Congratulations to everyone who attended Spencers Wood Carnival dog show.
There could only be one winner per category but every single dog was beautifully behaved and our wonderful judge had a very tough time.
Thank you to Marshalls Pet food store for their donations.
We raised enough money to sponsor a Dogs Trust dog for a whole year.
More on that to come.

Looking forward to this afternoonā€™s dog show at Spencerā€™s Wood carnival in Clareā€™s Green Road, Spencerā€™s Wood.

Turning 50: A Moment of Reflection and Gratitude

Today, I celebrate turning 50, a milestone that feels both momentous and reflective. Itā€™s a time to embrace the love I have for my wonderful daughter and my four beloved Lurchers, who bring so much joy to my life.

This past year has been challenging, marked by the profound loss of my cousin Annie and my dear friend Barbara, both taken by cancer before they could see their 50th birthdays. Their absence is a stark reminder of how precious life is and how grateful I am for the health and presence of my family.

Our celebration was quiet but dignified, a moment to cherish the bonds we have and the journey weā€™ve walked together. Reaching this milestone has taught me that itā€™s okay to put myself first. After everything Iā€™ve been through, I no longer feel ashamed to say it. Itā€™s time to honour my needs and aspirations as I step into this new decade.

Hereā€™s to the next chapter, filled with love, gratitude, and self-discovery.

Most up to date advice for treating heatstroke in dogs

1. Cold-Water Immersion:
Research from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and other veterinary sources highlights that cold-water immersion is one of the most effective methods to rapidly reduce a dogā€™s core body temperature. Water temperatures ranging from 0.1Ā°C to 15Ā°C are effective, and the colder the water, the better it is for cooling. This method is supported by extensive studies and is recommended for young, healthy dogs

2.Evaporative Cooling:
For older dogs or those with underlying health conditions, using cool water combined with air movement from fans or air conditioning is recommended. This method helps enhance the cooling effect through evaporation, making it a safer alternative for dogs that might not tolerate full immersion

3.Immediate Action:
The principle of ā€œcool first, transport secondā€ is strongly emphasized. Immediate cooling should begin as soon as heatstroke is suspected, even before transporting the dog to a veterinary clinic. Rapid cooling helps to minimize the severity of heatstroke and improves the chances of survival

4. Avoid Ice Packs and Tepid Water:
Contrary to some outdated advice, using ice packs or tepid water is not recommended. Ice packs can cause vasoconstriction, which traps heat inside the body, and tepid water is less effective at reducing core body temperature quickly. The focus should be on using water cooler than the dogā€™s body temperature for maximum effectiveness

5. Continuous Monitoring and Care:
Even after initial cooling, it is crucial to monitor the dogā€™s temperature and overall condition. Continue cooling efforts and seek veterinary care immediately to address any complications such as dehydration, organ failure, or other heat-related issues .

By following these updated guidelines, you can ensure that you provide the best possible care for your dogs in the event of heatstroke, potentially saving their lives.

Pros and Cons of Crossing a Malinois with a Saluki

Pros:

1. Versatile Abilities: Combining the intelligence and work ethic of a Malinois with the speed and endurance of a Saluki can result in a highly versatile dog suitable for various tasks.
2. Enhanced Agility: Both breeds are known for their agility, making their cross potentially excellent for activities requiring nimbleness and quick reflexes.
3. Unique Appearance: The crossbreed can inherit a striking and unique appearance, combining the sleekness of a Saluki with the robust build of a Malinois.
4. Increased Stamina: A mix of Malinoisā€™ work drive and Salukiā€™s endurance can result in a dog with impressive stamina, ideal for active owners.
5. Health Diversity: Crossbreeds often benefit from hybrid vigour, potentially reducing the likelihood of breed-specific genetic issues.

Cons:

1. Training Challenges: Malinois and Salukis have different temperaments and training needs, making it challenging to find a consistent training approach that works well for both traits.
2. Energy Levels: Both breeds are high-energy, requiring significant physical and mental stimulation, which might be overwhelming for some owners.
3. Unpredictable Traits: The offspringā€™s characteristics can be unpredictable, making it difficult to know what to expect in terms of size, behaviour, and needs.
4. Dietary Needs: The crossbreed may inherit different dietary requirements from each parent, necessitating careful nutritional planning.
5. Potential Behavioural Issues: Malinois are known for their protective nature, while Salukis can be independent and aloof, leading to potential behavioural conflicts that need careful management.

Questions to Consider:

1. What is your primary goal for this crossbreed (e.g., work, companionship, sport)?
2. Do you have experience with high-energy and high-maintenance breeds?
3. Are you prepared for the extensive training and exercise needs this crossbreed might have?
4. How much space and time do you have to dedicate to a potentially very active dog?
5. Are you willing to invest in professional training and possibly behavioural consultations if needed?

These considerations will help you decide whether crossing a Malinois with a Saluki aligns with your goals and capabilities as a dog owner.

Creating better relationships for Life

We work with families to help you build a relationship with your pet dog. Our focus is on helping you as much as your dog grow in confidence and most importantly enjoy each otherā€™s companionship through having fun together.

We will work with you on a 121 basis within an environment that you would normally train or walk in - We do not train in village halls. We have nothing against training in halls and have used halls in the past, it has been a conscious decision to not use halls for the future though.

If you and some friends would like to train together - That is fine too - We will train up to 6 people and 6 dogs at one time.

If you want to train with multiple dogs we will assess your individual needs and then work out a programme suitable for you.
