Our scientist Ana Mikelić, PhD, recently attended the 10th Regional Biophysics Conference (RBC2024) and 15th International Summer School of Biophysics, held from August 26 – 30, 2024 at the University of Split School of Medicine, Split, Croatia. These events were jointly organized by Croatian Biophysical Society and University of Split School of Medicine. She presented a poster entitled „Quantum Chemical Docking of Quinuclidine-Based Carbamates Within the Active Site of Butyrylcholinesterase“ and actively participated in workshops held as part of the summer school.

The event offered a stimulating program of lectures, poster sessions and workshops covering a wide range of biophysical topics and methods: molecular biophysics; biointerfaces and bioinspired materials; membranes and membrane proteins: structure, function, dynamics; biophysics of viruses; neurobiophysics; cell biophysics and nanomechanics; drug delivery; advanced imaging and spectroscopic techniques; computational methods and machine learning.

Magda Kamber, an expert associate in the Laboratory for Diagnostics of Classical Swine Fever, Molecular Virology and Genetics and a collaborator of the Croatian One Health Project (CROOH) under monitoring and support by EFSA One Health surveillance subgroup, was selected by EFSA as a sponsored participant for the training course "Surveillance of mosquito and sand fly vector species, with a focus on pathogen detection”. The training took place from the 26th to the 29th of August in Schengen, Luxembourg and was organized by VectorNet, an ECDC and EFSA project whose database contains information on the European distribution of various mosquito, tick, sand fly and biting midge species that can be vectors of pathogens affecting human and animal health. West Nile virus has become endemic in Europe and beyond in recent decades and there is a risk of Rift Valley fever virus being introduced and occurring in the region as the responsible vectors are widespread in most EU countries. So the main topics of the training were introduction in biology, surveillance and methodology of identification of mosquito and sand fly vector species, as well as the principles and methods for detection of RVF, WN and Leishmania in vectors in order to help improve preparedness and response to vector-borne diseases.

Our scientist, Valentina Kunić, dr.med.vet. recently had the privilege of attending the 28th International Bioinformatics, Virus Evolution & Molecular Epidemiology (VEME) workshop in Brasília, Brazil. Hosted by Fiocruz, Brasília, the program provided an in-depth understanding of both practical and theoretical concepts in bioinformatics and various virus genome data analyses. A poster presentation included research work titled "Interspecies transmission of bovine G10 Rotavirus A strains between cattle, wild canids and humans https://lnkd.in/dTx_3-Y5" conducted at Hrvatski veterinarski institut - Croatian Veterinary Institute within the scope of the project, funded by Hrvatska zaklada za znanost (Croatian Science Foundation) to whom we hereby thank for their support. Naša znanstvenica dr sc Manuela Zadravec aktivno je sudjelovala na 12. Međunarodnom mikološkom kongresu, održanom u Maastrichtu u Nizozemskoj s poster prezentacijom „Comparison of fungi contamination and mycobiota diversity in maize and wheat as two different nutritionally valuable cereals“ te je ujedno promovirala NPOO projekt „Biološka raznolikost plijesni i pojavnost fuzarijskih mikotoksina te njihovih metabolita u najznačajnijim žitaricama uzgojenim u Republici Hrvatskoj“.

Congratulations to our colleagues on the publication of their paper entitled: Direct Determination of Glyphosate and Its Metabolites in Foods of Animal Origin by Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry Glyphosate is the most used herbicide in agriculture. Its major metabolite is AMPA (aminomethylphosphonic acid), but N-acetyl-AMPA and N-acetylglyphosate are also metabolites of interest. In this paper, we present a method for the quantitative determination of glyphosate residues and its metabolites AMPA, N-acetyl-AMPA and N-acetyl-glyphosate by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in adipose tissue, liver, eggs, milk and honey without derivatization. The proposed analytical procedures were validated according to SANTE/11312/2021 guidelines: linearity, limits of quantification, precision and accuracy were determined for all matrices. Good validation parameters according to the SANTE document were achieved for all analytes. Therefore, the method can be considered reliable and sensitive enough for routine monitoring of polar pesticides. The application of the accredited method in routine analysis will provide data that are useful for the re-evaluation of risk assessment studies in foods of animal origin.

