🆘 What You Need to Know About Handling a Pet Emergency 🆘

🐾 Emergencies can be stressful for both you and your furry friend. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you stay calm and take action if your pet faces an emergency situation. 🐶❤️

Step 1: Stay Calm
Take deep breaths and stay as composed as possible.

Step 2: Assess the Situation
Quickly evaluate the severity of the situation. Is your pet conscious? Are they breathing normally? Look for visible injuries or signs of distress.

Step 3: Contact Your Vet/Emergency Vet Clinic
Have your vet’s number saved in your phone. If it’s after hours, contact the emergency number. If your vet doesn't have out of hours emergency number, contact the closest hospital. For East Meath it's Summerhill Veterinary Specialists: 046 9557551

Step 4: Provide Basic First Aid
For Bleeding: Apply pressure with a clean cloth to control bleeding.
For Choking: Carefully open their mouth to check for and remove any visible blockages. If they're still choking, perform the Heimlich maneuver for dogs.
For Poisoning: Do not induce vomiting. Call your vet immediately and provide details of the substance ingested.

Step 5: Transport Your Pet Safely
Use a pet carrier or a blanket as a makeshift stretcher to move your pet without causing further injury. Keep them warm and secure during transport.

Step 6: Follow Professional Advice
Once at the vet, follow all instructions given by the professionals. They’ll guide you on the necessary treatments and care required.

Step 7: Prepare for Future Emergencies
Create a pet first aid kit with essentials like gauze, bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers. Take a pet first aid course if possible.

Hi! I thought I do an introduction post so you can get to know me a little better! I'm Siobhán, your local dog walker and pet sitter! So how did I get here? I was working in a corporate job until last year. Nice company, nice team, nice perks, but I knew it wasn't for me.
After some (years!!!) thought and deliberation I made the leap and quit. I went back to school to do animal care at DIFE. Passed with flying colours and now building the dream of working with animals.

I'd love to get to know more of you and your pets! If you're new, welcome, come follow me on my adventure in to the pet care world.

If you've been following for a while, this is your sign to get in touch and book a walk or a meet and greet 🦮🐈🐾🤎🌞

You may have seen the good news recently that Bettystown got awarded a Blue Flag status. As part of this dogs will not be permitted in the blue flag area between 11am and 7pm, daily in July and August and weekends in June and September. As far as I understand you can still walk your dog outside the blue flag area, at Mornington beach, Laytown beach and in the dunes.

Here's a peek at 5 things that make my dogs tail wag. What are your dogs favourite things?
1. Belly rubs. He loves a good old tummy scratch
2. Vegetables. Bit unusual but he loves any veg with a crunch. Carrots and Peppers especially
3. Beach walks. Walkies are naturally a favourite but he loves running up and down the dunes, smelling horse hoof prints, and finding lost balls🏝
4. Naps. Top class napper and he has several spots he enjoy. From the upstairs windows, to the back garden decking🐾
5. New toys. Most of his toys he will lose interest in after a while, but every new toy is the Best toy ever, for a few hours anyway 😆

Need a helping hand with your dogs daily exercise routine, or does your pet need a visit while you are out for the day? Let Sullys help! Get in touch to book, let's keep those tails wagging 🦮☀️🐾

3 Things I learned about letting the dog lead the way. I tried this with some of my doggos last week. Apart from the start and end of the walk when I guided them towards the beach/car I let them decide our route. This is what I found:
• Walks won't vary that much from what you do normally, especially if your dog knows the area
• You'll cover the same distance/steps but in a smaller area i.e You'll zig zag alot, be prepared for some back and forth
• Its quite fun!

Have you tried it?

Paws and reflect. 3 quieter walking tails for you and your dog. The beach is a great resource on our doorstep but as the days gets longer and warmer it can get busy. Maybe you have a reactive dog and don't want to meet a lot of dogs on your walk or maybe you just want a bit of head space
1. Mornington tower to the end of crook road. Its about 2km one way. You can walk along the river or the road. If you are avoiding dogs don't walk through the caravan park and stick to the river path as you'll have more space. I like to walk out along the river, and back on the road.
2. Townley hall. This is used a lot by families and dog owners using the trails but I find it much quieter if you go in to the trees on the right of the main car park. You may still meet other dog walkers but you are not confined to one trail.
3. Laytown carpark to gormanstown. Again you can walk along the beach or the road. I like to go out the beach and back along the road. It is a quiet road, but you may still encounter cars so be mindful of that!

What other walks would you add to the list?

Going away this summer? Why not choose house visits over kennels or cattery? Some of the benefits:
Personalised care - individual attention based on your pets needs
Less stress - pets get to remain in their own enviornment
Reassurance - regular updates as well as knowing your pets are happy at home
Convenience - no need to pack up toys, beds, food etc
Home security - the added bonus of having someone call to the house, take in post/bins etc

I didnt know rapeseed was toxic for dogs, did you? 😲

I didnt know rapeseed was toxic for dogs, did you? 😲

❌ RAPESEED! ❌

It’s that time of year again where farmers fields have blossomed into pretty yellow flowers, these plants are called rapeseed. Although it may be tempting to place your dog in the midst to take a scenic photo, please avoid this at all costs!

Rapeseed is extremely poisonous for dogs, especially in highly sensitive canines.

Rapeseed is listed by Dogs Trust as toxic to our dogs if ingested and can cause symptoms such as:

❌Haemolytic Anaemia
❌ Blindness
❌ Damaged Nervous System
❌ Digestive Disorders
❌ Breathing Problems

Even walking through these fields should be avoided! In June 2019, a dog was reported to be suffering from severe open wounds after running through a crop of rapeseed.

Please seek immediate veterinary attention if your dog shows any signs of rapeseed poisoning!

Dog walking essentials

○ SPF - yes every day, yes even in Ireland, yes even in Winter ❄️

○ Wet gear- I keep it in the car, because you never know! It is Ireland after all 🌧

○ Poo bags - I bring a pouch with me with a roll of poo bags and a spare roll. I also keep back up rolls in the car. Plus there are rogue single bags in at least one pocket of all my jackets. Dog owners will know that feeling!! 💩💩
