Cosy Cats Cattery, Cork

Cosy Cats Cattery, Cork Cosy Cats Cattery is a home away from home, where your cats would choose to go. We are based in West

Opening in June 2021, Cosy Cats Cattery is nestled in the heart of the West Cork Countryside, not far from Bandon. This purpose built cattery exceeds the requirements in the Animal Welfare Regulations (2018) which are the standards set by the International Cat Care (formerly the Feline Advisory Bureau, UK). Each chalet is spacious enough to accommodate two cats from an individual household. Cosy C

ats also has two larger executive chalets catering for families of four with access to their own catio. Our units are made of PVC which offer the highest standard of hygiene, a narrow fixed window between each unit provides an opportunity to see what the neighbour is up to while acting as a sneeze barrier. All Chalets have their own thermostatically controlled heat panels by the sleep areas. Toys, scratching posts and a variety of raised viewing shelves and resting spots. We have 8 cats, all rescued whom are cherished, and we know that cats love their comfort and it is with this in mind the chalets were designed down to the cosy bedding, the choice of food, the fresh filtered water, the type of litter and tray being used. We even have units that are more enclosed at the front to give more privacy to the introverted and a separate unit for those who might like the quieter life. Maintaining the highest standards of care is the norm as is regular interaction with your cat/s and play time, daily grooming (for those who enjoy the process and at the owners request) is offered, and medications can be given if needed, we can also provide a collection and drop off service for an additional fee (limited radius). All cats will need to have their vaccinations up to date (Certification to be shown), to be flea and worm treated before arrival. We are open all year round for bookings but client's must ring before arriving.

So it’s New years eve again! With just under 2 hours before the next 365 days of 2025 begin.
First I would like to thank you all for everything you have done to help us, help as many cats and kittens as possible in this past last year. From liking and sharing our posts and stories, to sheading a tear with us when a loved one passes, and of course the care and attention given to the most precious of all cats (in my opinion) is our free roaming beauties.

This year we have trapped 383 cats.
Rescued 40 cat & kittens, helped to privately rehome 28 beautiful fur babies and 56 cats & kittens were microchipped. As you may well know, we will not under any circumstances rehoming a cat or kitten by private adoption or official CCN adoption without it being neutered first.

We launched a pilot scheme in 2024, where people can avail of discounted neutering & microchipping of their domestic gods and goddess, which got another 26 cats neutered.

When we first came up with the idea of just doing TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) back in 2012 when Community Cats Network was born, our little baby was told that no one in Ireland will help feral cats never mind paying money to get them neutered.
With €28.50 in our newly formed bank account we set off with enthusiasm, passion and of course a whole lotta insanity!

Tonight, with far less enthusiasm but the passion still burns bright and the insanity a whole lot brighter, we can lay claim to 10,680 cats that have been given the gift of kindness and love…sorry I have to put that number in text
β€œTen Thousand Six Hundred & Eighty”

A massive Thank you to our North Cork cat ranchers, fosters, trappers, drivers, cat cuddlers & fundraisers - Jackie & Rob, Amanda McMahon, Geraldine Williams, Elaine Gordon, Kirsty Ni Chonchuir, Breda O’Connor Walsh, Mary Sheehan & Elaine Potter.

Our East Cork Volunteers for never giving up on us! Thank you Jonathan Banks & Susan Kenneally O’Sullivan, You guys rock!!

Our Rosie in the city, Thank you Rosie for going in and out of housing estates all over the city chasing cats.

In West Cork, Katherine Murphy and Lina VenckΕ«naitΔ— PetkevičienΔ— trainee trappers and fosterers. Thank you so much for you help and bear with me for another while if you can

And not forgetting the Feral shed master himself, Jim Dwyer for making sure that every feral cat or kitten that comes into his Feral shed is treated with nothing but kindness and respect, changing cat litters and bedding in the middle of the night so the feral's have a good sleep before neutering and clean safe bedding with good food for when they come back from the vets. Thousands of cats have come through his hands via the feral shed over the years and everyone got the respect they deserve from Jim.

