Final day in Suffolk. Itโs been a busy 5 days.
By the time I head home this evening I will have
treated 13 horses and taught on a two day โEssentials of Soundnessโ camp with David Sanders and Sarah Williamson.
Itโs been great fun.
๐ฅ Everyone who attended the camp has gone home with a programme of rider exercises specific to each individual based on what was picked up during on horse as well as off horse assessments.
๐ฅ Everyone has gone home with gentle bodywork techniques that improve spinal stability in their horses.
๐ฅ Everyone has gone home with ridden exercises to improve their horse function, again specific to each horse.
Nothing on these camps is generic.
We are very much looking forward to the next one on the 28/29th October again in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk.
Comment โinterestedโ to be sent details of how to book.
This may not look like much. But for this big horse who likes nothing better than to push forward onto the forehand teaching him to engage his thoracic sling, ventral (underneath) muscular chain and take his centre of gravity back, flex his pelvis and stabilise himself has been no mean feat. I have taught him this with my body advancement and the whip as cues. I do not touch him With the whip. I have never touched him with the whip to achieve this. Also, for this big fairy having a whip turned upside down next to him has taken a little bit of getting used to!!. We have built trust and he now tries to take hold of that upturned whip ๐ ๐คก Teaching this horse gentle, careful, mindful cues and movements has been slow progress and hard going. He will always revert to pushing his way through me if he is feels the need. In those moments we quietly stop and regroup. Reset and go again. If an exercise upsets him we move to another and maybe come back to the original exercise later, or not. I never insist. I donโt need to control everything. I am happy for us to make mistakes, after all thatโs how we all learn. I am happy to change the plan, scrap the idea and try something else. Since starting this kind of work the pushy moments are getting less and less and he is finding far more balance, proprioceptive control and refinement in his ability to control and move his own body. While some owners cringe at their horses โthrowing shapesโ in the field I am delighted when this guy bucks, bounces, rears and can hold his own against the others. There was a time when he didnโt do any of those things. He is happier, more confident and more in control of his own movements. My next step is that from the backward shift I am now asking him to step forward without dropping the weight foreword. Itโs a work in progress ๐
