Hello and welcome to RHK9!

My name is Rachel and I’ve been a Veterinary Nurse since 2006. Wanting to refocus my career, I trained with the Canine Massage Therapy Centre on their 2-year Practitioner Programme, and have been running Clinical Massage Clinics from a vet practice in Ross on Wye since 2019.

I’m a proud member of the Canine Massage Therapy Centre tutor team, and a member of The Canine Massage Guild. I’m also a Licensed Workshop instructor, and run workshops for owners in ‘Beginners Guide to Massage’ and ‘Massage for the Sporting Dog’.

This page is dedicated to my daily life as a Clinical Massage Therapist and workshop Instructor.

We’ve had a bit of snow overnight but it’s pretty cold and dank out there now, as it’s drizzling and turning to slush.
There’s a venison stew simmering away and the fire is lit. I’ve decided to hibernate for the rest of the day, the dogs are more than happy as they’re tucking into some chunky beef tails that we picked up from
Hoping for a return of some drier weather soon 🤞🏻

Today was all about getting into the festive spirit, and collecting last minute Christmas treats. We booked a solo shop so that our little beauties could happily choose their own treats without the pressure of other dogs and people being around (we have 2 nervous little springers). Jess was wonderful and helped to guide us in our purchases, and they each even had a complimentary pupcup which they absolutely loved. We will definitely be back! If you haven’t already visited, make sure you pop in to say hi in the New Year 😊

How do veterinarians know Christmas is coming…? An increase in pet poison calls of course - and its usually chocolate or mince pie related!

With all the additional sweet treats and gifts around our homes it can be super tempting (and easy) for our pets to have a nibble (or a gobble) on something they shouldn't.

Here are a few common festive pet poisons we see; chocolate, grapes, raisins and certain nuts, garlic, onion & chives, alcohol, fatty foods, xylitol (sweetener) and cooked bones. Cooked bones are not a poison but they make this list because they hold a high risk if ingested. Cooked bones can splinter, causing trauma to the animals throat and or digestive system…they can also break teeth!

This little-legged legend came in for a clinical massage today. A few weeks ago he became lame in his right fore leg, and I found that he had an injury to his Superficial pectoral and Biceps muscles. Thankfully, he is no longer lame but the discomfort in these muscles remains. Hopefully after a few sessions he’ll be much improved.
Did you know that Canine Massage Guild member like myself are trained in remedial sports massage, which means we can help to rehabilitate strains and sprains?

Thanks for being such a superstar , I think you definitely deserve extra treatos tonight ☺️

What better way to avoid Storm Bert than to spend the day in the warm and dry with these wonderful souls and their humans.
It’s always a privilege to witness the special bond between dogs and their loved ones ☺️

The humans were taught all about the sub-clinical signs of pain in dogs, anatomy and physiology, how massage can help the whole body; including improving mobility and posture, and supporting orthopaedic conditions such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. At the end we put together all that they’d learnt so that they were able to deliver a 40-minute Swedish Massage routine on their dogs. I think the photos show just how much the dogs (and humans) enjoyed themselves 😊

This handsome boy is Sidney, a 3-year-old Dachshund who has regular clinical massage to help maintain good posture and improve comfort levels. Being a Dachshund, he is at more risk of developing spinal issues due to having a long back and short legs. Sid often gets a hunched, or roached back due to tight muscles, which can directly impact skeletal alignment.

Clinical massage helps to keep his muscles supple and comfortable, reducing his hunched posture, and therefore improving spinal alignment.

I will be offering free muscular health checks at Chaseview Vets on the following dates:

Muscular health checks are great for all dogs, but especially active or performance dogs, aging dogs, dogs that have been diagnosed with an orthopaedic issue, such as arthritis or hip/elbow dysplasia.
