Happy World Snake Day!!

World Snake Day, held every year on July 16, aims to increase awareness regarding the over 3,500 snake species that exist across the world. Yes, that’s a lot of snakes! And, guess what? Not all of them are as scary or venomous as we believe them to be. The fascinating reptiles are often not given the recognition they deserve just because of the bad reputation they have earned over the years. For instance, a friend who is a traitor is known as a ‘snake.’ The day aims to change the negative perception surrounding snakes and promote the love for all living beings — even the ones we fear.

The English word ‘snake’ comes from the Old English word ‘snaca.’ The reptile is thought to have come from terrestrial lizards that existed around 174.1 million to 163.5 million years ago. In fact, Eophis underwoodi, the oldest fossil snake, lived in England about 167 million years ago. However, even before researchers learned about the numerous snake species, the reptile was mentioned in ancient mythologies and was also an integral part of various religions. For instance, in the Bible Satan took on the form of a snake that existed in the Garden of Eden. And it is due to the snake that Eve consumed the forbidden apple and was banished.

According to Irish mythology, in the 5th century, St. Patrick went to a hill top where he fasted for 40 days. During this time, he was attacked by snakes. To protect himself, he waved his staff and expelled all the snakes of Ireland into the sea. This is why, even today, Ireland is devoid of snakes. In another legend, the Chinese believe there once was a white female snake demon who resided underwater. According to the ancient Chinese myth, the demon took on a mortal form when she fell in love with a human, and the two later married to give birth to a boy. The twist in the plot is that the demon’s identity was revealed by the Buddhist monk, Fahai. The monk then trapped the snake demon under his lakeside pagoda. Folklore such as these often show snakes in a negative light and may be responsible for portraying them as evil beings.

WHY WORLD SNAKE DAY IS IMPORTANT

It highlights how critical snakes are to the ecosystem

Like every other living creature on this planet, snakes are extremely important for the ecosystem. This means, without snakes, a negative chain reaction for the environment may be triggered.

It helps fix the image of snakes

Snakes are hated across the world since they are seen as creatures that kill. However, not all snakes are dangerous, neither do they deserve to be hated and slaughtered. This day promotes the rights of snakes and shows how we can all coexist in harmony.

It promotes the preservation of snake species

Numerous snake species are declining due to climate change and deforestation. Some species are killed for their skins to create fashion items. On this day, thousands of people make an effort to promote the preservation of endangered snakes.

**I've seen this post a few times recently, I totally agree with it. I will never forget bracken who taught me to cantre and I loved to ride him so much! I'm now getting to teach the next generation of riders freelancing at Patrington Equestrian Centre. Thanks you Julie Littlewood and Lana Whitelock for giving me the opportunity. It's great to watch young riders grow.**

They are never just RIDING SCHOOL PONIES❤️🐴

One day you may move onto bigger, fancier horses, but never forget the school horse who made you, as without them, you wouldn’t be able to ride anything at all.

The patient soul that tolerated your bouncing while you figured out how to sit the trot.

The kind mare that didn’t walk off when you stumbled up the mounting block, trying to get your foot in the stirrup.

The sweet gelding that picked up the trot even though your body was telling him to do the exact opposite.

The saintly angel that never spooked, which was a dam good thing because your balance was precarious at best.

Too often we forget where we came from. We move on to the next chapter in our lives and say, “Oh my gosh, I’m learning so much! I’m going so far! I could never do this kind of thing on that old school horse!”

But infact you could, you were just not ready to do all these things back then.

But that school horse gave you the confidence to move forward. That school horse took care of you in all respects and allowed you to take the time you needed to find your way. You couldn’t have become the rider you are today without that riding school horse, always remember to love them unconditionally for our riding school horses are what help start your dream, make dreams come true and get you ready for those bigger dreams 🐴

I had the pleasure of checking on these 2 beauties last night whilst their mum was out for the night. Litter done, snacks and lots of cuddles. 🐾 🐈. Pet sits starting from £8 for 30 mins.

Got some availability coming up on a Monday for dog walking/drop ins. £8 for 30 mins up to 3 dogs. £3 pre additional 15 mins with a loyalty system. Can take additional dogs for a small fee. I am great with a range of dogs, reactive, big, small, nervous and everything in between. Myself owning 2 Labradors and a border collie along with a lot more animals. I have plenty of references from happy clients. I also cater for lots of other animals from invertebrates to horses.

So today I took the afternoon off to take the dogs to the Withernse fun dog show. A fun time was had by all with Sabo getting best in show.

Well it's been a rather wet morning mucking out horses and walking dogs, all finished for today, at home and showered. Now I get to spend time with my guys getting warm on the sofa. Before going out this afternoon to celebrate my 3 wedding anniversary.

In between dog walks and horses I got to take sky to the groomers PawPrints Dog Grooming - Withernsea. A fantastic job as always, sky loves going to see her auntie Beccy and Tanya.

Today I walked the lovely Stevie (one of my regulars). I also got to walk his sister Cindy. Both have lovely new collars made by their owner Beccy. Stevie enjoys a good explore and sniffs the whole way round. Cindy was admiring the sea view with zoomies that I didn't catch in camera.

Had a Saturday off for a change. Went away last night with a good friend of mine and Sabo to get him used to crowds. We went to the Yorkshire game and country fair. It was fantastic some great comments from professionals about Sabos potential as a gun dog. Back to work tomorrow 😊❤️🐾.

5am get up for a 6am start, to get 6 horses mucked out at 2 different yards, farrier for my horses and another 5 mucked out. Was such a lovely start to the day meaning I get time to go home for a bit in the middle of my day to spend time with my dogs 😊. Back out this afternoon for more horses.

For the first time in 3 weeks I had a quiet day. I love being busy and seeing all the wonderful dogs and horses who are currently on my books. Today I got to spend extra time with my own dogs, sabo thoroughly enjoyed this especially a cuddle at the end of it all.

Had another lovely week, especially today with the weather getting better. Freelancing Patrington Equestrian Centre and getting to meet their lovely new pony Archie. A few dogs walks through the week and getting to enjoy my own dogs and horses 😁. I would also like to introduce you all to Princess, and yes she is as her name suggests. We have been working on rebacking her to build up her confidence. Thanks Julie Littlewood for allowing me the pleasure of working with her. These photos have been taken over the weeks I've been working with her.

What a busy weekend. Had a fantastic Saturday freelancing at Patrington Equestrian Centre. Dropping in on Diamond and Harley for cuddles and a walk. Sunday was more mucking out then a lovely walk with Blaze. Today started off very wet but still got 13 stables mucked out and 3 horses exercised.
