7 cats find their new life in the UK!
Having successfully brought 11 cats & kittens from Dubrovnik to the UK in December 2018, it was time to do it again! This trip, however, was fraught with problems almost immediately as the rented campervan broke down twice, we had to return for a new one, and lost a week.
Arriving finally in Dubrovnik, we found many misunderstandings on trip preparation, mostly due to vet inexperience, and cultural difference/lack of funds. We ran around getting passports completed, FIV/FELV tests done (all negative :-)) and first vaccines done. The UK association SOS Dubrovnik Cats were super in supporting us with some tests and flea/worming treatments. Rather annoyingly, several cats are in need of eye surgery, which would have been a quarter of the price in Croatia. But the prevailing view of most vets there was that it was just aesthetics, no surgery needed. On seeing them, we realised many were in unnecessary pain or discomfort. But there was no time left. The blind dog meant to travel with us, also lost his forever home, and was going to stay in the dog shelter. And 2 further cats were too ill/wild/ unready to travel, so it was with just 7 cats that we hurriedly set off on the 2,140 kilometres back to the UK.
On the way, we visited an eye specialist in Zadar, who felt most of the eye infections were due to herpes virus - a fact that then lost us 3 forever homes or fosters. By that time, we were in southern Germany and not enough time to return and get it all sorted cheaply in Croatia, for a return trip....
All 7 cats are settled in the UK - 2 in forever homes, 1 at Pudz Sanctuary for special needs animals, and 4 still in foster. This past month has given us time to get vaccines properly sorted, and diagnoses and quotes for treatment/surgeries needed.
