Our 911 Comittment

I woke up mid morning, struggling to wrap my mind around the TV images of a plane repeatedly flying into a skyscraper...I had been sleeping through the morning after working the graveyard shift, with the TV on when my cousin Karl called to tell me America was under attack! That was sure to wake anybody up wherever you were, never mind that I sat there about 120 miles or 2 hours away from ground zero, slowly adjusting to my new sense of vulnerability. As we spoke, a second plane flew into the next tower.

As if that wasn’t enough, another plane soon flew into the Pentagon, another 117 miles - roughly 2 hours in the opposite direction - away. Mind you, I was supposed to be moving to my new place, which was merely 30 minutes away from the Pentagon in exactly one week, and oh, I had almost moved in with my cousin Kwame who lived some 20 minutes away from ground zero!

After my initial shock, I set about calling my cousin and a handful of people I knew who worked in the World Trade Center buildings to ascertain that they were among the survivors, but alas, phone lines were clogged for another 72 hours or so, and it was literally impossible to get through.

So I’m glued to the TV, half-waiting for more attacks, the vice president is in a bunker, the president in indefinitely airborne, the phone is on redial one moment, receiving calls from panicked friends and family the next, and it just hit me in the gut! After the initial calamitous wave of first responders, they had brought in the search and rescue dogs with more dogs and handlers showing up to volunteer from all across the country, and that is how they were saving lives. It is reported that over 100 dogs ranging from the guide dogs that led their owners down over 70 flights of stairs to safety, the search and rescue (SAR) dogs, bomb sniffing dogs worked flat out till the last survivor was found 27 hours after the towers fell, by Trakr, a German Shepherd Dog.

These dogs were bred and trained to ignore loud noises, work through personal adversity and push for the goal like their life depended on it. I knew about breeding, as a matter of fact, I knew more about breeding than any of my peers in Ghana, where I had successfully bred outstanding Dobermanns from about 1990 till I shipped out in 2001. Practically every puppy I had bred was bought primarily for security (mostly domestic, but a few for commercial/professional security). To be quite frank, I considered my last-but-one litter before I headed out, to be my most successful because at 6 weeks they had all aced the personality tests and exhibited outstanding boldness. They were the 3rd generation of my breeding plan and I was extremely proud of them. I had however noted that a couple of them were borderline vicious even in play mode. Since it had been my aim to breed more aggression into my lines, I kept the two most outstanding puppies, Ziggy and Ky-Mani (that was my Marley litter). I had kept them both because I wasn’t sure which of them was the most outstanding, but I was forced to make a choice when they were about 6 months old, because they were increasingly drawing blood in play fights, so I sold Ky-Mani off to a repeat buyer who had just lost his 9 year old dog from my first litter.

But as I sat glued to the TV on 911 gathering my thoughts, praying for the lives of my young cousin and friends, and examining my life, I prayed to God to spare their lives. I made a silent commitment to God to never breed one more merely ferocious, snarling ball of fury when I could dedicate my time and energy to breeding dogs that offered a whole lot more service to mankind. My cousin Kwame’s office went down in the attack, but as he explains, the plane flew right over the office he was having a meeting in inside the next building before slamming right into approximately where his office was located.

Over the next 15 years, I researched bloodlines, dog breeds, dog training and canine welfare in general. In that period, dog breeding changed significantly. Inspired by the need to eliminate incidents of pet dog attacks and mauling, responsible breeders sought to produce a dog that is absolutely capable of protection, but is intelligent enough to discern friend from foe. Even police working dogs, switch to pet mode when off duty…some of the military attack dogs remain exactly that, highly driven lethal weapons.
