Nicola has two rescue bunnies Shadow and Luna, who had fought in the past, so she was a little nervous to try bonding again, naturally! She joined my 8 WEEKS OR LESS TO GET YOUR RABBITS BONDED Challenge in Mid May last year and by Mid July, they were happily bonded and living their best life!

Later on Day one of Bonding Mixie and Maisy here at The Rabbit Rooms Small Animal Boarding and Bonding in Dublin, Ireland - I am sure they have some working out to do yet but this is very positive - both relaxed and Mixie has her back to Maisy which indicates she is not seeing her as a threat! 👏

**My name is Candice. I am a final-year Veterinary Nursing and Companion Animal Behaviour student at the University of Bristol. For my dissertation, I am conducting a questionnaire-based study on rabbit behaviour, titled:

“Owners’ experiences and barriers with seeking veterinary support for the management of problem behaviours in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)”

Anyone aged 18+, living in the UK, and owning at least one pet rabbit is eligible to participate.

It is open to participants with any level of rabbit-related knowledge and experience, and you do not need to have sought veterinary or behaviourist advice before, to participate. All responses will remain completely anonymous. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

REQUIREMENTS -

1. ANY BUNNIES TO BE BONDED NEED TO BE AT LEAST 8 WEEKS POST NEUTER - this improves your chance of success, and reduces the chances of them falling out later due to hormone surges - you are then only dealing with their personalities during bonding, not the hormones as well - which can be hard enough!

2, A COMMITMENT TO GET THIS DONE - It is perfectly possible to fit bonding around a busy lifestyle, but you need to commit to making time for it whenever possible - for example if you work Monday to Friday 9-5, you could do a couple of hours in the evenings and then longer days at the weekend, and change it up as you need to. You do need to be consistent but it doesn't need to take over your life! Obviously the more hours you put into it, especially at the beginning, the quicker they will bond, but they will still get there with shorter stints, it will just take longer.

3, A NEUTRAL SPACE - it's possible to make any space neutral EVEN IF ONE OR BOTH OF YOUR BUNNIES FREE ROAM AND EVEN IF YOU LIVE IN A SMALL SPACE - set yourself up somewhere comfortable as the more comfortable you are , the longer bonding periods you will manage Neutralise the space with a solution of 50/50 vinegar and water (yes it stinks, open the windows! It will pass and keep the bunnies out., Ideally for a few days before you begin and then throughout the process until they are bonded so that you keep it neutral and don't have to keep neutralising it)

4, SOME EQUIPMENT - an expandable pen, gloves, etc - I will give you a full list with links to easily purchase when you enroll

You could be unknowingly be stopping them bonding if one of your essential elements isn't right - for example - you need to know how to correctly identify and deal with bonding behaviours because if you step in too early you can stop them figuring out a hierarchy and so they won’t have a strong bond, and even may be stopping them progressing but if you step in too late you risk an injury

HOW DO I SET UP MY BONDING PEN?!

This is a question I am asked ALL THE TIME - and can be a real key componet in how successful your bond is! If you don't put enough in your pen your bunnies will be bored and more likely to be 'at each other' but you don'[t want to give them things to fight over in the early days.

A TIP FOR THOSE OF YOU THINKING OF STARTING YOUR BONDING JOURNEY WITH YOUR RABBITS OR STRUGGLING

I was chatting today to one of my lovely bonding customers today as she was worried about one of her bunnies who is a bit subdued whenever the dominant one shows 'bossy' behaviours - she is fine, eating well, and just observing, but it can be nerve wracking and we can want to swoop in and 'save' them when really the best thing is to wait it out, be patient and look at it as a temporary situation for the lovely end result we want and that will bring our bunnies enormous happiness - always keeping an eye on our bigger picture, visualising them grooming and snuggling.

It made me think of the 'Hot Fuzz' movie with Simon Pegg in it (the guy in 'Sean of the Dead') - he's a cop in a tiny country town in the UK and the townspeople are all about community in a cult like way almost and are going around murdering people they don't think fit their ideals. (It's a comedy by the way!)

They keep insisting it's for the 'GREATER GOOD' - when you're anxious to start or having a tough day with the bonding, think about your 'greater good' of peace in your house, no more bunnies living separate lives, and a better life for everyone in your house - and hang in there!!!

One year old neutered/vaccinated Bali is in need of new indoor home, due to their owners moving abroad.

He has a great character.
He has a lot of energy, and he enjoys to eat his favourite pellets.
