Its dental hygiene month! We’ll be showcasing the importance of caring for your pets’ teeth, tooth brushing, diet and supplements and top tips for keeping those pearly whites healthy!

🦷Why is dental hygiene important?🦷
Just like with humans, plaque and tartar builds up around the teeth of our pets and can cause periodontal disease, gingivitis, and tooth decay.

Plaque harbours bacteria which can infect the gums and the roots of the teeth as well as entering the blood stream and potentially causing damage to organs such as the heart, liver, and kidney.

Good dental health promotes good general health, it’s a win-win!

Keep an eye out for our next post, where we'll be showing you how you can brush your little one's teeth!

Slimmer and pet of the month (August edition) ... Fletch 🐾

This gorgeous boy has lost a whopping 3.4kg on his weight loss journey and we are so proud of him!

Fletch attends a weight loss clinic regularly with our nurse, Laura, who is thrilled with his results.

By losing excess weight, Fletch is less at risk from developing cancer, breathing problems, back and joint pain, and heatstroke.

Well done, Fletch, we're all so proud of you! 💙💚

🌾 Grass seeds 🌾

Little Pablo learned first hand how painful grass seeds really are! After going for a run through a field, Pablo started sneezing and licking his nose; he'd picked up a seed in his nose. His pawrents brought him in as soon as possible and thankfully our incredible vet, Raluca, was able to remove the seed.

Grass seeds are found in areas with tall grass. They are small sharp heads that transfer easily and can get trapped in your dog's fur; because of their shape, they can burrow down into your dogs skin and can be very painful.
Grass seeds can be picked up by all dogs, but long haired dogs, such as Pablo, are at a higher risk of picking them up. Dogs usually get grass seeds stuck in their paws, ears, eyes, and nose but they can be found anywhere around the body.
What to look for:
🌾Licking constantly and vigorously, this can be around their paw, nose, or an affected area of skin
🌾Painful swellings around the toes
🌾Limping
🌾Shaking their head
🌾Pawing or rubbing their ear against surfaces
🌾Sudden, violent sneezes
🌾Discharge coming from their eye or nose

After every walk please check your dog's fur, paws, and ears for grass seeds and remove any you find before they reach the skin
Keeping long fur around ears and paws short will help reduce the risk that your dog will pick up grass seeds
Avoiding areas with long grass on walks will also reduce the risk of picking up grass seeds

If you think your little one had a grass seed, please call the practice as soon as possible!
