It’s that time of year again where we stop taking ourselves too seriously, have a glass of mulled wine (…or three 🍷) and have a good old Christmas Quiz 🎄 We always have a quiz about our Rawpetmedics year, and our esteemed quizmaster Kaz Read is back again this year only this time we’ve persuaded her to join us on screen to host proceedings and keep things in check (good luck Karen is all we can say!). Pour yourself your favourite Christmas tipple and join us on Tuesday at 7pm GMT, live here on Facebook or You Tube if you prefer. See you then 🥂

On Clostridium from raw/dry (from my book!)

"Chaban et al. (2010)47 investigated the shedding of Campylobacter by apparently healthy (n=70) and diarrhoeic (n=65) dogs. The diets of all the healthy dogs were recorded and fifteen of them ate some or all raw meat and bone. They found that 58% (41 of 70) of the healthy dogs were shedding Campylobacter (97% of the diarrheic dogs were shedding the bug, though sadly the authors neglected to record a single piece of information regarding their diet at the time). So, even if all the raw-fed dogs were shedding Campylobacter (unlikely), at least half of the dry-fed dogs were, too.

And, unlike raw dog food, authors have isolated the same species of drug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni from a dog fed a commercial dry diet as detected in a girl infected with the same species.48"

47 Chaban, B., Ngeleka, M. and Hill, J.E. (2010). detection and quantification of 14 Campylobacter species in pet dogs reveals an increase in species richness in f***s of diarrheic animals. BMc Microbiology, 10:73

48 Damborg, P., olsen, K.E.P, Nielsen, E.M. et al. (2004). occurrence of Campylobacter jejuni in pets living with human patients infected with C. jejuni. Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 42(3): 1363–1364