Our colleague and colleagues from 14 European countries and Canada published the paper: Survey among European and Canadian feed control units on monitoring packaging material residues in feed by microscopy analyses.

Packaging material can harm animals or disturb their feed intake, pollute the environment, and are considered as undesired impurities in feeds. These materials do not consist of a definite molecule, group of molecules, living species or definite bodies. They can be plastic foil, hard plastic, metal pieces, paper, wood or some combination of materials. Their features (sharp, pointed) can be as important as the material itself. This is a typical topic for microscopy detection and evaluation. This short review presents the work done on the detection of PM in 15 monitoring entities (institutes, laboratories). Since 2011, some institutes have analysed more than 20 samples each year and the incidence of non-compliant samples will be presented here. Thirteen out of 15 entities have active monitoring, whereas others have passive surveillance (done while performing other microscopy analyses). The protocols used by the different entities depend on sample types and analysts, highlighting a need for harmonisation.

Uvodni sastanak i prezentacija projekta MARINET

U četvrtak, 11. srpnja 2024 održan je virtualno održan tehnički uvodni sastanak projekta MARINET - MARIculture NETwork: Implementation of new technologies for diversified sustainable aquaculture targeting a healthy society and competitive region, dok je je 13. svibnja 2024. na Fakultetu za menadžment u turizmu i ugostiteljstvu u Opatiji održan je uvodni sastanak s javnim predstavljanjem projekta. Ovaj europski projekt , financiran iz programa Interreg Italija – Hrvatska 2021.-2027., fokusiran je na inovacije u uzgoju ribe i školjkaša u Jadranskom moru kako bi se poboljšala biosigurnost, ekološka održivost i gospodarstvo uključenih zemalja.

U predstavljanju projekta u Opatiji, prisutne je u uvodnom dijelu programa pozdravila Jelka Pleadin, pomoćnica ravnateljice Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta. Tijekom predstavljanja projekta, dr. sc. Snježana Zrnčić, voditeljica radnog paketa 1 predstavila je zadatke planirane u sklopu ovog projektnog zadatka: Improvement of biosecurity and sustainability of Adriatic mariculture. Sastanak je bio odlično popraćen u medijima. Virtualni tehnički uvodni sastanak je definirao zadatke i uputio sudionike o načinu administriranja implementacije projekta.

Projekt MARINET trajat će 30 mjeseci, od 1. ožujka 2024. do 30. kolovoza 2026., s proračunom od 1.871.881,46 €, sufinanciran iz Europskog fonda za regionalni razvoj Europske unije s 1.497.505,16 €. Projekt je medijski vrlo dobro popraćen.

Potpisan sporazum o suradnji između Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta i Sveučilišta u Mostaru

U srijedu, 3. srpnja 2024. godine, u Vijećnici Medicinskog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Mostaru, potpisan je sporazum o suradnji između Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta iz Zagreba i tri sastavnice Sveučilišta u Mostaru: Medicinskog fakulteta, Agronomskog i prehrambeno-tehnološkog fakulteta te Fakulteta zdravstvenih studija.

Sporazum su u ime Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta potpisali ravnateljica dr. sc. Andrea Humski, a u ime Sveučilišta u Mostaru dekani prof. dr. sc. Ivan Ćavar, prof. dr. sc. Ivan Ostojić i prof. dr. sc. Vajdana Tomić.

