I am feeling very proud to have taught these 2 amazing women for the last 3 days. Olga and Mallory travelled from Thessaloniki to do a 3 day course on a range of different dogs practicing their preparation skills, use of Top Dog Natural Pet Products, scissor skills and shaping. I think the photos show clearly what wonderful work they created in those 3 days.
Both of you not only have a talent for grooming, but so much passion towards grooming as an art form and love for animals. Greece has a bright future in dog grooming and animal welfare with ladies like you both in the industry, I look forward to seeing you both again in the new year.❤

This is the reason I teach. I really put my all into my students as I want you all to learn as much as possible from me. Whatever I learn I will pass on, I have mentors also who I continue to learn with. This is very important for me that I keep learning new things.
I believe that knowledge is for sharing. I don't believe that I'm in competition with others, especially when our job is based on the love of animals and passion for art, sculpture in particular. We as groomers are creatives, though our work also moves, breathes and feels.

When I first started grooming in Greece I saw that it was still a fairly new concept and over the last few years it has become increasingly popular, which I can only see as a positive thing.

I hope that in the future, grooming dogs to a high standard, and with compassion for their feelings, will become part of every day dog ownership for Greece.
Taking care of pets coat is more than beauty, it is for dogs well being. Dogs who get groomed and handled regularly are mentally and physically better off than dogs who go without.

I see a bright future for the groomers of Greece, with knowledge shared we can all win together, educate the general public better and the overall biggest benefactors of that will be the reason we do this job in the first place - the dogs.

Let's talk neck and belly restraints!

Groomers use restraints while grooming your dog to keep your dog safe from injury and also to keep themselves safe. There are a wide number of different options available, from groomers helpers, to hammocks that the dog can be suspended in, but today I want to talk about the most common used in almost all salons. Neck and belly straps.
Groomers use neck straps in the bath and on the grooming table to stop the dog jumping out of the bath/off the table and hurting themselves, even potentially breaking their legs on landing. Or landing on us and injuring us! We use belly straps on the table to prevent injury caused by falling and hanging from the neck and injury from spinning and causing asphyxiation. Belly straps also help the dog to stand in the middle of the table and stand up for us whilst we work, helping reduce the possibility of an accident with clippers or scissors.
Restraints must be used correctly though to ensure pet safety.
Recently I have been seeing a lot of photos of incorrect use of neck and belly straps, so I wanted to write this to educate on the dangers of misuse of these restraints.

NECK STRAPS.
Neck straps should be fitted under the jaw behind the ears. They should be able to be unclipped easily from bath or table incase of emergency where you need to release the dog quickly. There are many with pinch clasps that make it easy for you to unclip a dog fast when you need to or one's that have a clip in the middle so that you can release a dog instantly.
They should not be so loose that the dog can reach over the edge of the table. They should not be so tight that the dog is standing unnaturally or strung up that they restrict breathing. I cannot say this enough, a neck strap SHOULD NEVER restrict or prevent a dog from breathing.

THEY SHOULD ONLY BE USED ON DOGS.
Neck straps should NEVER be used on cats or small animals eg rabbits, guinea pigs. Cats and other small animals do not have the neck strength dogs have and one jump can result in a broken neck and death.

BELLY STRAPS.
Belly straps should be wider than a neck strap so that they are comfortable on a dogs belly if they lean on it. Again used on dogs only.
You can also buy belly straps that have padding. They are great for older dogs or dogs who lean on the belly strap as it is more comfortable.
A belly strap should be fitted around the dogs waist, under the belly and should fit so that the dog can stand naturally. You should be able to get 2 fingers into it comfortably. It should not be tight and lifting the dog upwards, dog should not be able to swing in it. Damage can be done to a dogs stomach, insides, hips and back with incorrect use of a belly strap.
NECK STRAPS ARE NOT BELLY STRAPS. I see a lot of photos of thin neck straps used around dogs bellys. This is very uncomfortable for a dog and can result in injury to the dogs internal organs from pressure.
There are lots of belly straps available to buy, I recommend eirher the ones with D rings and removable padding or ones that have quick release clasps for extra safety. I have both in my salon and use them depending on which dog I groom. I find the quick release great for big dogs that I know I cannot lift up easily in an emergency.
Safety and comfort is key to producing a good groom and also taking good care of our beloved clients.
