Echo has been off her food for the past couple of days… today is the third day that she’s refused to eat (which is VERY unusual/worrying for her) and she just seems “off”. 😔

So we took her to the veterinary clinic for a full checkup… the ultrasound scan shows that it isn’t pyometra, and we also did a complete blood panel test and urine test. The results are definitely concerning (potentially pancreatitis or a possible tick borne disease, among other things) so she is getting additional testing and an intravenous infusion while we wait for the results. Hopefully we’ll have some more news soon but, in the meantime, we’re hoping for the best… 🤞

hmmm very true!

Deep within Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave in France, archaeologists discovered the footprints of an 8-to-10-year-old child preserved in ancient mud, dating back an astonishing 26,000 years. Alongside these human prints were the paw marks of what experts believe to be either a large dog or a wolf, making this the oldest known evidence of a human-canine relationship.
The cave, known for its breathtaking Ice Age artwork, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of early humans, suggesting that even in the harsh Upper Paleolithic era, bonds between humans and animals may have already begun forming.

This discovery challenges previous assumptions that human domestication of dogs only began around 15,000 years ago. While it is unclear whether the animal accompanying the child was a domesticated dog or a friendly wolf, the mere presence of their tracks side by side hints at early human-animal interaction. If indeed a dog, this would push back the timeline of canine domestication by thousands of years, showing that early humans may have relied on these animals for companionship, protection, or hunting assistance long before recorded history. The footprints serve as a silent but powerful testament to a bond that would eventually shape human civilization.

Let's change the culture around inbreeding in purebred dogs!

The average Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) across all purebred dog breeds has risen above 25% (Dreger et al. 2016). For reference, a COI value of 25% is what you get when you breed two siblings together.

How did inbreeding levels get this high? Most breeders are not performing full-sibling matings. However, inbreeding is cumulative, which means that many generations of breeding less-closely related individuals can still result in puppies that are equally as in**ed as if their parents were siblings.

Inbreeding can have a profoundly negative impact on a dog’s health and longevity (see my last couple of posts for more details). However, very few breeders are making the COI values of their dogs public. Puppy buyers are commonly advised to ask about health testing when picking a breeder, but inbreeding is rarely, if ever, mentioned. Meanwhile, standard health testing does not protect dogs from the majority of inbreeding-related health defects.

When consumer demand changes, the culture around breeding will change in response. If you are looking to purchase a puppy, ask the breeder about the litter’s Coefficient of Inbreeding. Not all breeders are currently performing genetic COI testing, but advancing technology has made these tests more accessible than ever. When breeders see that the public cares about the results of these tests, they will start doing them.

Unfortunately, many people in the purebred community, including well-known reputable breeders, still believe that inbreeding is safe, despite numerous studies showing otherwise. Since this issue is rarely talked about, breeders are able to continue to produce in**ed dogs behind closed doors, and the people who purchase these dogs are none the wiser. If consumers are able to know the Inbreeding Coefficient of the puppy they are considering buying, this will allow them to make informed choices, and to decide how much risk they are comfortable taking on.

When asking your breeder about COI, note that some breeders still estimate COI from pedigrees. This calculation is now considered outdated, as it can significantly underestimate inbreeding levels (in some cases, genetic COI is 10x greater than the pedigree estimate!). Let your breeder know that Embark’s Breeder Kit includes a genetic COI test, meaning they don’t even need to pay extra if they use this company for genetic health screening.

Ask your breeder about inbreeding today – when breeders realize that this is something that people care about, they will change. You can be the first step in creating healthier and happier lives for purebred dogs everywhere!

Sorry for the lack of updates lately! 🙈

We’ve been pretty busy behind-the-scenes and I haven’t been uploading much as far as photos / videos… but things are always in motion (more so, when we don’t even have time to keep up with social media). 😅

That being said, I am starting to catch up with the backlog of admin work, website / forum updates, and emails / messages… it is quite a lot to tackle, but I’m making progress little by little. ☺️

In the meantime, since we decided to retire Layla from breeding, she was recently spayed. Here are some photos from the veterinary clinic on the day of her sterilisation surgery (she is now fully recovered and doing well). 🥰🐺