Uz ravnateljicu dr. sc. Humski, prisutni su bili i prof. dr. sc. Jelka Pleadin, pomoćnica ravnateljice za znanost, dr. sc. Gordan Kompes, pomoćnik ravnateljice za poslovanje, te dr. sc. Silvio Špičić, član Upravnog vijeća Instituta. Predstavnici Sveučilišta u Mostaru bili su prof. dr. sc. Vajdana Tomić, prof. dr. sc. Ivan Ćavar, prof. dr. sc. Ivan Ostojić i prof. dr. sc. Danijela Petrović.

Potpisnice sporazuma izrazile su podršku daljnjoj međusobnoj suradnji s ciljem napretka u obrazovanju, znanosti i struci iz područja biomedicinskih, biotehničkih i prirodnih znanosti. Sporazumom se predviđa suradnja na zajedničkim istraživanjima u kojima će, sukladno uzajamnim interesima, biti angažirani znanstvenici, prostori i oprema svih institucija. Planirano je i zajedničko sudjelovanje na europskim i drugim međunarodnim znanstvenim i stručnim projektima, te organizacija konferencija, simpozija, seminara, pozivnih predavanja i drugih stručnih skupova.

Cilj ovog sporazuma je poticanje i uzajamno podupiranje suradnje koja će unaprijediti obrazovanje, znanost i stručnost u spomenutim područjima. Suradnja će obuhvatiti zajednička istraživanja, sudjelovanje na europskim i međunarodnim projektima, realizaciju nastavnih aktivnosti i cjeloživotnog obrazovanja, te pripremu i izradu znanstvenih i stručnih publikacija. Također će se surađivati na izradi diplomskih, završnih i doktorskih radova, organizaciji tečajeva, konferencija, seminara i gostujućih predavanja, te razmjeni znanstvenih i stručnih publikacija i materijala. Suradnja će uključivati i provedbu ugovora s privredom, iniciranje i donošenje mišljenja o zakonskim propisima, te razmjenu informacija i zajednički rad prema domaćim i međunarodnim tijelima.

Croatian Veterinary Institute (CVI) participated in organisation and work of the workshop “Biosecurity in Mediterranean Fish Farming” held in Cesenatico, Italy, on June 26, 2024.

HVI je sudjelovao u organizaciji i radu radionice održane prošli tjedan u organizaciji Talijanskog udruženja ihtiopatologa i članova sredozemnih ogranaka Europskog udruženja ihtiopatologa. Snježana Zrnčić, na dužnosti potpredsjednice Europskog udruženja ihtiopatologa je blisko surađivala u kreiranju sadržaja skupa, a prezentirala je rezultate rada Laboratorija za bolesti akvatičnih životinja predavanjem „Biosecurity in Mediterranean Fish Farming“. U jednodnevnoj radionici su održana dva uvodna predavanja o načinima implementacije biosigurnosti u akvakulturi kroz model FAO-a i inovativni model koji se razvija kroz EU projekt Cure4Aqua te obrađene brojne aktualne teme biosigurnosti. U radionici je sudjelovalo oko stotinu sudionika iz Italije, Hrvatske, Španjolske, Francuske, Izraela i Tunisa, ali i predstavnik EURL za virusne bolesti riba iz Danske.

CVI participated in organizing and conducting the workshop held last week by the Italian Association of Ichthyopathologists and members of the Mediterranean branches of the European Association of Ichthyopathologists. Snježana Zrnčić, serving as Vice President of the European Association of Ichthyopathologists, closely collaborated in creating the content of the event and presented the results of the Laboratory for Aquatic Animal Diseases with a lecture titled "Biosecurity in Mediterranean Fish Farming." The one-day workshop featured two keynote lectures on the implementation of biosecurity in aquaculture through the FAO model and an innovative model being developed through the EU project Cure4Aqua, as well as numerous current topics on biosecurity. About one hundred participants from Italy, Croatia, Spain, France, Israel, and Tunisia attended the workshop, along with a representative from the EURL for Fish Diseases in Denmark.

