Once upon a time, this would have been a complete disaster for Prince and his training journey.
Dogs approaching Prince has always been an issue. Although, he’s super friendly on our pack walks and has many doggy friends. Strange dogs approaching, isn’t good.
Therefore, I avoid that happening to the best of my ability and only train around dogs in a controlled space. However, as much as we try, we can’t control everyone and sometimes, sh*t just happens.
I feel that getting panicked and shouting, moving quickly or even sometimes popping a lead on our dog, exasperates the situation massively. And I know for a fact, that if I did any of those things in this situation, Prince’s defensive side would’ve kicked in and the situation may have played out a whole lot differently.
I’m not going to be one of those people that bad mouth owners with out of control dogs. I know I can’t control everything and everyone but what I can control is what I do. I choose the place to train, I choose the tools I use and most importantly, I choose my reaction in these situations. Although, my reaction at first was a little panicked, I quickly read the dogs and realised that being calm was the way out.
Now I am not saying to do exactly this if a strange dog approaches yours. Every situation is different. However, I do advise you try and make conscious decisions and work out what would be best for you and your dog.

Little Olive’s humans came to me worried that Olive was regressing back to her old reactive ways. She had taken a few steps back in her training, and that’s absolutely fine. It happens to everyone. What we need to do is try to establish the reasons why she has regressed and adjust our day to day life to make changes. We thought, we’d use the end of our daycare day to work on a little bit of Socialising at @lartonlivery. Olive did so well and we’re super proud of her.
