Having had a trial couple of weeks of the bridge being closed, footfall is significantly down and deliveries are taking a fair bit longer due to big detours and traffic queues. Because of this and staff holidays we have decided to open to a limited timetable, closing around 1pm each day. The telephone should be diverted after this time (tech permitting) or you can order online a www.takealeafloristry.co.uk. Sorry for any inconvenience. We are looking forward to getting back to normal, however we will miss watching lorries, buses and caravans trying to turn round, but won't miss the fumes all the standing traffic causes! Thank you for your understanding 💐

Guide Dog Skills - Follow 🦮

The 'follow' cue is used if I want Rowley to follow a designated person, for example following a waitor to a table, following my boyfriend around the supermarket, or following passenger assistance staff around a train station.

This is useful if I don't know exactly where I'm going and can't give Rowley regular cues such as find left/right. It's also less mentally draining if I can just follow Rowley, who is following someone else!

I've also done this with another Guide Dog team. I knew the route, but they didn't, so their Guide Dog was cued to follow mine, quite literally the blind leading the blind, but it worked brilliantly! 😂

Alt Text: Guide Dog Rowley, a black Labrador, is guiding his handler around a supermarket. He is following someone in front who is pushing a trolly.

Today, I'm sharing my top three bewildering encounters with the general public as a Guide Dog owner. Here's number 2!

'The Good Samaritan'
Being 'helped' across a road that I wasn't planning to cross by someone hoping to 'do a good deed'.

This was such a strange encounter. A man asked if I needed any help, and I said no, thank you. Before I knew it, I was being taken across the road when I actually needed to go the other way!

Offering assistance is lovely, but please do respect our answer if we say no. Imagine how frightening it could be for someone with limited or no vision to be suddenly grabbed by a stranger and taken into the road.

If you missed number one, take a look back at our page to find it. I will be posting number 3 this evening!

If you are a Guide or Assistance Dog handler, please feel free to share your most bewildering public interactions in the comments.

Oh Ta**us, we love you so much! 🥺❤️

This big goofball is the true definition of don't judge a book by its cover 📚 He might not have his ears and he might be a big boy but Ta**us is one of the sweetest goofballs you will ever meet 💕

This sweet boy is such a clown when you become friends! He loves doing roly polys on the sofa playing fetch and going for his daily walkies!

If you enjoy the cuddly mastiff character and the joyful play of the more silly Rottweiler types, Ta**us may be the dog for you!! So what are you waiting for 🤪

We have been notified by the Veterinary Poisons Information Service and Animal PoisonLine that a poisonous plant is being used as decoration in a pot plant that can be purchased in garden centres and possibly florists.

The pot plant is Livistona rotundifolia (footstool palm; also known as Saribus rotundifolius) and pots of these plants are decorated with three fibrous balls. The balls are the skeletonised fruit of Cerbera odollam (su***de tree, pong-pong). Within each fruit is a kernel that is extremely toxic; a single kernel can be fatal if eaten and poses a risk to both pets and people. The toxic compounds in Cerbera odollam are cardiac glycosides, which are also found in foxglove, oleander, lily of the valley and other plants.

If you have these fibrous fruits in your pot plant, remove them and dispose of them safely. It you are worried your pet may have eaten the plant material contact Animal PoisonLine (01202 509 000)or the Birchwood team. 💚🤍