Znanstvenici s Hrvatski veterinarski institut (dr sc Ivana Varenina, dr sc Marija Sedak, dr sc Maja Đokić, dr sc Nina Bilandžić i dr sc Damir Pavliček) i Veterinarski fakultet Sveučilišta u Zagrebu u Zagrebu (prof dr sc Ivana Tlak Gajger) održali su 10. lipnja 2024. godine skup s članovima Pčelarskog društva Varaždin i Agacija - Udruga pčelara Međimurske županije u multimedijskoj dvorani Tehnološko-inovacijski centar Međimurje u Čakovcu. Sastanak je organiziran u sklopu diseminacije rezultata istraživanja dobivenih putem dvogodišnjeg projekta (2023.-2024.) pod naslovom "Utvrđivanje prisutnosti i kvantifikacija ksenobiotika u pčeli i pčelinjim proizvodima”, financiranog od strane Agencije za plaćanja u poljoprivredi, ribarstvu i ruralnom razvoju (APPRRR).

Uzorci pčela, fermentirane peludi, meda u saću i vrcanog meda prikupljeni su u lipnju 2023.g. u suradnji s pčelarima Varaždinske i Međimurske županije, područja intenzivne poljoprivredne proizvodnje i najveće incidencije pomora pčela u Republici Hrvatskoj u proteklih nekoliko godina, te su provedene analize na ostatke pesticida, metala i antibiotika u svim vrstama uzoraka odnosno utvrđivanje prisustva i kvantifikacija spora Vairimorpha (Nosema) spp. u uzorcima pčela.

Na sastanku je prisustvovalo više od 50 sudionika, a ovom prilikom prezentirani su i aktualni COST (CA22105 BeSafeBeeHoney) i B-THENET projekti u okviru znanstveno-istraživačke inicijative Europske unije (Horizon Europe), na kojima su naši znanstvenici iznimno aktivni, s ciljem promicanja znanja o važnosti zaštite zdravlja pčela i očuvanja sigurnosti pčelinjih proizvoda.

Congratulations to our colleagues and their collaborators on publishing a paper “Sensory and Nutritional Characterization of Six Different Types of Croatian Traditional Meat Product: Characterization of Croatian Traditional Meat Products“.
The paper provides a detailed overview of the quality parameters of traditional meat products (TMP) by analyzing the sensory and nutritional properties, including physicochemical characteristics, fatty acid profile, mineral and amino acid content. A total of 242 TMPs were analyzed, which were divided into 6 groups (Kulen/Kulenova seka, dry fermented sausages, prosciutto/smoked ham, Pečenica/Ombolo/Kare/Zarebnjak and bacon/pancetta). The studies have shown that TMP are nutritionally high-quality meat products with a high protein content, well-balanced amino acid profile and a high content of biogenic minerals. In addition, statistically significant differences were found in the observed physico-chemical properties, amino and fatty acid and mineral composition and sensory properties, which can be attributed to the different conditions, production processes and recipes of the family farms. The study was funded by the Croatian Science Foundation trought the project " Mycotoxins in traditional Croatian meat products: molecular identi6cation of mycotoxin-producing moulds and consumer exposure assessment" and by the Croatian Veterinary Institute with funds from the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia.

Naš znanstvenik, voditelj laboratorija za parazitologiju dr.sc. Relja Beck za Agroklub je podijelio najnovije podatke o stanju lisičje ehinokokoze na području Republike Hrvatske.

Echinococcus multilocularis je trakavica koju u crijevima nose lisice i jajima parazita kontaminiraju okoliš i hranu. Nakon unosa jaja u čovjeku se razvijaju ciste urastaju u tkivo jetre i uzrokuju alveolarnu ehinokokozu koja ukoliko se ne liječi uzrokuje smrt pacijenata stoga danas predstavlja najopasniju parazitarnu zoonozu prenosivu hranom u Europi i Hrvatskoj.

