trainer. I started training my dogs to work on a shoot for beating and spent time perfecting not chasing (unless asked) and picking up game. Working with animals of all kinds taught me so much about animal behaviour, how to work with difficult animals and train what you needed them to do, but most of all patience. Gundog training doesn’t come cheap and by now I had a secure job with The Centre of Ecology and Hydrology as a Freshwater Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist which tied in nicely with being outside in the countryside and allowed me to take my dogs to work! I still had this underlying desire to work with dogs and with the years of training my own to a good standard, I started training spaniel pups up to part trained and selling them on to fellow beaters, picker ups, rough shooters and gamekeepers. From this I started to help people train their dogs in the evenings and weekends, whilst I was still working at CEH, but having responsibilities of a mortgage I couldn’t just leave a secure position and start up as a Gundog trainer, that would be madness…wouldn’t it?

For years I continued building up clients, I also started competing and trying my hand at working tests - my biggest compliment was from Margaret Allen, although not a spaniel test and a non KC it was popular with the Retrievers, it was the shock and tone of her voice as she read out “and the winner is Tracy Corbin with a Cocker Spaniel!! The look of horror said it all! I think from then on I started to believe, I must be doing something right, Margaret then went on to ask who do I train with, to which I replied myself and she took the time to say very well done. In the scheme of things it wasn’t a huge competition, but for me it was like passing an important exam!

After 7 years at CEH, the news came that the government funded organisation was to downsize its sites which meant relocation or redundancy. I turned down relocation and instead took a generous redundancy package as I felt this was my chance, call it fate and an opportunity to turn my passion for Gundogs into a full time career. In 2009 I did just that, fast forward 15 years as a full time Gundog trainer and I haven’t looked back. I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved, gaining respect from other trainers, building a huge community of clients, training 100’s and 100’s of dogs, competing and placing in working tests and trials, being nominated and awarded Gundog Trainer of The Year, all of this whilst still staying grounded and remembering where it all started..quite a journey! It’s my journey and Im very proud of what I stand for, working within the animal industry for 34 years, with 25 of those training dogs.

You’re probably wondering what made me write this, I think it’s that time of year when existing clients have flown the nest and new clients ask the question when did I start training and why? Or because I’m on puppy duties, wide awake at 1am and it’s what you do, yes? I think both have contributed, however the main reason is I have just recently felt quite disheartened in this ever increasing “short cut” society and I find it hard when giving my all to clients there are those who haven’t finished training their own, go on to becoming “qualified dog trainers” after a 2 day course for £80 Inc Vat, it’s hard to believe but it’s true, there are courses out there for this!

A lifetime of knowledge is becoming less respected and experience counts for nothing unless you are accredited or qualified. (I understand there maybe a flip side, you could have all the experience and no idea, but your success as a trainer hopefully would reflect this!). This doesn’t mean I don’t believe in education, I absolutely do and throughout my time of working I have sought relevant qualifications. As I write this, I am making the decision of whether to do a Diploma Level 4 or Foundation Degree in Canine Welfare, Training and Behaviour.

For me it’s about the recent crazy trend of 2, 5, 7 day accredited courses or online subscription that leads you to becoming a Qualified Dog Trainer - but how does this give you all that you need? I certainly don’t have the answers for everything…

It truly is beyond me and becoming more acceptable, I read with interest a fellow trainers post and it really hit home, they have 35 years of successfully training dogs and they are about to sit an exam after 3 years studying Canine Behaviour and Training, with the quote “if you can’t beat them, join them”.

The biggest advice for those of you searching for the right trainer for you and your dog, whether it’s their qualifications, experience or reputation that you’re drawn to, always use your gut instinct if it feels right for you stick with it, if it doesn’t walk away. In these days of modern technology and social media it’s so easy to create an image of perfection when the true picture is anything but…do your homework dig deeper than someone’s profile.

Lastly although disheartening, it doesn’t stop me and putting it down on paper (albeit electronically) does put things in perspective, I’m still teaching and still loving it, yet understand why the more experienced are feeling exasperated at times. Thank goodness I’m back to work tomorrow, it could end up being a book at this rate…

That’s a lot of writing for someone who’s very practical, it’s time to take the dogs out….

28/01/2024

As the season closes, I look back on the year taking real pride in my chosen career as a Professional Gundog Trainer in the true sense of the title, training handlers and their dogs for the shooting field. Over the years I have introduced new enthusiasts to the sport in their numbers. This season without exception has been one of the most fruitful I have experienced, not only by my own achievements but for my clients too. All the while I was training for my own successes I was busy preparing clients and their dogs for the shooting field. Training dogs for the field is my true passion and it gives me a huge sense of joy watching novice handlers get out beating or picking up with their dogs for the first time. It takes time to get it right, many clients are with me from pup to fully trained, on average taking a couple of years to have a fully fledged Gundog. In this time I feel honoured to be part of their partnership, from the first retrieve of a puppy dummy to live game training days. This particular season has seen almost 30 clients achieve their goals of a working dog, with new spaniels in the beating line, retrievers out picking up and on peg and lastly three clients competing for the first time in Novice Spaniel Field Trials. I am immensely proud of these achievements, the majority of handlers I teach have never worked a dog or even been in a beating line and to see their dedication throughout is truly inspiring.

I wanted to take the time to say how much I’ve enjoyed teaching each and everyone of you, a big thank you to all the messages, the write ups and photos you have shared with me - there’s so many and apologies if I’ve missed a photo. You are all the reason why I do what I do and quite simply you are Corbinsbere Gundogs.

Thank you
Tracy
