Meet Kris 😍 a beautiful jrt x who had a hard start to life as a puppy. Kris likes to shout when she sees dogs in the distance and is not too confident on walks. In order to change this we talked about control and management and expectations. We worked on eye contact 👀 target training 🎯 and some basic training 😊 we also worked on loose lead. Kris and her human is doing amazing! Swipe to see the progress so far! 🥰

How cute is Harvey. Bit late posting but Harvey had a park session where we worked on understanding body language, recall with distraction and how to approach other dogs while keeping your dog safe. Its so important to understand dogs body language as well as your own so you know when to take your dog away from a situation 💕

AN EASY FOOD TO SHARE FROM THE FRIDGE: A SUPERFOOD FOR DOGS🐶, THE ALMIGHTY EGG🥚 AKA NATURE’S MULTIVITAMIN!

When sourcing the perfect longevity snack for your dog, the humble egg🥚 should be at the top of your list! If there was such a thing as a perfect food for pets, it would be eggs. They are rich in bioavailable amino acids, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals while being relatively low in calories and carbs. Whether from chicken🐔, quail, or ducks🦆, eggs are nature’s nutrition bombs!

Eggs🥚 contain all ten essential amino acids needed to support effective muscle growth, recovery and maintenance. Eggs are also rich in choline, which is excellent for brain and skin health.🧠

The fastest method is to offer them raw but you can also scramble, poach, soft-boil...however you want to cook your eggs, leave the butter, salt, pepper off and share a bite of your eggs with your dog! You can also boil them, peel, slice and dehydrate for a healthy "choline crisp" dog treat! 🙌

When choosing eggs, try and go for pastured, free-range eggs to get the most nutrients. One egg is about seventy calories.

Day out with Daisy 🐕‍🦺 Daisy's owners were having a small party and the people may overwhelm daisy so being the responsible puppy owners, I took her for a big adventure up the hills to get her out of the crowd 😊 She had such a blast, we got to practice our recall, eye contact and even a stay (for the pics obviously 🤣)

I always recommend investigating the ‘root cause’ of any behaviours you don’t want.

Here’s some examples:

Is your puppy biting the children because he’s teething and overwhelmed and needs more calm time with lovely cool chews in a quiet area?

Is your dog jumping up on people because they are a little bit anxious and it’s something to do with those nerves?

Or digging holes in the garden because they are bored silly and gives them something to do if their walks and mental enrichment isn’t quite right?

Or barking at people coming into the house because she’s super scared and is communicating her need for space?

You have three choices

1. Tolerate the behaviour, yes you can choose to live with it. But remember it’s a choice you’ve made directly or indirectly and don’t get mad when the dog does the thing you’ve decided to tolerate. If you think the root cause may be fear or anxiety speak with a Clinical Behaviourist. And otherwise make sure it’s not something that’s impacting neighbours or other people and dogs.

2. Manage the behaviour - you can manage most problem behaviours to stop them happening. Dog jumps on guests - put them in another room on arrival. Dog doesn’t come when called - keep them on a long line so they can’t run away. Dog steals food from dinner table - put them in their crate with a lickimat or kong with their meal and so on…

3. Train - you can train your dog to alternative behaviours. Teach them, engage their brains and help them figure out what you do want. Yelling, shouting, screaming isn’t dog training you might suppress a behaviour in the instance but only through fear and it probably won’t generalise. People often ask me what way should they say the cue words we train and I always tell them it doesn’t matter. The word or sound will be trained and generalised and understood.

Whatever option you go with, ensure your dog or puppy is getting enough mental enrichment, lovely long calm sniffy walks and plenty of time and attention.

Double trouble 😍 meet the handsome duo! I'm so grateful that I got to help these two boys today. Phil is 2 year old who likes to protect his belongings so today we went through a bit of management and showing Phil that he can be approached safely and nothing will be taken from him while also listening to his body language 😊

Dougal is a bit vocal on walks and likes people to hear him so we went through some clicker training as well as some target training for some fun on walks 🥰

The boys and pawrents aced their training. Interested in our training sessions or our new training packages? Get in touch now😍

We help with all kind of behaviors 🐶

Whaaaaaa, I hear you shout at me wondering if I’ve gone mad….but let me explain…..

What do we want from our dogs and puppies?

We often don’t want them doing natural doggie things, things that are self motivating and give them natural reinforcement.

We don’t want them barking

We don’t want them digging

We don’t want them running around the house

We don’t want them chewing

We don’t want them biting

We don’t want them scavenging for our food

We don’t want them jumping up even when playing

So really what do we want them doing?

Nothing 😂

If you reinforce or reward your puppy or dog for laying in their bed doing nothing. They will offer this behaviour more.

If you reward when your puppy or dog is quiet they’ll try to offer more quietness.

