This week is World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), a global campaign that is celebrated annually to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance and the dangers it poses to both human and animal health.

It's critical that we preserve the effectiveness of our antibiotics for as long as possible, which can be achieved by only using them when necessary. The battle against antibiotic resistance is a collective effort, and we all have a role to play.

We’re going blue to raise awareness. Are you ready to do your part?

Have you got pet insurance?

There are lots of benefits to having your pet insured, such as:

✔️ Peace of mind

✔️ Prompt treatment

✔️ Claims could be paid directly to your vet

✔️ Other unexpected costs could be covered

✔️ Decisions are not based on finances.

Of course, we hope you'll never need to use it, but it's worth knowing the benefits.

Dear Neighbour,

Just a quick message to let you know that there is a defibrillator now located at Blackrock Veterinary Clinic for public use. The cabinet is attached to the external wall next to the back gate. There is no lock or keypad on the unit so that it is easily accessible in case of an emergency.

Hopefully you will never need to use it, but we feel it is a valuable addition to the community which could save a life.

Today is National Black Cat Day, a day created by Cats Protection to celebrate the virtues of black cats and to encourage people to adopt these lovely felines, as they are often the last to be chosen. 🐕 🐾

To commemorate the day, we have collected a selection of our favourite black cat facts together:
📽️ Black cats are popular in films
🐱 Black cats were gods in ancient Egypt
⚓ Sailors associate black cats with good luck
⚫ There are more black cats than any other colour

KEEP YOUR PET SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN 👻🎃👹

Halloween can be a ‘spooktacular’ time of year for many, but it can be a stressful experience for pets. Here are some helpful tips to keep your pets safe and happy during the Halloween season:

🐶 Spend time reassuring your pets if you plan to dress up for Halloween. Masks and makeup may be enjoyable for you, but your pets may find them scary if they don't recognise you.

🚪 With the constant opening and closing of doors for trick-or-treaters, ensure your pets are kept from potential escape routes. It's also important to have your pets micro-chipped in case the unexpected happens.

🎆 If bright lights or loud noises are anticipated, provide a safe and comfortable space for your pets to retreat to.

🍬 Keep sweet treats out of reach, including chocolate, sweets, and anything containing xylitol.

🎃 Decorations have become a big part of Halloween; however, curious pets can sometimes get into trouble with them. To ensure your pets stay safe, keep open flames, small decorative lights, and decorations out of their reach.

We hope you have a safe and 'fang-tactic' Halloween, but should you need us, we will be here for you and your pet.

GETTING YOUR PET READY FOR DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME CHANGES!

We're all looking forward to that extra hour of sleep when the clocks go back on Saturday 29 October, and lighter morning, but have you considered the impact on your pets? 💤🌞🌔

🕰️When the time changes, it can cause psychological and physiological stress for your pet due to changing their routine.

We suggest gradually changing their schedule in the days leading up to the clock change to make the transition easier.

🦮🦴Start a week before and adjust their feeding, walking, and waking times by ten minutes each day. While changing, it's not uncommon for pets to have accidents indoors, but it's important to remain patient with them as they don't understand the reason for the time change. To ease your pet into the new schedule, delay their routine by an hour over several days.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Today is World Mental Health Day, a day to reflect on the significance of prioritising our mental well-being and supporting those around us to do the same.

One way to achieve this is by showing kindness, and there's nothing quite like the love we receive from our pets that can work wonders for our mental health.

With 1 in 4 people experiencing mental health issues each year, caring for a pet can contribute to positive mental health in many ways, including:

💚 Providing companionship, security, and someone to spend time with

💚 Reducing anxiety and increasing self-confidence

💚 Offering unconditional love and being great listeners

💚 Encouraging physical activity through daily walks or runs

💚 Facilitating social interaction with other pet owners

💚 Providing structure to the day with feeding, exercising, and caring for a pet

💚 Elevating serotonin and dopamine levels through play leads to a calming and relaxing effect.

Take some time today to prioritise your mental health by spending time with your pet. Enjoy the time you spend with them, taking your dog for a walk, cuddling with your cat, or giving your pet a stroke.

🍂 🐱 As autumn sets in and the nights grow longer, it's time to prepare for firework season. However, while fireworks bring us joy, they can be distressing for our feline friends.

As clever creatures, cats require extra care during this time. Here are some tips to help keep your cat safe and comfortable:

🏠 Keep your cat indoors where possible and make sure they are microchipped.
🤫Create a cosy and quiet space inside where they can relax and avoid the noise.
🐱Consider giving them calming treats or supplements to help them stay calm. A pheromone diffuser may also be beneficial, particularly to start using ahead of the celebration season.

Have you heard of Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI)? 🐶🌳🍂

This condition is most commonly observed in dogs between August and November after walking in wooded areas.

Although SCI is rare, it's critical to be able to recognise the symptoms, including:

⚠️Vomiting
⚠️Lethargy
⚠️Diarrhea
⚠️Lack of appetite
⚠️Muscle tremors

While there are many other common reasons why these symptoms may occur, we advise contacting us immediately if you suspect your dog is exhibiting signs of SCI, particularly within 72 hours of visiting a wooded area.

