Rabbit vrs Other Livestock
🐇Rabbits have a high reproductive rate
compared to other livestock.
🐇They become sexually mature within a few
months of birth and have relatively
short pregnancies.
🐇They produce large litters and are unique in that they can be rebred immediately after kindling (giving birth).
🐇With an intensive breeding program, a doe
can be expected to have 60 weaned young a year.
🐇Such intensive breeding is not recommended, however, for the beginner and is seldom used in commercial production.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Raising Rabbits in Colonies

Advantages

🐇 Rabbits are sociable animals so several rabbits living in a colony improves the health of the animals.
🐇 Relatively less maintenance work needed as rabbits can make their own tunnels and nest boxes and it is usually easier to clean over time, especially if a concrete floor is not used. Concrete floors require more cleaning.
🐇 Rabbits live in a more natural environment.
🐇 It is more humane way of raising rabbits.
🐇 Rabbits are better acclimatized to fluctuating temperatures when they burrow into the ground.

Disadvantages

🐇 Risk of diseases spreading quickly.
🐇 Difficult to monitor each rabbit for signs of illness and feeding.
🐇 Doe fighting.
🐇 Record keeping can be complicated, especially when the buck lives in the colony.
🐇 Predators could be a challenge as the rabbits live on the ground.

Bloat in Rabbits
Bloat is a common illness in rabbits and can be deadly. It is the biggest reason why food switches need to happen slowly and high fibre hay must be provided. Foods high in starch, like cabbage and potato, are a few of the causes of bloat because they feed the wrong bacteria in the rabbit's gut.

Symptoms of Bloat
1. Distended, firm tummy
2. Favouring front leg
3. Drooling
4. Laying down and listless
5. P**p stuck on the bottom

Rabbits have two different kinds of p**p, a hard pellet and a soft grape-like pellet. The soft kind is called a cecotrope and they eat these because they are made of proteins and fats that had to be fermented in the hindgut before re-consumed and absorbed. If you find these in their cage uneaten, their food may be too rich, especially if you have been giving treats like fruit.

Treatment of Bloat
1. Mix pineapple juice in rabbits water (¼ per gallon)
2. Take away pellet food and feed only hay for several days
3. Administer infant gas-x (simethicone) every few hours until the rabbit's tummy softens [rabbits cannot pass gas and the build-up from rich food can cause severe pain]
4. Provide a hot water bottle or heating pad for the rabbit to lay on if they choose [the pain of bloating can be eased with heat, allowing the intestines to move the illness out. Provide this warm spot until the rabbit gets up and moves around on their own]
5. Once the rabbit is moving again, promote more movement by placing hay feeders and water bottles up high.
6. Do not get in a hurry to put them back on pelleted food, wait until their tummy is very soft and empty. Start-out a little at a time, a few tablespoons on the first day, ¼ cup on the second day, etc.
7. Putting probiotics, like raw apple cider vinegar (1 tbs per gallon) in rabbit's water, helps promote healthy bacteria and prevent bloat.

Preventing diseases in your rabbit farm

1. Clean the hutches every day and keep them dry.
2. If you suspect disease, disinfect!
3. Keep animals away from their manure.
4. Isolate animals you suspect are ill so they do not infect healthy animals.
5. Do not let visitors get close to the cages.
6. Put a foot bath with disinfectant at the entrance of the farm.
7. Clean, fresh air in the cage is essential. A strong manure smell is not good. If you cannot stand the smell, the rabbits probably cannot
either.

Routine check of your rabbit for early disease detection:

🐰 Check nose, eyelids, ear edges for mange (little crusts), and inside the ear for ear mite.
🐰 Check the manure. Is it dry or somewhat pasty?
🐰 Feel the stomach, to check that it is not spongy. This requires some practice.
🐰 Check nose and front legs. Certain coughs produce a kind of coryza, which makes the front legs dirty.
🐰 Check for smell in the hutch.
☘Diarrhoea/enteritis often causes an unpleasant smell.
☘When the doe is lactating she is under stress and more liable to suffer an attack from intestinal germs (which are always present), such as coccidiosis.
☘Sometimes the nest box will therefore need cleaning.

Measures to prevent diseases on your farm:

1. Avoid buying your animals at the marketplace where many unknown germs come together.
2. Buy from respected breeders, or farmers with clean housing and healthy-looking animals.
3. Inspect the animals in any case, and after bringing them home or to the farm keep them
separated from your other animals (in quarantine) for at least two weeks.
