貓狗為什麼要吃益生菌?

益生菌是什麼？
維基百科對益生菌的定義是：
益生菌Probiotics，源於希臘語「for life」— 對生命有益，指吃下去後對宿主（如動物或人類）有正面效益的“食入性微生物”。
根據美國紐澤西NorthStar VETS獸醫師Dr. Karah Burns DeMarle的解釋，犬貓有約70%的免疫細胞分布在消化道，而益生菌是『活的微生物』，吃下肚後能增加腸道中『好菌』的數量。

貓狗為什麼要吃益生菌?
一般健康的貓狗能自然地保持消化道微生物的平衡。但受到飲食，藥物（尤其是抗生素）和環境(換季、壓力)等因素可能會失衡，引發各種問題包括消化不良，食慾下降、嘔吐、口臭或大便改變 (便秘、軟便、拉肚子、腹瀉、腸胃炎) 等症狀。根據《默克獸醫手冊》（Merck Veterinary Manual），使用益生菌是一種有效的營養補給。《英國戴維斯獸醫專家》表示益生菌有益於維持犬貓的身體機能。2009年愛爾蘭研究也指出，為犬貓補充雙歧桿菌(Bifidobacterium animalis)減少了約10％的抗生素治療需求。
