I am delighted to announce that my canine companion Luna has also passed her Animal Assisted Interventions therapy dog assessment. Consequently, both of them will soon be assisting individuals in need.

Regarding the recent rumours, I am pleased to provide an update directly from the source.

I will continue with all dog walking, pet visit(s) and general training sessions, including puppy, dog, follow-on training, and one-on-one sessions.

However, I have discontinued behavioural consultations and reactive dog training, due to the physical demands involved. Additionally, I have suspended overnight house sitting as the unpredictable nature of the environment poses risks.

After several challenging situations involving stairs and a steep hill, which were not anticipated, I have concluded that house visits are no longer feasible.

While I will prioritise dog walking, dog ‘care’ visit(s) and Animal Assisted Interventions, I will continue to provide the majority of my services as I have for the past 16 years.

It is challenging for me to discontinue certain aspects of my work, but I recognise that my physical limitations prevent me from doing so effectively and fairly to clients and their dogs.

I have already secured a contract for Animal Assisted Interventions and thoroughly enjoy this new endeavour, as does Luna and Coal. I am hopeful that we will secure another contract in the future, ensuring our long-term success.

If you encounter individuals who assert that we are closing down, kindly correct them. While I have made certain adjustments to the business, as outlined above, it is accurate to say that I have discontinued some elements.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their unwavering support during this recent period. I eagerly anticipate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in this new chapter.

Additional evidence, if we were not already aware of it, suggests that early neutering of female dogs may have adverse health effects.

A recent study revealed that female dogs neutered before puberty had a significantly higher incidence of cruciate disease and were diagnosed with osteoarthritis at a younger age compared to those neutered after puberty.

Additionally, these early neutered dogs exhibited older age at the initial diagnoses of atopy and perivulvar dermatitis, and had a lower probability of remaining free from otitis externa.

Notably, no associations were identified between the pubertal status at neutering and the incidence of any urogenital diseases.

These findings imply that neutering before puberty may have detrimental effects on certain future musculoskeletal and immune diseases in female dogs of these crossbreeds.

As responsible pet owners, it is crucial that we remain informed about the latest scientific advancements, even if we are not permitted to provide health and veterinary advice. This knowledge is essential for making informed decisions about the well-being of our own dogs.

Current awareness and critical evaluation of the most recent scientific evidence are fundamental components of Teamwork Training Skills Support.

There are scant studies of associations between the pubertal status at neutering and subsequent health outcomes of female dogs. This study examined health data for Labrador and Golden Retriever crossbreed bi***es neutered by ovariohysterectomy either before (PrePN, n = 155) or after (PostPN, n = 151...

Socialisation for Puppies: Is More Exposure Always Better?

While increased socialisation may seem beneficial, it is not necessarily the sole determinant of a well-adjusted adult dog. Negative experiences, such as frightening encounters, can inadvertently predispose puppies to fearfulness or aggression later in life. Simply exposing puppies to a larger number of dogs does not guarantee their development into a secure and confident canine companion. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that puppies have a series of high-quality, positive experiences with other dogs. This can be achieved through selective socialisation, often best facilitated within the structured environment of a well-managed puppy class.

🐾 A Call for Change in Dog Training Culture 🐾

I've been reflecting on the current state of dog ownership and training, and it's concerning to see how many dog owners are becoming narcissistic due to a culture that prioritizes control and obedience over genuine relationships with our furry friends. While it’s important to recognize that owners are often victims of this environment, we must also take accountability and strive for change.

There’s a significant difference between positive reinforcement and authoritarian training methods. The latter can lead to abusive behaviors, normalizing punishment through tools like e-collars and prong collars, which is not what our dogs deserve.

Dr. Gregory Berns’ research emphasizes that dogs are sentient beings who deserve our respect and empathy, not just as tools for our validation. We must shift our perspective and treat our dogs as companions with feelings, rather than instruments for our own needs.

It's alarming to see how some trainers suggest behavioral euthanasia without proper assessment, reinforcing a troubling trend in our approach to dog training. The real issue lies in our perception and treatment of our dogs, not in the dogs themselves.

Let’s advocate for a kinder, more empathetic approach to dog ownership and training! Our dogs are not broken; it’s time we change how we see and treat them. 🐶❤️

What are your thoughts on this? Let’s discuss! ⬇️

Dogs generally pull about 60 per cent harder on a leash when wearing a padded harness compared with a collar, even when the equipment is marketed as “anti pull” – putting the people walking them at risk of injury.

Some dogs – especially smaller breeds – pull with a force more than twice their body weight on the collar, potentially damaging their throats, says Erin Perry at Southern Illinois University.

“It’s really very shocking,” she says. “The dogs are almost choking themselves on that collar repeatedly. But the harnesses in our study just didn’t inhibit pulling in any way, and that’s definitely a wake-up call – especially because of the risk to owners.”

Dog harnesses are sometimes claimed to reduce pulling forces on the leash, but an experiment found they have the opposite effect

🐾 Dogs are some of the most sociable creatures on the planet, just like us humans! But let’s be real—sometimes, I'm not the most social butterfly out there! 😂 If you drag me to events and introduce me with "Oh, this is my friend, say hi," I might just end up telling everyone to leave so I can chill with my dogs!

The same goes for our furry friends! Understanding your dog's social nature is key!

➡️ Some pups are super sociable and want to be friends with every dog they meet—even the ones that aren’t interested!
➡️ Others enjoy the company of most dogs.
➡️ While some prefer a select few that match their play style.

Regular playdates and off-leash interactions are vital for their happiness. Just like many people struggled during lockdown, dogs can feel isolated too, especially those who thrive on social connections.

And let’s not forget, just like humans, dogs have their own social preferences:
➡️ Some tolerate dogs but don’t necessarily enjoy their company.
➡️ Others have a small circle of dog friends or prefer humans over dogs altogether.
➡️ A few may even be dog-aggressive!

For puppies, socialization with various dogs off-leash is crucial. It helps them learn important skills and allows you to gauge their sociability. This insight is something I often highlight in aggression assessments, and owners find it incredibly useful!

So, where does your dog fall on my sociability scale? And how about you? 😆🐶

Feeling concerned about the misinformation circulating around dog behavior lately. It's alarming to see so many confident claims that are simply inaccurate. The language used to describe our furry friends and their motivations often misses the mark, leading people to believe in narratives that are far from the truth.

It breaks my heart to witness such misunderstanding about dogs, who often show a moral compass that far surpasses those perpetuating these myths.

For those of us who prioritize compassion, it's essential to remember that while the dog world continues to evolve with new insights, some people remain stuck in outdated beliefs. If you truly care for your dog, it doesn’t matter what misguided information you encounter; as long as it doesn’t conflict with your core values on how to treat and coexist with your pet, you’re already ahead.

Let’s spread compassion and understanding for our canine companions! 🐾❤️
