I'm so lucky to work closely with Theresea and Paul at Mill Cottage Pet Crematorium in York and Clare at High Trees Pet Cremation in Selby. Both are small independent crematoriums that offer lovely bespoke services to pet owners.

Usually we organise for the crematorium to collect the pet shortly after the visit, but because we liase we can work to suit each pet owners preferences.

If you are worried about your pets health or welfare, would like to chat through the process or any questions please get in contact.

“Grief is so painfully real, regardless of its origin. The love of, and attachment to, an animal friend can equal that of human relationships. Likewise, the loss of an animal can be just as devastating.” – Rev. Joel L. Morgan.

How to know it’s time to let your beloved pet go to their final rest?

Deciding when it is the right time to let your beloved pet go to their final rest is a hard decision for all pet owners. Euthanasia is a kind act when a pet is suffering, but we have to remember our pets can’t tell us how they are feeling and if they are suffering or struggling. We have to read the signs and it can be really difficult.

There are a few questions I ask pet owners during an end of life discussion:
- Do the bad days tend to outweigh the good days recently?
- Are they doing the things they usually do - barking at the postman or following you from
room to room? Are they more clingy which is out of character for them?
- What is their appetite like? Appetite is a key indicator of quality of life in our pets. It will
often decrease and we may notice the our pets becoming “picky” as they feel more poorly.
- Do you feel their quality of life as good as it used to be, is it good enough?

Please remember that our cats, in particular, will hide pain, suffering and illness from their owners. We must be really careful to read these signs properly and make sure our pets do not suffer in the latter part of their life.

If you are unsure and would like some advice, please ring either your registered vets practice or myself. It can really help to talk these things through.

What happens during a home euthanasia visit?

We will discuss your pets recent health changes and ensure you are comfortable that the decision is right for your pet at this time.

A sedation will be given, usually by an injection into the muscle on their back. This ensures the process is as gentle and peaceful as possible as they are asleep for the remainder of the visit. The injection is a sharp scratch just like us having a vaccine, but it’s over before your pet knows it and should be the only thing they feel.

It usually takes around 5 to 10 minutes for a pet to drift into a heavy sedation and will look like they are sleeping. They won't feel any discomfort as an intra venous catheter is placed to deliver the final overdose of an anesthetic agent. It is just that - an anaesthetic- so your pet goes into an even deeper sleep before passing peacefully away.

Euthanasia really is a kind thing to do if a pet is struggling with an illness or injury that won't get better. Being able to offer this service at home ensures this difficult time is as easy and stress free for pet and owner.

Please get in touch if you have any questions about what happens during a home visit, I'm happy to talk this through with you.

Theresea and Paul do a great job at Mill Cottage Pet Crematorium. I work closely with them to provide a caring, personal service for pet owners at a most difficult time.

Mill Cottage offer only individual cremation so you can be sure you recieve only your pets ashes, as well as offering many memory options such as paw prints and hair clippings.