If left untreated, seasonal canine illness can be fatal.

The fireworks season is just around the corner, but for many dogs, this time of year can be quite distressing. To ensure that your canine companion feels safe and secure during this period, it's essential to prepare them ahead of time.

Here are our top three tips for keeping your pet as comfortable as possible:

🚪Keep your dog from escaping the house by securely closing all doors and windows.

🎆Close curtains and blinds to help muffle the sounds and flashing lights of fireworks.

🦮Walk your dog before it gets dark.

🔒 In case of an unexpected event, ensure your pet has an up-to-date microchip with current information.

❤️Give your dog plenty of love, attention, and fun activities to distract them.

🐶 Avoid leaving your dog alone during this time.

🎶 Have some calming music playing in the background to mask out the loud bangs of fireworks.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

🌱🌾🌿 As we enter the season of frequent lawn mowing, it's important to remember to keep your pets safe.

Injuries caused by incidents with lawnmowers can be severe. Sometimes pets react to the noise and movement as they do with vacuum cleaners, but the consequences are much worse. When possible, it's best to keep your pets indoors until the job is complete and the lawnmower is safely stored away.

Here are some additional tips to help keep your pets safe during lawn mowing season:

⚠️ If you have an outdoor cat, consider keeping them indoors during lawn mowing with doors and windows closed to prevent them from escaping.

⚠️ Check areas of long grass for wildlife and any pets resting.

⚠️ Teach your pet to associate the sound of the lawnmower with positive things like treats or playtime. This will help them feel less anxious when the lawnmower is near them.

⚠️ Always check the area for any hidden objects or debris before mowing. This will prevent objects from being thrown out and potentially injuring your pet.

⚠️ Lastly, always supervise your pet if they are outside during lawn mowing. This will allow you to react quickly if they show any signs of distress or attempt to approach the lawnmower.

Understanding the science behind why our pets get poorly is vital to promoting well-being and recovery. 🧪🧬

Our veterinary nurses 👩‍🔬 can be responsible for in-house processing of samples, whether that is running a blood test or analysing a sample under the microscope. Some samples may be sent to an external laboratory, and the Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) may be responsible for ensuring this is done safely and accurately.

RVNs may also be responsible for keeping the laboratory equipment in working order to provide our diagnostic services without any interruption.

👩‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️ 😀 SMILE!

We all appreciate the importance of maintaining our pearly whites and our pets need us to support them with this too!

Like human dentistry, pet dental examinations and treatment are about prevention and education, so you’ll be pleased to know that our empowered veterinary Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) are on hand to support you!

🦷 Our RVNs play a vital role in educating, advising and recommending preventative dental care, from how best to brush your pet’s teeth thoroughly, all the way through to advising on a referral with one of our veterinary surgeons if required.

Behind the scenes, RVNs can also carry out dental scale and polishes while patients are under general anaesthesia.

👩‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️ Our veterinary nurses provide expert nursing care for all animals they look after. 🐩🐈🐇🐹🐍

Veterinary surgeons and Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) empower each other to work together to provide holistic care for their patients – your pets.

This can include undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, administering treatments, caring for hospitalised patients and carrying out minor surgical procedures.

RVNs are also required to complete continuing professional development to maintain their knowledge and skills... they play a very significant role in our practice.

📆 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ Throughout May, to celebrate Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, we will recognise and appreciate the vital role of our empowered veterinary nurses.

🍫 As much as we all love to indulge in some chocolate over Easter, it is important to remember that chocolate can be dangerous for our pets.

Chocolate poisoning is particularly common at this time of year, especially with the large amounts of Easter eggs that are readily available, and sometimes hidden too.
Chocolate contains theobromine, which can be toxic to dogs and cats.

To keep your pet safe, keep all chocolate away from them and opt for pet-safe treats instead.

Today is ‘identiday’

Our pets can’t tell us when they’re lost – but, by microchipping them and keeping their details up to date can help us be reunited if they are.

Microchipping is a quick and easy procedure that can be performed at our practice. The microchip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, is inserted under the pet's skin and contains a unique identification number. This number is linked to your contact information so that if your pet is found, you can be contacted quickly and easily.

Today, why not take five minutes to ensure your contact details are up-to-date on the database, so should your pet go missing, they can be re-united with you as quickly as possible.

14/03/2023

As humans, we fret around the buzzing noise when a bee comes close, however, an inquisitive pet may seek to investigate, and as a result, could get stung. Pets seem to be fascinated by bees and wasps and can be stung when trying to play with them, after rolling in the grass, rummaging in the garden or disturbing a nest.

Commonly, most stings will cause your pet some irritation and some pain. Dependent on where your pet has been stung and if they have been stung before. In some instances, there can be a lot of swelling and they may continually scratch the stung area, which can result in fur loss. If your pet shows any of the following symptoms, they could have been stung:

🐝 Drooling

🐝 Whining

🐝 Swelling

🐝 Pawing at the face, or mouth

🐝Biting at the site of the sting

🐝Holding up their paw (if that is where they have been stung)

If your pet has been stung near their mouth or nose, you should contact us immediately.
