CANINE BEHAVIOUR

An often misinterpreted canine behaviour is an exposed belly being seen as the dog wanting their tummy tickled. Whilst this is sometimes the case, you should be aware of what the whole dog is doing.

If they're wriggling around, with their back flat on the ground, then they're being playful, but if they're more on their side with a straight body, they're showing you that they are worried and they'd like you to give them space.

By learning to understand you dog's communications, you can build up a great relationship with them!

Did you know that dental disease affects up to 90% of dogs in the UK?

If it isn’t treated, it can lead to tooth loss, gum erosion and even more serious health issues like kidney or heart disease. The good news is that this is preventable with good dental care!

Plaque forms on a dog’s teeth every day… If it’s not removed, it can lead to gingivitis which is the first stage of periodontal disease. This can lead to pain and infection, and even tooth loss. The bacteria can also get into the dog’s bloodstream and cause more serious health issues.

At The Dog House, we introduce puppies coming in for their starter package to the toothbrush early on, but you can still bring your adult dogs in, even if they’ve not had their teeth cleaned before. We will complete a consultation visit first, just to ensure they don’t need a vet visit - in more serious cases, they need doing under sedation first. We can then continue with maintenance visits.

Signs that your dog needs their teeth cleaning include bad breath, bleeding gums, or a change in their eating habits. If they seem to be uncomfortable chewing or suddenly don’t like chew toys, this could be a cause for concern.

Teeth cleaning should take place regularly. Our routine appointments are just £25, and are completed with an ultra-sonic toothbrush and special doggy toothpaste. There is no noise, and no vibrations, and dogs generally take to the process well.