4th International Scientific and Professional Conference FOOD INDUSTRY BYPRODUCTS

Hrvatski veterinarski institut je bio suorganizator i aktivni sudionik 4. međunarodno znanstveno-stručnog skup FOOD INDUSTRY BYPRODUCTS koji se održao u Osijeku, od 6.-7. lipnja 2024. godine. Predstavio je vlastita istraživanja i aktivnosti iz znanstveno-istraživačkog projekta. Profesorica dr.sc. Jelka Pleadin bila je moderator sekcije plenarnih i pozvanih predavanja te koautor predstavljenih istraživanja. Dr.sc. Tanja Bogdanović predstavila je aktivnosti NPOO projekta ˝PLASTICshell˝ pod naslovom ˝How Microplastic as Ubiquitous Pollutant Might Affect the Global Food Production Chain˝. Dr.sc. Kristina Kvrgić je predavanjem predstavila istraživanje ˝The Potential of Bivalve Shells as Valuable Aquaculture By-Product˝, kolegice dr.sc. Nina Kudumija i dr.sc. Irena Perković su posterskim priopćenjem predstavile istraživanje ˝Eggshell – bio-waste as a significant source of minerals˝ i ˝Safety and Sensory Properties of Cooked Sausages with the Addition of Moist Brewer´s Spent Grain˝.

Dana 3. lipnja 2024. u Hrvatskom veterinarskom institutu u Zagrebu potpisan je sporazum između Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta i javne ustanove Aquatika - Slatkovodni akvarij Karlovac.

Sporazumne strane iskazale su interes za suradnju na svim područjima od zajedničkog interesa, a osobito u području kontrole zdravlja, preventive i suzbijanja bolesti akvatičnih životinja, analiza i optimalizacije uvjeta držanja akvatičnih životinja te na drugim poslovima za koje utvrde zajednički interes.

Suradnja sporazumnih strana ostvarivat će se putem izrade znanstvenih i stručnih studija i analiza, pripreme i provedbe projekata financiranih iz EU fondova, održavanja znanstvenih i stručnih predavanja, razmjene znanstvenih i stručnih spoznaja te organizacije skupova.

U organizaciji Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta, Podružnice Centar za peradarstvo uspješno je održan 15. znanstveno-stručni Simpozij ”Peradarski dani 2024.” s međunarodnim sudjelovanjem od 22. do 25. svibnja 2024. godine u Puli pod visokim pokroviteljstvom Ministarstva poljoprivrede, šumarstva i ribarstva i Ministarstva znanosti, obrazovanja i mladih Republike Hrvatske te pokroviteljstvom World's Poultry Science Association i World Veterinary Poultry Association. Ove godine okupilo se 270 sudionika iz 19 zemalja iz znanstvene zajednice, te proizvođača peradi i industrije koja prati ovu proizvodnju. Kroz dva dana održano je 35 usmenih i poster prezentacija iz područja bolesti, hranidbe i tehnologije u peradarskoj proizvodnji, ekologije, dobrobit i veterinarskoj praksi u peradarskoj proizvodnji, kvaliteti i sigurnosti peradarskih proizvoda, genetici, ekonomiji i marketingu, te slobodne teme.

The 15th Scientific and Professional Symposium Poultry Days 2024 took place in P**a from May 22 to 25, 2024 under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth of the Republic of Croatia, as well as under the auspices of the World's Poultry Science Association and the World Veterinary Poultry Association. This year, 270 participants from 19 countries came together from the scientific community as well as from the poultry industry and poultry production-related sectors. Over two days, 35 presentations and posters were given on the topics of diseases, nutrition and technology in poultry production, ecology, animal welfare and veterinary practise in poultry production, quality and safety of poultry products, genetics, economics and marketing as well as free topics.

Lecture about In situ methods in research

Croatian Veterinary Institute hosted a lecture by Dinko Novosel on Wednesday, 15 May, the Ph.D. entitled "In situ method in scientific research". The methods of immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridisation and in situ PCR for the detection of specific molecules in histological sections, collectively referred to as molecular pathology, were discussed. All of these methods are used in the research work of the HVI, and the aim was to introduce young scientists to their technical implementation, the evaluation of the results and their application in research. The aim is, of course, to increase the quality of the translated research of young scientists with advanced diagnostic tools.