Thank you all, on behalf of all our beloved free roaming and feral felines.

Check out Gavin Russell's write up on keeping your pet safe this Christmas. Featured in a West Cork Christmas.

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. A time for giving and a time for receiving. A time for relaxing with family, friends, and
pets. At Riverview Veterinary Group it can be a busy time
of the year looking after pets. We have vets on call
throughout the festive period looking after pets who have
over indulged or even tried to eat part of the Christmas
tree. This Christmas let us give a little thought to keeping
our pets safe. Let us look at some potential pitfalls and
hazards Christmas brings.
Probably out in front is chocolate a favorite all year round
but especially at Christmas. Chocolate contains
theobromine which causes problems in pets and the
darker the chocolate the deadlier. Chocolate can cause
a rapid heart rate seizures and upset stomachs. White
chocolate can also cause problems. Chocolate is not for
pets. It can cause a real emergency necessitating prompt
veterinary care. Do not leave chocolate near your pets.
In addition to chocolate there are lots of food hazards.
Let us have a quick whistle stop tour over some of the
usual suspects. Food is a big part of Christmas
celebrations. Some pet owners like to give their pets
treats for Christmas including parts of Christmas
Dinners. Lots of foods in Christmas dinners can cause
problems for our pets. Bones both raw and cooked
including turkey bones can cause choking, constipation,
and damage to your pets' stomach. Let us not give Rover
a turkey tummy. Avoid giving your pets any leftovers.
Nuts, raisins, grapes, and onions are all potentially toxic
to our pets. Avoid giving your pet Christmas
pudding ,cake and mince pies. It probably goes without
saying but just in case do not give your pet alcoholβ€”you
would be amazed ! Keep those boozy treats out of reach.
Dairy products contain lactose which causes tummy
upsets and diarrhoea. Sausages may seem like a
harmless treat, but sausages can contain a lot of fat.
This can cause inflammation of the pancreas. Dogs can
become very unwell with vomiting ,diarrhea fever and
abdominal pain. Different dogs have different
sensitivities. Cockers and miniature schnauzers can be
particularly sensitive. But excess fat in any diet can
cause issues for our pets.
It is preferable to use pet approved treats.
Do not forget Christmas decorations. Keep all
decorations out of the reach of curious pets. Tinsel is a
particular problem. It is bright shiny and catches light
arousing pets' interest. It can be a nasty foreign body. It is
not easy to see on an x-ray meaning that it is radio
invisible. Pets can show great interest in decorations
hanging from Christmas trees. Make sure your tree is well
anchored. Brush up pine needles regularly. These can
end up in foot pads and mouths. Do not leave batteries
from toys lying around. Batteries contain heavy metals
and can cause burns and obstructions in our pets'
stomachs.
Watch out for all things plant like. Holly mistletoe
poinsettia and lilies can cause vomiting, drooling
diarrhoea and kidney problems.
Remember to watch open fires and burning candles.
How about a calm quiet area where a pet can retreat to
over Christmas. When there are extra visitors, noise,
music and bright light some pets can feel overwhelmed.
Create a safe space where pets can go. For anxious pets
our clinics can provide calming plug-in diffusers. These
are available for both cats and dogs. They can help pets
feel calmer amidst all the buzz at Christmas. There are
nonprescription anti-anxiety supplements which may
help. For particularly anxious pets we can prescribe
more specialised medication following a consultation
with one of our vets.
Let us make Christmas wonderful and safe for our pets.
Spoil your pets with safe treats, safe toys and lots of
walks. Remember our vets at Riverview Veterinary Group
are available over the Christmas period if your pet is
unwell. Hopefully with the above points in mind it will be
a safe happy time for all. If you have any questions,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Happy Christmas to all our readers.
