We’re excited to introduce Michael McGinley, one of our incredible Veterinary Surgeons working between Lucan and our brand-new practice in Celbridge!

Michael graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2022 and began his career in general practice before returning to UCD to complete a small animal rotating internship. In 2024, we were thrilled to welcome him to the MyVet team!

With a strong passion for Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care, as well as Internal Medicine, Michael is dedicated to delivering exceptional care to every pet he meets.

When he’s not at work, you’ll find Michael out and about with his two poodles, Donnacha and Tadhg, or treating them to a well-deserved pup cup! 🐾☕

November is Pet Diabetes Month, and today is World Diabetes Day! 🐾💙

Did you know there are several signs of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats? Look out for these symptoms:

🐶 Excessive thirst
🐱 Increased urination
🐶 Inappropriate urination

🐶 Increased appetite
🐱 Cataracts
🐶 Weakness
🐱 Lethargy
🐶 Poor skin condition

Pet obesity is a rising concern in the UK, and it often goes hand-in-hand with diabetes. Our team offers glucose testing through blood or urine samples to detect diabetes early. 🌟 Meet Louise, our dedicated Animal Care Assistant since 2019! 🐾 With a background in photography and videography, she made the leap to working with animals while living abroad in Hong Kong—fulfilling her childhood dream! ✨

Louise got her first dog, Nick, in Hong Kong and brought him home with her in 2020. In 2022, they moved to the UK and welcomed his sister, Mable, into the family! 🐶❤️

When they’re not road-tripping around Ireland and the UK, Louise enjoys crocheting stylish outfits for both humans and pets. And on weekends, you can find her riding her motorbike through the stunning Wicklow mountains! 🏍️🌄

While pumpkins are a popular seasonal treat and look fantastic when they have been carved and lit up, there are a few hidden risks for pets that every owner should be aware of.

Here's what to watch out for...

🎃 Raw pumpkin: It can upset your pet's stomach. Stick to plain, cooked pumpkins if you want to give them a treat.

🎃 Pumpkin seeds: Raw seeds are hard to digest and may cause blockages.

🎃 Spiced pumpkin foods: Pumpkin pies and treats often contain harmful ingredients like sugar, nutmeg, or cinnamon, which are dangerous for pets.

🎃 Pumpkin decorations: Be careful with lit jack-o'-lanterns - they can be a fire hazard if pets knock them over.

🎃 Candles: Jack-o'-lanterns with real candles pose a fire risk if your pet knocks them over. Opt for LED candles and keep them out of reach of curious pets.

KEEP YOUR PET SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN 👻🎃👹

Halloween can be a ‘spooktacular’ time of year for many, but it can be a stressful experience for pets. Here are some helpful tips to keep your pets safe and happy during the Halloween season:

🐶 Spend time reassuring your pets if you plan to dress up for Halloween. Masks and makeup may be enjoyable for you, but your pets may find them scary if they don't recognise you.

🚪 With the constant opening and closing of doors for trick-or-treaters, ensure your pets are kept from potential escape routes. It's also important to have your pets micro-chipped in case the unexpected happens.

🎆 If bright lights or loud noises are anticipated, provide a safe and comfortable space for your pets to retreat to.

🍬 Keep sweet treats out of reach, including chocolate, sweets, and anything containing xylitol.

🎃 Decorations have become a big part of Halloween; however, curious pets can sometimes get into trouble with them. To ensure your pets stay safe, keep open flames, small decorative lights, and decorations out of their reach.

🌙🛏️ Who else is looking forward to an extra hour of sleep this weekend?

As we get ready for the clock change, it’s important to remember that our pets may need a little help adjusting, too! 🐶🐱

Dogs and cats thrive on routine, and while they don’t understand the time change, they can definitely feel its effects. Here are a few simple tips to ease them through the transition:

🐾 Shift bedtime gradually: Bring their bedtime forward a little each evening to prepare for the new schedule.

🌙 Walk your dog earlier: With darker evenings, an earlier walk can help them stay safe and adjust to the changing light.

🍽️ Adjust meal times: Gradually shift feeding times over the next few days so the change doesn’t feel too sudden.

🚗 Keep cats safe: With darker evenings, cats are more at risk on busy roads. Bring them indoors earlier to keep them safe.

Happy World Chocolate Day! 🍫 Although World Chocolate Day is a joyous occasion for chocolate enthusiasts, it's essential to be mindful that chocolate can be highly dangerous to pets, especially dogs and cats. 🐶😺 Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are harmful to animals. The darker the chocolate, the more harmful it can be. Even small quantities can lead to serious health problems such as vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, elevated heart rate, and, in severe instances, seizures or, worse, death. By taking a few simple precautions, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable World Chocolate Day for all, including our pets. Here are some pet-friendly tips to consider: 🍫Keep chocolate out of reach: Store your tempting chocolates in secure containers or cabinets to prevent dogs from reaching them. 🍫 Educate friends and family: Inform your loved ones about the dangers of chocolate for dogs and ask them to keep chocolate products away from your dog. 🍫 Avoid sharing: Refrain from sharing chocolate with your pet, as even a small amount can be detrimental. 🍫 Stay alert: Be observant of signs of chocolate ingestion in your dog, such as restlessness, increased heart rate, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
