AUGUST BRAVEHEART AWARD🩵
We all fall in love with lovely Midas, this adorable cocker that managed to find and eat a sock a few weeks ago 🧦
This is not the first time that Midas does something like this (unfortunately our furry friends don’t learn from this things😓), and this time the sock was blocking his intestines. He was feeling very sick, flat and definitely not himself🤕
After necessary investigation, we had to go for surgery and remove the sock. At this point, the intestines were severely affected, so he needed a full abdomen lavage to make sure he didn’t have further infections.
Midas was very poorly when in hospital, and we were all very worried about him, until 3 days after the surgery were his waggy tail started to move again, and we were all very excited!🤩
He is now back home, happy and doing well, recovering after the intense surgery and recovery💪🏼
We would love to see you back Midas, but please don’t eat more socks!♥️♥️
Grass seeds everywhere!🌱🌿🍃
Is your dog or cat shaking their heads suddenly after being outside like Nala was doing?
We have removed a huge amount of grass seeds these last weeks. Luckily here at Wokingham, we have various scopes and are therefore able to check the inside of the nose and the ears to find those little grass seeds that track deeper than normal.
It’s very uncomfortable for them to have these inside, so when removed relief is instant!🤤
COMMON PARASITES IN THE UK‼️
It’s incredible how easy is for pets to pick up nasty parasites daily. These can have negative effects on our pets’s health (and ours too!).
That’s why is so important to ensure that your pet is fully protected against them🙅🏽
Some of the most common parasites in the UK are:
TICKS
Tick bites can pass on disease such as Lymes disease and cause allergic reactions and infections at the site of the bite.
FLEAS
Signs that your pet may be suffering from fleas include itching, scratching, areas of skin irritation or hair loss. You can also see flea dirt - tiny dark specks that look a little like grains of soil and go ref when wet.
They can affect dogs and cats all year round.
WORMS 🪱
In puppies and kittens an infestation of these parasites can be a serious health concern and may even be life threatening. Adult pets may carry worms with few symptoms beyond a dull coat, possible weight loss and lethargy.
There are several types of worms such as tapeworm, roundworm, heartworm, whipworm, hookworm and lungworm.
Lungworm is potentially deadly and is carried by foxes, snails and slugs.
In this video we can see what our vet Chris found attached to a dog in a routine appointment! The doggy was not up to date with tick treatment!
🔔FLEA/TICK/WORM REMINDERS - did you know you can simply forward your email reminder message straight to us, and we’ll have your treatments ready for you to collect after 2 working days 👍

Here’s Chris’s dog Lily being exceptionally good for a tick removal ❤️
We are very lucky to have an amazing team of nurses that support our patients when they are due to have blood tests, whether it’s calming the patient, preparing them for the blood sample to be taken or taking it themselves, our nurses make sure that comfort and care is prioritised🫶🏽🍀
Also, they assist while the veterinary surgeon performs abdominal scans or heart scans. Our cardiology team Adam and Donna are superheroes when they have cardiac patients to treat! ❤️🩺
Veterinary nurses also assist taking x-rays, which involves correctly positioning the patient, selecting the correct settings on the x-ray machine, developing the x-rays and evaluating their quality so the veterinary surgeon can interpret them accurately👨🏽⚕️👩🏼⚕️
APRIL BRAVEHEART AWARD💙
This beautiful black cat is Sooty, our vet David’s cat🐈⬛
He has been a real warrior these last couple of months after being diagnosed with diabetes but unable to controlled it despite huge amounts of insulin💉
David diagnosed him with acromegaly - which is a condition caused by excessive growth hormone, which made the diabetes very hard to control😩
He underwent a surgery at the Royal College which hopefully will make him achieve complete diabetes remission💪🏼
After a couple of weeks he's doing really well at home and enjoying hunting as usual!
You are amazing Sooty!🍀❤️
MILO 💛🐾🐶
Today’s bravest boy is Milo, he came to see us because he was having some gastrointestinal symptoms and stayed with us for several days while we were treating him accordingly. He went home after feeling better but after few weeks, his symptoms relapsed and started feeling poorly again, so we decided to run some extra tests💡
After obtaining the results, we found out Milo suffers from the uncommon disease called Addisons (Hypoadrenocorticism).
What is Addisons?🩺
Addisons disease occurs when the adrenal glands fail to produce two steroid hormones called cortisol and aldosterone. These steroids play a large role in regulating your dog’s internal organs and body systems. They are essential for life, and without them, the body starts to fail.
But with appropriate treatment, Milo can live an absolutely normal and long life with monthly injections and daily steroid tablets💊
Milo is now doing very well, although we have to continue checking his disease with regular blood tests, and of course his family at home are checking him daily, but he really feels like his normal self again!🍀
We love seeing Milo this way, running and wagging his tail. Every time that he comes to the practice he starts kissing everyone of the team, which is a lovely way of saying thank you❤️
We can’t he happier for you Milo, you’ve been a star!🌟
FLUFFY 🧡🐾🐱
Fluffy came to us as a stray, found on the streets by a lovely elderly gentleman who suspected she had been attacked by a dog and couldn’t use her back legs.
For a total of 7 weeks she stayed with us, and we have to give a big thank you to Thames Valley Animal Welfare (TVAW) for contributing towards her investigations and treatment, and also to 2 of our amazing nurses Bex and Emilie❤️Without them Fluffy would likely have not made it.
They practiced physiotherapy and hydrotherapy throughout all that time on Fluffy and all that work had amazing results, because Fluffy responded and started walking by herself!🐈
It was hard work, but we didn’t give up and we thought Fluffy deserved every opportunity🍀
Every little improve was a big step for us, and that positive attitude helped us to continue working hard💪🏼
Fluffy is now with a family that loves her and she is getting more and more beautiful every day❤️
Checking your cat for arthritis
Arthritis is a painful condition of one or more joints, secondary to inflammation and chronic trauma, and can be easily missed.
It’s vital we spot the subtle symptoms early on so we can help manage the condition in the long term. We can help reduce pain and extend a good quality of life for our pets, so please mention to us if you are seeing signs of arthritis.
