Pet theft awareness week!
In 2023 around 2290 dogs were stolen in the UK. This is equivalent to 6 dogs a day.
Expensive breeds are stolen in hope they can be bred from. BUT this does not mean they are the only ones at risk.
Every dog no matter the size, breed or age is vulnerable to these thieves. They are stolen to be used as bait in dogs fights, hunting, resale, used as guard dogs and of course to breed from.
Making sure your dog is safe is your responsibility as a owner. This means not leaving your dog unattended outside shops, making sure you can see your dog at all times when on a walk, and ensuring your garden fence is secure and gates are locked. Its also advisable to install CCTV around the house and garden.
Sometimes a dog is stolen by " theft by finding". This is when a dog is found and never returned.
On occasion, when a dog is found by a member of public the thieves will pretend to be the owner. Unknowingly the dog will be handed to them. This is another way a dog can be stolen.
The reality is that animals worldwide are exploited daily, and dogs are no exception. Its sad we have to live with a fear of our pet dogs and even cats being stolen, but being aware of the potential risks is key to keeping our pets safe.
Please don't be a statistic 🙏🏼 Keep your fur babies safe 🤎
