Welcome to 2024, welcome to Corfu winter, where autumn pairs with spring = beautiful spiders, bright mushrooms, thick beards and socks and....true love!!
Yes - if we see Simba (the brown boy) being close to her ladyship Shakira, even if she is approaching him, it means she has the heats for him and he can munch happily on. Normally the Simbim would not even dream to stay so close to Shakira, she could lash out and he would rather stay well away. But here - love is in the air!!

LATE SUMMER

After August 15 (Assumption of the Holy Virgin = THE most important feast-day in Greece) the mornings and evenings will get cooler again, is what they say here. Well okay, but HOW far after this 15th of August? Already for 4 months (from the start of May) it’s bone-dry and from June on hot , from July and August really hot, day and night... There are also bushfires left, right and center - most of the time because of arson – so my planned outing to Naoussa I have postponed until after the first rains: I get super nervous of all these smoke clouds with my darling horses in their fields of dried hay.
But the clients came anyway, also in this first year of my company and after seven o’clock in the evening we could have a good ride out in the lesser heat of the night.

Now (start of September) finally it indeed feels like AFTER that 15th of August, it’s really cool in the morning and this weekend we will expect the first rains! Wow! In my fields the mediterranean grasses are waiting with their tiny heads right under the surface for a bit of dew to stick out their baby sprouts. Come on September! Autumn is like a second springtime here and a perfect time voor nice rides!

The old Simba clearly had enough of all that apathetic sheltering in the shade and runs jovially over the stubbles of a mowed field. He races so aslope through the bends that I nearly fall off, also while he concludes his canter with a big buck! Don’t count him out yet!

We went for a fast ride all around with Zina and Shakira and I may conclude – nothing wrong with their stamina.

With Shiva I started doing some basic dressage again on the mowed field and she loves it. I sit on her and wonder how easy everything is for her, even after a long hot summer of doing nothing of this kind. She seems to tell me – you like this? Want some more? And with that super-concentrated canter of her she’s also the champion in doing road-bends the fast way.

The after-summer period has begun, my horses shake the sweat out of their coats and suck in the cool breeze through their nostrils. It’s nice to ride out now – will you join us?

NAZOMEREN

Na 15 augustus (Maria-hemelvaart = DE belangrijkste feestdag in GR) worden de ochtend- en avonden weer koeler, zo zegt men hier. Maar ja, HOE ver na die 15e augustus? Het is al vanaf mei kurkdroog en vanaf juni aardig warm tot in juli en augustus bloedheet, dag en nacht... Het brandt ook weer links en rechts – meestal aangestoken – dus mijn geplande uitje naar Naoussa heb ik maar uitgesteld tot na de eerste regens: ik wordt supernerveus met al dat gefik en mijn paardjes in weides vol droog gras.
Maar de klanten kwamen ook, dit eerste echte jaar dat mijn bedrijfje is gestart, ondanks de hitte en zeker na 7 uur s’avonds was een buitenrit goed te doen.

Nu is het dan inderdaad NA 15 augustus, het is zelfs frisjes ’s morgens en we verwachten dit weekend de eerste buien! Wow! In de wei zit het mediterrane gras kennelijk ook te springen hun kopjes boven de grond te steken, want al een beetje dauw maakt dat ik al... kleine sprietjes zie. Kom maar op September! De herfst hier is een tweede lente en een perfecte tijd voor mooie buitenritten!

De oude Simba heeft duidelijk genoeg gehad van dat apatische geschuil in de schaduw en rent er gemoedelijk op los over de stoppels van een gemaaide wei. Hij racet zó schuin door de bocht dat ik er bijna afval, zeker wanneer hij de galop combineert met een flinke bok: laat de oude heer maar schuiven!

We hebben een lekker snel rondje gemaakt met Zina en Shakira en ik mag concluderen – hun uithoudingsvermogen is nog prima.

Met Shiva ben ik weer begonnen met wat basis-dressuur op het gemaaide veldje en ze heeft er zin in. Ik zit erop en verbaas me hoe makkelijk alles voor haar is, terwijl we toch een hele hete zomer niks gedaan hebben. Aangeboren aanleg?
Met die heerlijk gecontroleerde galop van haar is ze in ieder geval ook ideaal voor een bochtig galoppad!

Het nazomeren is begonnen, mijn paardjes schudden het zweet uit hun dekharen en zu**en de koele bries door hun neusgaten = lekker weer op pad, wie rijdt er mee?
