So new year new start to all this πŸ™„, keep your pets safe out walking do not allow them smell deceased birds, vermin or other dogs faeces which is a huge cause of passing illness to other dogs, you don't know what the other animal or doggie has or hasn't and to avoid a visit to the vet just walk on past, focus their attention on you with treats or voice, don't allow them to touch or smell 🐢🐢🐢🐢

Stay safe & keep your pets indoors in this freezing spell folks!

How cold is too cold for your pets?

As the temperatures are starting to drop and frost and ice set it. It’s essential to ensure the health and safety of our furry friends.

Here are some tips to keep your pets safe and warm:

Don't leave them outside. To keep them warm, make sure they have access to a warm and comfortable place to sleep Unless your pet has a thick fur coat and is acclimated to cold weather, they should not be left outside for extended periods of time 🏑

Salt and other ice-melting chemicals can irritate your pet's paws To prevent this, wipe your pet's paws with a damp cloth after each walk. Even though it's cold outside, your pet still needs access to fresh water. Make sure their water bowl is always full and not frozen ❄️

Antifreeze is very dangerous for your pets too, they can easily get into antifreeze when it leaks from cars. They can drink from puddles of antifreeze or just step in them and lick the antifreeze off their paws.

Don't shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting him a coat or sweater.

Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet πŸ₯Ά

πŸ›‘ Stay safe and keep your fur babies safe and warm πŸ›‘
With the snow and ice expected, the roads may well be gritted. If you walk your Dog on gritted roads/paths please make sure that their paws are washed either by walking them through a few puddles away from the gritted surfaces or by dipping their feet in fresh water once at home.
‼️ Every year hundreds of pets throughout the country become seriously ill and in some cases die because of the rock salt and antifreeze being used during the cold snap. Dogs and Cats walk through the substances left by gritters trying to clear roads and car drivers defrosting their windscreens and then licking them off their paws.
‼️ Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.

Looking at it from a doggie point of view makes sense really

Looking at it from a doggie point of view makes sense really

Perspective is EVERYTHING.

When it comes to the grooming environment practically everything is an environmental stressor and could quite possibly add to the stress a dog experiences.

From very first impressions to the actual grooming process, everything in the environment that a dog's senses can pick up on will have some form of consequence to their overall emotional state.

Stressors, and how they are received are very much relative to each individual therefore it's never wise to assume that what is a positively associated stimulus to one dog is the same to another.

The fact remains, that when a dog is exposed to various triggering stimuli we can expect to see some significant emotional, behavioural, physiological and physical responses.

Without careful introductions and a mindful approach to our logistics, we cannot expect a dog to cooperate for grooming tasks.

We often encourage our students to physically get down to a dog's level when risk-assessing and designing their salon environment layout.

For example, a standing dryer might look non-threatening and insignificant to a person who stands 5ft 6, but to a dog it can look incredibly threatening and overpowering.

Everything from what can be seen to what can be felt or heard, smelled or even sensed can ALL contribute to a dog's overwhelm leading to sensory overload.

Being able to objectively see your environment, and process from the dog's perspective not only helps to ignite our compassion but also provides us with an opportunity to develop our ability to problem-solve and adapt our space and creatively devise an approach that considers each dog's needs.

As you can see from the image below, there are many potential triggers that may ignite feelings of fear, discomfort, anxiety and/or stress in a dog, perhaps you can identify more?

It can be a fun exercise to take part in, and we invite you all to take a photo of your own environments (whether at home or within a professional setting) and carry out the same task!

Feel free to share with us your findings in the comment below as we would love to see them!

Note: this concept applies to not just dogs, but all animals - our environment triggers feelings and emotions in all sentient beings, we focus on dogs only because this is the area we specifically educate our students on.
