A true Legend of Irish Showjumping has passed away today but leaves behind a legacy of knowledge and horsemanship in those that were lucky enough to have had the opportunity to either compete with or train with Captain Con who was always willing to give advise and encourage aspiring riders and horsemen and women. The showjumping world will miss him and we offer his family and friends the support they will need in the coming days and weeks.

A true gentleman dedicated to the sport of show jumping was how friends in SJI describe him. For many, Paddy Mullen was the person to be credited with changing the face of amateur show jumping in Ireland.

His SJI colleagues believe that he along with Ado Kenny and a dedicated group of friends, developed amateur showjumping in a progressive way while always kept the sporting element there .It allowed this category to be open to all levels of riders. Paddy was always keen to bring in new blood to develop the sport.
Without a doubt, Paddy loved the atmosphere around the amateurs and was often the last to leave the party or show. The well-known Dingo's A class, which he sponsored for over 30 years has been a foundation of Amateur Showjumping. Paddy was also the instigator of the Amateur Awards which he supported and enjoyed for so many years.

Paddy knew so many people in all walks of life from all over Ireland and had a great memory for names and places."
During his time as chair of the amateur committee, Paddy was instrumental in getting the amateurs a place at the Dublin Horse Show and also for the sponsorship of the classes.

It was due to the success and interest of Toni, Brian, Stephen and Pat in the pony and horse ranks in the show jumping arena that gave Paddy the interest in the SJAI and subsequently amateurs.
Paddy was always keen to develop a category whereby people who worked full-time could compete on a level playing field at weekends. He was a regular face doing the starters' board, where he thrived meeting people and sharing a good joke, but at the same time kept the board moving

He was a staunch supporter of the Midland Cub Hunters League, run by Brian and Anne Gormley, Ado Kenny, and friends. For numerous years, Paddy, Noreen and his family were the organisers behind the two-day horse and pony jumping held at Oldcastle Agricultural Show. This led to the inspiration behind the well-known Dingo's Amateur Final.

Paddy's idea of bringing in new blood to help develop the sport was always evident and he was ever helpful and generous with assistance or advice to those new to the sport or new to the SJAI committees.

The work which Paddy did in show jumping can never be understated. He was one of the longest serving SJI committee members, one of its most consistent sponsors. Until recently he continued to attend Leinster Region meetings via zoom, and continued to give, his time for the betterment of the sport. He was always there to offer his advice as president of the SJI Leinster Region and be a steady source of guidance.

While his passion is for amateur show jumping, Paddy has served on many SJI committees and the SJI Executive. For many, the business knowledge that he brought to the table was invaluable. Outside of the office, amateur riders have the greatest respect for him and the work that he has done for their category. Due to his many interests in the equestrian world, Paddy Mullen made many friends along the way and had built up a bank of memories. These are memories that he enjoyed sharing given the opportunity
So many people will have fond memories of Paddy and will remember him as another one of lifeโ€™s true gentleman whom they were lucky to meet and enjoy his company. ShowjumpingIreland and the equestrian community have also lost one of their stalwarts. ShowjumpingIreland can reflect that its current status as a successful organisation is in many ways due to the foresight , vision and hard work of Paddy Mullen.

ShowjumpingIreland through its Board, Committees and membership offers its sincere condolences to the Mullen Family on the passing of Paddy.
