Barbecue safety tips for pet owners. 🐶🐱

If you’re planning a barbecue this summer, be aware it could present some hazards to your pets. Here are some key things to remember while you're getting your grill on:

🌭 Sharing isn't caring - Don't share your food with your pets. The high fat content in many meats and foods, especially with bones, aren't safe.

🔥 Be fire safe - Keep your pets well away from hot flames, fuel and grills. Remember that smoke can irritate animals' lungs. Keep pets inside if they can't be well supervised.

🍔 Tidy up - Make sure to keep things clean and tidy as tinfoil, clingfilm, skewers and grease-covered stones all pose health risks.

Over the coming spring and summer months, the risk of "flystrike" increases among the rabbit population. Flystrike occurs when flies lay eggs on the rabbit, which hatch into maggots. These maggots then eat the rabbit's flesh, with often fatal results.

Due to rapid development, the best prevention is keeping your rabbit clean and in good health, feeding them an appropriate diet, carefully checking their bottoms at least twice daily and applying preventative treatments during the peak season.
Rabbits are at an increased risk of getting flystrike if they are unable to keep themselves clean due to obesity, arthritis, poor dental health or cramped, dirty living conditions.

Some of the typical signs of flystrike include:
🐰 Digging into a corner of their living area
🐰 A strong smell from their living area
🐰 Open sores or visible maggots on the skin
🐰 Lethargic and very quiet
🐰 Not eating or drinking

Please get in touch with us quickly for further help and advice if you have any suspicions.

🐾 Unkempt nails can cause discomfort and possible injuries to our pets.

While active pets may not require frequent nail clipping, older or less active pets may need more regular trimming. Nail clipping prevents discomfort for your pet whilst they are walking and reduces the risk of more severe foot health issues.

Our Registered Veterinary Nurses offer nail-clipping services to keep your pet's paws comfortable and healthy.

Puppies are adorable, but did you know their first vaccinations are essential for keeping them healthy and safe? 🐾

At six to eight weeks old, it's time to start their vaccine journey, with two injections spaced 2-4 weeks apart. These vaccinations are crucial for protecting them from serious illnesses.

After their second vaccinations, it takes two to four weeks for your puppy to be fully protected, so they'll soon be ready for all the fun - exploring, socialising, and meeting new doggie friends safely! 🐶🌟

Protection lasts for about a year, but annual vaccinations are needed to maintain that immunity and keep your puppy strong and healthy. 🛡️

Regular vaccines are a simple but important way to ensure your puppy stays safe and can enjoy all the tail-wagging adventures without worry! 🐕💖