Congratulations to our colleagues and their collaborators on the publication of their paper entitled „Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Milk and Dairy Products in Croatia: A Health Risk Assessment“.

The aim of this study was to evaluate contamination levels and the frequency of detection of pesticides (OPPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (seven PCB congeners) in a cow’s, sheep’s and goat’s milk and dairy products from Croatia. No concentrations exceeded the maximal residue levels defined by the legistation of European Union. Pesticides were quantified in 27% of samples, and seven PCBs were quantified in 5.23% of samples. Among the three pesticide groups, the highest numbers of quantified results were found for organochlorine pesticides (12.1–20.8%). The sum of seven PCBs was quantified within the range of 3.3–6.67%. Based on the estimated daily intakes, chronic risk characterisation showed no risk for adults or ten-year-old children for the consumption of cow’s milk and dairy products.

Congratulations to our colleagues and their collaborators on publishing a paper “Distribution of Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Food of Animal Origin in Croatia“.

Pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental pollutants. When entering the food chain, they can represent a public health problem due to their negative effects on health. In this study, concentrations of pesticides and PCBs (73 compounds) were determined in a total of 2268 samples of fat tissues, meat, and processed meat products collected in Croatia during an 8-year period. Organochlorine pesticides were quantified in the highest percentages; hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) in fat samples and DDE in meat and meat products. An evaluation of the health risk assessment showed that the consumption of fat, meat, and meat products does not pose a threat to consumer health.

U sklopu projektne nastave za darovitu djecu Panda, Udruge Bioteka, dr. sc. Manuela Zadravec je održala radionicu „Kosti u hrani za goveda? Ludilo!“ na kojoj su djeca tražila kosti sisavaca, riba i ptica u hrani za preživače. To su sastojci koji pokazuju prisutnost mesno-koštanog brašna koje se ne smije nalaziti u hrani za preživače zbog mogućnosti prisustva priona uzročnika spongiformnih encefalopatija te uzrokovati tzv. kravlje ludilo.

I. Konferencija o Marikulturi

Hrvatski veterinarski institut je bio suorganizator i aktivni sudionik I. Konferencije o marikulturi koja se održala u Zadru, 08.04.2024. Predstavio je vlastita istraživanja i aktivnosti iz dvaju projekata. Dr.sc. Ivana Giovanna Zupičić je predstavila aktivnosti Interreg Italija Hrvatska projekta u predavanju s naslovom „Primjena umjetne inteligencije u upravljanju zdravljem u marikulturi“ dok je dr.sc. Sandra Petričević predstavila aktivnosti NPOO projekta „PLASTICshell“ pod naslovom „Identifikacija i kvantifikacija mikroplastike u akvakulturi“.

📻 Tema jutrošnje emisije U mreži prvog Hrvatskoga radija bila je afrička svinjska kuga.
O samoj bolesti govorila je izv. prof. dr. sc. Lorena Jemeršić, predstojnica Odjela za virologiju Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta.

🎥 Film "Periske - Jeste li ih vidjeli?" koji govori o projektu „Očuvanje plemenite periske (Pinna Nobilis) u Jadranskom moru“, prikazan je na Neum Underwater Film Festivalu.

S važnošću projekta sudionike festivala upoznali su članovi istraživačkog tima Hrvatskog veterinarskog instituta.

Projekt koordinira Ministarstvo gospodarstva i održivog razvoja, a sufinancira Fond za zaštitu okoliša i energetsku učinkovitost.

Hrvatski film o borbi za očuvanje plemenitih periski za oko je zapeo mnogobrojnim zaljubljenicima u podvodni film te predstavnicima medija. O njemu je bilo riječi i na Radioteleviziji Bosne i Hercegovine.
