Really boring video. It won’t get many likes- but it may be helpful to someone wanting to improve their own dog and experience.
I love some of the gundog content on social media - it’s really entertaining and builds more of a following for country sports and especially gundogs.
It can look impressive with dogs skipping around a gun’s feet while they are on the peg, whirling around and marking everything down waiting to be sent for a runner, mid-drive….
….and if that’s what you want your dog to do - then great. My fear is that some won’t realise there are other ways to be impressive.
For me though, this is what is really impressive…
A gun with a calm dog on a lead walking out to his peg. The dog is settled in front of the peg and asked to sit there. The gun then calmly has one hell of a drive and shoots like a hero. All the while the dog is sat calmly - knowing that he will absolutely NOT be sent for anything during the drive.
Once the drive is over, the gun is made safe and put away, cartridge bag secured, and - if there are any birds left that haven’t been picked by a feral neighbour’s out of control dog - the gun goes out and picks the remaining birds, by hand himself. All the while his boring dog watches what is happening.
Hopefully your neighbour can now heroically carry back to the cart all of your birds along with his, as his wonderful gundog has created a stolen pile at his feet.
Then the gun walks over to the picker-up and asks if he picked the hen that landed across the deep dyke and into the plantation? When the picker-up says no, he can’t get his dog that far back and has probably run anyway, the gun politely asked if he may try for it?
Alone, and most likely while all the others are back chucking the sloegasms down the hatch, an incredibly memorable retrieve on a running bird is successfully made by the heroically boring dog without an audience. A special moment shared between a handler and dog that no one else needs kn
Dutch Trialling Dog
A nice Dutch dog marking across varied environments here.
Not easy, especially with the raised pressure of game - and the handler chose to step in… rightly or wrongly.
We’ve played around with trying to step-in and handle less over the latest season… I’m liking the results.
We suggested to these handlers to try to do the same over their time here…it went really well…realising that on many occasions you don’t need the stop, hunt or other noise/encouragement.
And it looks so much nicer…
Takes a bit of courage and I think pushes you to evolve your understanding of the dog and skills as a handler.
Anyone else been looking at this or have thoughts on it?