If you reinforce or reward your puppy for sitting doing nothing while you prepare dinner they will offer this behaviour more

If you reward them for watching you walk passed and not latch on to your trousers as you walk past, they will offer this more

Today…right now….weigh your dogs dinner out and put it into an old hoody pocket or bun bag. As you go about your day - reward anything your dog does that you like….and you’ll see it’s often usually doing nothing 😂

Be proactive not reactive when it comes to teaching our dogs how to live in our world.

Whatever is left over at the end of the day you can put into their dish or even better, a food enrichment toy.

Have fun and report back!

Everyone meet Daisy 😍 Daisy is a 5month old giddy puppy 💞 it's so important that we lay some strong foundations to set daisy up for adolescents. We helped Daisy today with some focus work, impulse control, off lead and on lead as well as introducing her to some enrichment. Because daisy is a working breed she needs lots of stimulation for her brain as well as physical exercise 🐶

If you're interested in our training sessions do get in touch 🐶💞

Do you know what trigger stacking is? Read below!

Do you know what trigger stacking is? Read below!

Dogs rarely bite "out of the blue". When multiple triggers occur close together, or at the same time, they can have a cumulative effect (trigger stacking).

A dog with a fear of skateboards, who is uncomfortable around large dogs and really dislikes being patted on the head, may hold it together when presented with only one of his triggers. However, being patted on his head with a large dog close to him at the moment that a skateboarder goes by, may cause him to bite. Three triggers at once would put him over his bite threshold.

Know your dog's triggers and do your best to avoid putting him in a situation that might push him too far.

Great post by Orlagh! If your trainer needs "tools" to "help" your dog then they are not trainers! Why train a dog out of fear?

Does your dog have a choice box?

Always look into what breed of dog you want, weather you have time for their traits etc 😊

Always look into what breed of dog you want, weather you have time for their traits etc 😊

You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari and be surprised that it’s really fast!!

So when your dog starts showing the breed traits that they have has been selectively bred for over hundreds and hundreds of years, don’t be surprised and don’t call them naughty, call them normal!

You gota research your breed and then work with what kind of performance was given to them🚗 🐶

We do love a good cockapoo 🥰 meet Archie. Archie is a 5 month old puppy who is very nervous of the world and has in turn become quite reactive to sound and noise 🐕‍🦺 we worked on some confidence building work, esp on works, some noise desensitization as well as a "go to bed and stay" for new visitors 🥰

Who is the person behind mannerly mutts?

Thought I'd do a post about the girl behind the business?

Hello my name is Leanne, Dublin born and bred 😊 I've had dogs all my life, all different breeds from doberman, beagles, pointers, Stafford bull terrier and collies 🥰 My interest in dogs and behavior has always been there, from the age of 3 I had my whole life planned, I wanted to have a vets called 'vets n pets', has colours picked and everything 🙈🤣

My interest in behavior came about when I got a harrier hound called Benson who had a fear of groups of men particularly so I started looking into reasons and how to help and came by positive reinforcement, desensitization etc. When I started seeing changes I knew I loved what I was doing and I had to learn more and help more dogs.

Fast forward a few years, diploma in behavior and training, accreditation with IMDT, many courses as well as seminars and I've got my business up and running!

I have my own collie who loves to herd and be reactive and she has thought me more in the last 2 years about training and behavior then any other. I wouldn't change anything I've done in the last few years.

If you would like to know more about me, ask away😊

*Note below is not my collie🤣 belongs to the lovely WaggyMamas Agility ❤️

What's better than one collie you ask? Well 3 of course!! Say hello to the beautiful trio 😍😍 how much I love my job!! The 3 boys are all brothers, they're 14months old and are just 3 of 5! They get on like a house on fire but their wonderful owners reached out for our help when they became overwhelming on walks 🐕‍🦺❤️

Today we got to train the beautiful trio out in the park! We worked on leash frustration, Working seperately as individuals, some basic training and some well deserved down time, recall and of course our emergency 'middle'. The pawrents aced their training this morning as well as the dogs. Just look at that focus of beautiful angel acing middle. Its important for the dogs to be able to focus together as well as individuals 🥰

Are you looking for some dog training? Feel like you need some help or advice? Get in touch today and we'd be happy to help 🐕‍🦺

You've heard about Lotus biscuits but now meet Lotus the puppy 😍 just how adorable is he 🥰 Lotus mammy was found and brought to the pound where she gave birth to a litter of puppies including this lil one. Such a sad situation but a happy out come for him. Today Lotus pawrents took advantage of our puppy 3 week training package, at just 3 months old he's already a flyer 🥰 we taught Lotus his name, eye contact 👀 how to sit 🐕 and lie down. We also taught Lotus an emergency 'middle' for use when he's out and about and it will help with his recall when he's going on walks. We also showed Lotus pawrents all about enrichment and how important it is esp for puppies.
We definitely can't wait to see Lotus again!
